I haven't listened to any of Neil's mashups, but I do love analyzing his original songs. The man is secretly a genius pretending to be 'haha funny internet guy', and then on the Spirit Phone commentary track says that he wishes he could just sing about bugs that don't matter... during the song about how conformity can cause a society to collapse.

I agree! He is original stuff is awesome. That said, I strongly recommend Mouth Dreams, since it;s my definite fav. I recommend grabbing a nice cup of hot chocolate and finding a nice cozy place to sit, before getting those headphones on and treating yourself. It's a weird, yet oddly sentimental ride. It's not available on most streaming services, but it's up on KZread for free.

Like I didn't personally think mouth dreams was the best album he done either, but a four out of 10 is kind of cruel, especially for how funny this album is.

Holy shit. I didn't know anything about Johnny Cash's personal history, but now, hearing your summary, I realised how powerful splicing in that last "hurt" is. Totally reframes Rick Astley's words to be this depressingly ironic ballad of flowery promises that, with hindsight, we know will end up broken... There's even another parallel between between the line "never gonna let you down" and "I will let you down". I'm legit getting teary eyed, fuck.

To add onto the transition of having Closerflies come right after Johnny on the album, Neil loves to do this in the Mouth albums. The track right before Johnny is a skit track of a narrator naming the characters from the book/movie The Outcasts, with the last name he says being Johnny. Another one of my favorite examples of him doing this is a blink and you'll miss it one from Mouth Silence. The track Furries ends with audio of a news anchor reporting on a furry convention, with the last thing she says ending with the phrase "furry friends", which then directly transitions into the next track, called Friends, being a quick joke using the theme song to Friends. The Mouth albums are truly art on another level.

Mouth Dreams took a few listens to really get into for me, but I think it’s my favorite of the quadrillogy musically, very closely followed by Mouth Moods. However, from a comedy standpoint, nothing has topped Mouth Silence for me, with Wndrwll being its peak. In Mouth sounds, the extended Full House riff in Full Mouth goes on just slightly too long(in a good way). You think it’s over, only for it to come back almost immediately in Alanis. Then, an entire year and album later, in the second to last song, he hits you with the Full House theme one last time.

For me, I find that Mouth Dreams is possibly the least comedic album of the series (as in, it pulls the least amount of jokes) but when it cracks a joke, it's absolutely hilarious. My favourite comedic track out of any in the series has to be Ribs. Something about a ribs commercial being the backing vocals for an edgy rock song all to be about a rumour from like 2004 of Marlin Manson getting his ribs removed to "pleasure himself" is so comedic to me for whatever reason. I also really love the chaotic feeling of the track, it just adds on to the humour for me too. & the fact out of any song, he sampled "Beautiful People" is what really kills it for me. It's just all too perfect. Although, that's not to diminish any album in the series. I agree that probably overall, Mouth Silence is the most comedic album in the series. I love that Full House ending. It's comedic but yet weirdly sad(?). It's like looking back on everything, having a good laugh, and realising it's the end. Such a good starter for the send-off.

This is a fantastic analysis, and whether Neil intended for it to be this deep of not, the fact that people can draw this much out of it goes a long way to show that he's way more than just a master shitposter. I did hear an alternate take on the song that might be worth looking into, this time coming from the POV not of Johnny Cash, but of Rick Astley. Here's a guy who sang a fun, goofy love song that was supposed to make people happy, and now everyone hates him for it. Nobody remembers anything else Astley ever did, his proverbial 'empire of dirt' is a music career that is remembered only for a dorky song that makes everyone instantly angry.

Yeah, I actually read that alternate interpretation in the comments of the uploaded version of the song. I think it's definitely a valid way of looking at it. I just find that the prior inclusion of Cash's work on the album, as well as the preceding Nine Inch Nails track makes it tough for me not to have a look at it from Cash's perspective instead. And thanks for the kind words regarding this video :) It was one of my favourites to make on this channel

I am of the opinion that this thing he does - concealed within the easily dismissed concept of ‘mashup’ - it isn’t quite music, it isn’t exactly comedy, and it isn’t a mere synergy of the two. this is a new art form, totally unique and still in its infancy, with just one artist for now - but there will be hundreds to follow. I can’t quite put my finger on why it is so significant, but I know others can feel it too. that said, when I first discovered these albums I texted dozens of youtube links to friends and family and got a lot of concerned replies about whether I was ‘doing ok’ or ‘needed to talk to someone’

