Some Central Banks have adopted a negative interest rate policy on reserves held with them. Here's what that means. #MarketplaceAPM #CentralBank #InterestRate

I imagine this applies to not only banks but anyone holding foreign currency with expectation of appreciation relative to their own. I'm thinking of the Swiss franc for example.

Instead of banks putting their money with the central bank and earn negative rates, why can't they keep the money themselves? Ie if a high street bank offer negative rates, a person can keep money under his pillow, thus preventing rates going negative.

can you explain why large institutions pledge cash collateral when there is negative interest - how will it benefit them?

How can the country be left badly? As lower interest rates usually increase the investment expenditure which results in growth and higher NI. The NI causes an increase in consumer expenditure and again results in higher NI. Can I please get an explanation? Thanks

In what ways, if any, are these negative interest rates conveyed to the consumer? P.s. Love these videos!

We live in a fiat currency world, Central Banks don't create money - banks do every time they create a loan. All money is made out of debt and this is the problem with the system - it is one big ponzi scheme and once no one will take on any more debt it collapses. The Central Banks see this coming and are desperate for people (who are already over indebted) to spend and invest their money into the economy so they use this ploy - they punish savers for keeping their money in money market and savings accounts. Problem is that once deflation takes hold ( and that's what is going on now and has been happening in Japan for 20 years) people will not spend but rather hoard their money. Basically our economy and money system is screwed and there needs to be a big reset and the Central Banks know this but are trying to put this off as long as they can.

How can a country with debt be considered sovereign? That's a paradox. put monetary policy in governmental control. abolish interest rates. no third party needed to print money. = states cannot have debt. That's at least what Aristotle said..

Seriously doubt if I would give bank money for negative interest rates.

I thought when banks lend money they just create the principal, and do not borrow money from its depositors!

i have learnt that the reserves have NOTHING to do with lending and it’s a myth. any amount lent is like money created by the bank and is put on the accounts as asset and liability against respective parties. (ref: Prof Steven Keen)
