Wish this interview would have been longer. He was an interesting man, whose upbringing was quite similar to my own, except I grew up black in a nearly all-white new england town in the 60s. I too was an odd ball when I went to college and started meeting and hanging out with other blacks from the south and inner cities. Before then I never really thought of myself, or anyone else, in terms of "race." Didn't really start to develop "race consciousness" until well into my college days. Nonetheless, I always cherished both experiences (growing up in an all-white environment and later developing a "race consciousness", as both were formative experiences that gave me a depth and breadth of understanding that a more closed and restrictive life experience would have denied me, as it has denied others whose formative years were indeed lived within tight constraints. Wonderful posting!
What an amazingly brave man.