Niel made Mouth Dreams while the pandemic started he started to make the mashups in 2019 and he had the Mouth Dreams (exito) song done back in 2016 but it was just Smash Mouth's All Star but the speed of the vocals is slowed down but the the pitch of it but the tempo. So he added Drowning by the Backstreet Boys the part that goes "Love me mouth to mouth, cover me with dreams" looping it without any breaks in the audio then added rain and the wooshing sound which it is a hidden Easter egg that is in Wingdings that translates to Do Not Trust Shrek and then the Wake Up part from System Of A Down's song Chop Suey, so the song is about going into a Backstreet Boy's concert in a dream and then it is invaded by All Star and all the Shrek memes until someone says wake up in your ear. Also the Johnny song is great because it puts the Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails's Hurt and then the vocals of Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Ashley then adding crowd boos and the a cheer in it.

I can't answer for the first and third, but Get Happy isn't just annoying. It's frightening. I've seen someone compare it to being brainwashed in musical form. It opens with a sample from a McDonald's kids cd slowed down to sound monstrous and threatening, a disembodied foice menacing saying he hopes you're happy. This is followed by a group singing, "Come on get Happy, we'll make you happy." Just those lines. Not the whole song, which is joyous and inviting, just that line. It's not an invitation, it's an order. But it's not acting threatening. It just is. It pretends to have your interests, while saying, "get Happy or else", all the while this artificial beat slowly forms around it. And the song that follows it is has lyrics about power and who gets it from Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Beautiful People, with the line, "Capitalism has made it this way, old fashioned fascism will take it away." Smack dab in the middle of it Get Happy is about emotional labor under Capitalism. It's about being forced to keep a smile no matter what you're faced with internally or externally, not with physical violence, but the violence inherent to capitalism, dying of starvation, thirst, and exposure because you need money to eat, drink, and have shelter.

Another thing Johnny does to recontextualize music is much simpler. It divorces Astley's voice from the generic pop synths it's normally accompanied by, and by putting it together with a more subdued instrumental track, allows the listener to appreciate that Rick's got a beast of a singing voice.

hey, I know I'm late but I've had another theory about "Just a Baby" from the same album and how it shows the story of naivety in those of higher social standing and the upholding of a standard is built on the hurt of others who don't conform to it. With him representing an upper-class citizen and his "mother" being a stand in for those in power and giving him the belief of purity with things such as "always be a baby, don't ever be a gun". With afterwards him infantilizing himself as his "mother" had, saying that he was just a baby when he shot that man and trying to push off the load of responsibility that comes with such. "baby prison" representing a lighter sentence than would otherwise be declared for his crime. "Trains" and "cars" in my reading, are a stand-in for people at large and often in the song those who are oppressed except in the lyric "my mother was a car" in which he begins to realize that those in power are no better than the rest, and further "my momma shot a man in Reno" he realized that those in power are doing so by force and by oppression. I know this isn't the best read, and this is my first time trying to verbalize these thoughts. I don't know enough about Johnny Cash to know if this is referencing something in his life or if I'm just flat wrong. I hope this wasn't as stupid as it feels after saying it out loud is all I mean

This is a very informative and entertaining video that encouraged me to think deeply about something I never would have thought to. While I love both songs I’ve listened to the NIИ version a lot more. I never thought of the line “I will make you hurt” as about suicidal tendencies. To me, that line embodies this feeling of spite towards those around him. I’m about to get really pretentious so stop reading if that sort of thing bothers you. NIИ’s Hurt is a piece of the concept album The Downward Spiral (slight spoilers for the concept). Over the course of the album the narrator is hateful, abusive, and violent to the people around him, and in return he is hurt, mistreated, and abandoned. Hurt is the last track, occurring after the narrator has committed suicide, and acts as this strange posthumous account, of the protagonist looking back and reflecting on his life and his final descicion. In that light, “I will make you hurt” is a non-apology, a promise to hurt those who hurt him. Contrast that to the Cash version, which evokes this idea of an old man apologizing to all those he has hurt. These two viewpoints each work spectacularly with the last stanza “if I could start again a million miles away, I would keep myself, I would find away.” In NIИ’s case it means: if he got another shot, the protagonist would “keep himself”, by standing up for himself, by pushing through instead of ending it. In the Cash version it takes on this meaning of Cash promising that he would do better to those around him: not lose himself to drugs and abandon his loved ones. All that said, I loved the in-depth interpretation of Cash’s Hurt given in this video, I think it was very thought-out and well presented.

