Have loved this song since I was 12 years old back in 1968. A dear friend and I would play it over & over on the stereo in her room and sing our hearts out. I didn't think anyone remembered this song but me! When I mention it people think I'm nuts. Now I can show them I'm not.

Took me ages to identify this song off the radio and to my joy I finally found it after about 2 hours on lyrics search with just the words "Neil Sedaka" and "love" (It's all I had, & he's written/sang bucketloads of "love" type songs)... the great singer Neil just NAILS this one; it is so haunting and sends me chills every time I hear it. Very meaningful lyrics, a rare gem!

This is Neil's most emotional song that I have have truly loved since I first heard it in the early 1970s. When I interviewed Neil in his mother-in-law's flat in NYC in August 1993, he said he would not re-record it for stereo because the lyrics are outdated. The song was of a demo version recording that occurred in a small studio with Neil and Howie at the dials. For further details, listen to my KZread interview.

Michael Turner hello Michael, I’ve really enjoyed listening to your interview with Neil. Star Crossed Lovers is an incredible song. It meant a great deal to me back in the early nineties when as a CofE Christian I fell for a girl Whos faith forbid us from being together. It’s interesting for Neil to say he was thinking more of skin colour than faith.

I’ve always believed that this song was about a Catholic young man wanting to marry a non-Catholic young woman. After all, “Father dear father” is said several times, as if he is asking a priest for permission to marry his fiancée; he says that they “believe in the same God, but see Him through different eyes,” & in the real world at the time, the news frequently reported on the strife between Catholics & Protestants in Northern Ireland.
