We have armed security guards patrol in my neighborhood. I feel safer when they drive by than I do when the cops drive by. The dudes they hire are local and are sent to the police academy, but they are not a police force, just security.

State laws vary on what powers security guards have. We can have "security police" in my state where they have police authority but only at their place of employment while on duty. Also , store security (loss prevention) has arrest powers in all cases of retail fraud including misdemeanors. Security guards here can only arrest for a felony.

RFI-Crypto Lab I work for SEAL in Houston. We have arrest powers for misdemeanors, breach of peace and felonies. Even driving under the influence while on property or in the subdivision or neighborhoods we work. Thats why we pay into an account called Texas Law Shield in case anyone wants to go to trial for a SEAL arrest. Its not a bad gig if you're going to be in Law enforcement or just a side job. Time passes fast on neighborhood patrol but soooo slow if you have to work a parking lot. I'm just worried about retention because of the low pay though. They give raises but its not enough

God bless them! In North Carolina, if they are private police (like campus police) they are regarded the same as police minus the ETJ....also they have ZERO retirement.... Still they can arrest you, enforce all NC laws, and even chase you for ever if the crime you committed happened in their presence... however, in NC they aren't retired cops, nor guards. No, these are sworn law enforcement that go through the say back ground even when switching agencies with active duty.

Glad I left that city years ago. Albuquerque is hands down the least law-abiding city I've ever lived in. I was shopping at the Smith's on Carlisle around Christmas once and the poor lady who was ringing the bell outside for the Salvation Army came into the store in tears, hysterical, because somebody ran off with her donation bucket. I'm serious, they must have taken some bolt cutters and just cut the chain off it and ran. And my brother-in-law had his bicycle stolen on the UNM campus. He had it locked with one of those cables instead of the steel U-bar -- no problem for a thief there.

In my state they have "Special Police Officers" which can work for either a municipality as a part-time police officer, or for a private company/college with full arrest privileges while on duty and on the property. A bit of a nicer option than a security guard trying to look like a cop...

Though they're virtually never uniform, marked, or professional, and occasionally may bring people who may be incompetent or make bad choices. I support having neighborhood watch, but I won't say that they are more professional than private security. Besides, hiring private security brings jobs, while neighborhood watch is usually done by volunteers in their spare time.

And the weapons of both would be the same. I get where you're coming from nonetheless. =)

Tony 022912 I understand but basic training still turns regular civilians into efficient fighters doesn't it? I was never in the military but I did security back in the past to pay off some school. I mostly dealt with petty criminals like grab and runs, drug users, fights etc. I'm sure someone with basic military training can handle that kind of stuff. Thanks for your service by the way.

Who says they are not free to leave? The only reason police can arrest you is by using force. If anyone other than the police say they are detaining you, just walk away.If they touch you then it's assault, and any charges put against you in court will then be thrown out because of the assault

you don't have to be a security to detain someone , any citizen have the right to detain anyone they think broke the law it's called citizen arrest. i'm a cashier , and one night at work someone tried to do a beer run i stopped him and detained him until the police showed up. because i have the right to do so, it's simple

In a small town with a population of less than about 3,000 citizens there is not enough Taxes coming in to form a real Police Department. The small town can usually afford to hire about 5-6 full time Security Guards and buy two used Police Cars. 5 or 6 personnel, each working 32-40 hours per week can guarantee 1 or 2 armed guards patrolling the small town. Sure, they are not real police, but can investigate incidents and call the real cops (usually county sheriff's deputies) if needed. Guards on patrol can cruise the streets looking for prowlers, drunk vagrants, etc. and respond to burglar alarms in 3-5 minutes and either "scare away" or arrest burglary suspects. Having the guards armed with Sidearms, pepper spray, batons and Tasers means they can defend themselves while approaching miscreants. Keeping 6 armed patrol officers in 1-2 patrol vehicles would cost about $350,000 a year whereas a comparable Police Department would need a budget of slightly over $1 Million Dollars. The city in question could decide what they can afford, but my $350K budget could guarantee decent pay w/benefits and a higher training standard than the "cheapest" unarmed guards could offer. The extra money would be money well spent if you want good quality Security Personnel.

+Alkatraz Everyone's needs, wants, and budgets are different. While some people may like the state to provide law enforcement, others may prefer trying to decentralize the system (especially if state or other agencies are deemed to be untrustworthy or something), or feel that state agencies may not be working for them well enough and/or the state is having a hard time stationing agents in sparsely populated areas. This isn't intended to be for or against everything, just giving a little insight.

In the US there is state police in many states, while others have highway patrol which more so concern themselves with highway policing. The problem with state police is they can be stretched thin being they have to cover a large area. Many states will have a sheriff's department in particular, rural areas, where municipal police would be too expensive or impractical.