Do note that Johnny comes immediately after a track that features the Generic Movie Announcer Guy listing characters that are ostensibly from the Outsiders movie, such as Inspector Gadget and Bumblebee Tuna. This track finished with a single, thoughtful, Johnny.

But also with age, just the passage of time. If you look at the time course of popularity of musicians, or just their careers generally, it's rare for them to even stay as popular as he did. Plus it's practically a cliche of musicians' lifestyles. A great New York Press writer whose name now slips my mind gave a generic description of dissolute and down-at-heel types you might see on the street, saying some would call them bums, while others would call them musicians. (Of course others might take them for journalists!)

10:00 Smoothing over one layer of absurdism, my first interpretation of Baby was that the baby in question actually willfully took the blame for shooting a man in Reno to save his mother, even though, well, he's a baby. I, an uneducated listener missed the importance of Johnny at the time, but Baby made me feel something.

You know how a lot of tracks in the follow-up Mouth albums have kind of sequels to previous tracks? "Johnny" has got to be that for "Tears in Chocolate Rain". They're both so strange sounding on the surface but are actually incredibly serious beneath.

I think NiN's Hurt means more. Johnny Cash's one is all about regret, but NiN's one feels like it's in pain, and the end where he goes "If I could go back again, I'll do it so much better" the song SCREAMS in a way that says "No you won't"

When I first heard this album, I didn't like it as much. It wasn't as... slapstick, I guess, as I was expecting. The more I listen to it, the more I appreciate it. That's the big difference I guess, I _enjoy_ the other Mouth albums, but I _appreciate_ this one. Even the jokey songs have some meaning to them, even if only in the undertones. There's a song literally called "Get Happy", whose lyrics mostly consist of 'come on, get happy!", but I can't help but get just-don't-be-sad-argument vibes from it, which is somehow the opposite of both the lyrical content _and_ the instrumental tone of the song. Power of context, I guess. The song Aammoorree could be about a funny guy mixing up his sentences, getting drunk, and saying all sorts of things (including "when you've had too much wine") are love, but it's also about a guy mixing up his sentences, getting drunk, and seemingly thinking that love is when you've had too much wine. Grasp gradually slipping away more as the song goes on. Compare that to Mouth Moods. The songs are absolutely fun and I enjoy them a lot and regularly, but... Maybe I'm just dense, but I don't feel any deeper meaning in Floor Corn, The Starting Line, _Bustin?_ Ok, maybe T.I.M.E. can be dug into if I really try. But with Mouth Dreams, it doesn't feel like digging. It feels like uncovering. But then, maybe I'm just interpreting dreams here.

I always approached the song from the other direction, from the angle of NGGYU being Rick's one and only megahit. Everyone's heard it, and everyone faux hates it. You go to his music just released and you'll see dozens of comments just repeating lines of NGGYU. He has nearly 40 years of experience and a cheesy love song from the beginning is all most people know of him. Everyone pretends they hate it, but its the one thing they love from him. Hes a star by being turned into a joke. An empire of dirt.

People are always underestimating entertainment, thinking it lowbrow, just because they don't get it. I assume there's a shitload of stuff I don't get, because I keep getting surprised by what I do get. Then I try to help other people "get" stuff, and they don't believe me, saying it wasn't intended. All the work that goes into making things subtle obscures it from them, and then they sneer at it.

Okay so full ask, I need to ask. Do you think Yahoo has a connection to both it feeling like the funeral to Yahoo Answers despite coming a whole 8 months before it died and also with the fact that there is a pronunciation of God's name YHWH out that that pronounces it Yahoo? Perhaps giving it a sort of "God is dead and we killed him" kind of vibe to it?
