Neil Young | Broken Record (Hosted by Rick Rubin)

Ойын-сауық

If Broken Record had an all-star list, Neil Young would be at the top. He’s been on the show three times now, and his legendary body of work has been brought up by more musicians interviewed on our show than any other artist-except maybe Joni Mitchell. That’s because Neil is a true artist’s artist. His dedication to his craft is resolute. He’s been writing and singing songs since the early ’60s and his creative output has been near constant for the last six decades.
Neil stopped by Shangri-La following the release of Crazy Horse’s latest album, World Record. The album was produced by Rick Rubin, and on today’s episode, Neil talks to Rick about the remarkable way the new songs were conceived. Neil also reminisces about recording After The Gold Rush and Harvest. And he explains how THC changes his relationship to music.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

That is so interesting, to multi track with a phone and computer, by making lo fi recordings, then stacking them one at a time. I met my bass player/vocalist, when I heard him doing this. He lived catty corner behind me, and he would jump the fence with his bass and 15 watt amp when we first started writing songs. He used a tape player, and would record the initial idea, then stick his human head in the dryer, at his garage, and bang out the next track of drums on a second cassette recorder. After the drums and bass were done, he would then sing to it back on to the other tape recorder. I honestly thought he had a whole band, while I eves dropped on him, before I met him. He was the most brilliant musician I ever played with, and the three of us wrote amazing songs, though none of us were actually good musicians. Those were amazing times, because none of us were in a position to say something was not good enough. We either enjoyed it and made a song out of it because we liked it, or just let it fade back into the unknown, from where it began.

I love Neil. I disagree with his diatribes on analog vs digital. Digital as a recording and distribution method was not the problem. It was different and you do get different results. But you could get great recording done in digital or analog. The problems came in when the loudness wars started and every CD was compressed to the point of major distortion. That isn't digitals fault, that is fault of humans in production after the music was recorded. But, digital enabled it to happen. Now digital allows musicians to create art that doesn't involve as much skill. Just fix it on the computer, put it in time and on pitch. Again, that isn't digitals fault. Humans are making the mistake, digital just made it easy. Put back talent back in and stop the brick wall compression and digital sounds just fine.
