Nel Noddings on Education for Caring

What if education, instead of its current, narrow focus on simply “training people for the global economy” were about a deeper vision of nurturing caring human beings? Nel Noddings is the internationally-acclaimed pioneer of the effort to make caring a fundamental aim in education. Caring in all its myriad forms. Caring about ourselves, other human beings, our natural and man-made world, our communities, the world of ideas and culture, and even the survival of our democracy. A former math teacher and education professor at Stanford and Columbia, Nel is a noted philosopher who lectures widely on her unique “theory of care.” Claudia and I caught up with Nel in her lovely seaside home in charming Ocean Grove, NJ. Nel offers “advice from the porch” to our new Secretary of Education, and a peek at her beautiful garden: evidence that her ideas about caring really do work!

The interview is amazing but after Nel sentences, the annoying noise "hımmm" :) is unnecessary I guess.

hey great video but could you not make noises after every sentence? once in a while but not every 5 seconds it gets annoying. I get you are agreeing but it's hard to listen and watch the entirely of the hour hearing that. Just a suggestion, great video tho will be following more n more

Hey, I love this video. Nel is extraordinary. I'd like to give you some advice whether you take it or not it's up to you. First let me say I do think John is very charming but,of course there a but, I'm going to put two interveiws links both fantastic but notice the mediators kzread.info/dash/bejne/pqKGzquij5TeqsY.html then look at this mediator kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4mZs7qmibnHnaQ.html . Well you're leaning more toward the former, though no where near as bad. Clearly Bill does not really like what Dan is saying and even rebutes yet always let the thoughts finish. I always like hearing what Nel has to say. I would really like to get some deeper thought but she's always just touching on her thoughts, a quick overveiw, just the tip of a huge iceburg of thought. I did subscribe. This was very good, looking forward to greatness in the future.

Has the interviewer considered the sense of entitlement inherent in the fact that his parents live around the corner form Nel noddings in that lovely neighbourhood?

Thank you for interviewing someone I consider a national, indeed international treasure. Now, having said that, I must address some issues that stand out to me, as a former lecturer and instructor of video production and video directing. Your intro is far, far too long, and would be better as a "prologue" done without Dr. Noddings on screen. When interviewing anyone, utilize all of your time with them to actually ask the questions and hear the answers. Record your intros, and post interview synopsis, at another time, unless they are very, very short (under 30 seconds). So far I am 4:00 minutes into your video and you have not addressed Dr. Noddings at all. Her information is important, as she is. Please, talk less. Listen more. I suspect, after I have watched the entire interview, I will have more comments. Hopefully they will be helpful.

The interviewer comes off as juvenile and unprofessional. If you can get past that, Nel does provide some much needed insight about how we need to be more flexible and engaging with students.

Comes from a person that despises God. A reprobate mind that despises authority, she will have trouble on the day of judgment. For all the corrupt teachings she has been spreading. This is just witchcraft. Repent! "Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!" - Matthew 18:7
