Have a good day!
Great video, clearly explained with good examples! What about negative obligation or necessity, what alternatives are there for MUST NOT? can we use CAN’T or NOT ALLOWED?
@Englishwithjennifer
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. I agree with your suggestion to use CAN'T and NOT ALLOWED for prohibition. I'll have to tackle modal verbs (as well as semi-modals and other alternatives) little by little. It's such a broad topic. This week I just wanted to help learners decide choose between MUST, HAVE TO, and MUST for a specific purpose, such as a personal obligation, a rule, or a strong recommendation. I'd like to offer more lessons on modals in 2019. :)
Happy Christmas mam. I wish you a peaceful year ahead. Thanks for answering all the questions that I asked. One more question though. What's the difference between fill in and fill out?
@Englishwithjennifer
5 жыл бұрын
Happy holidays to you! :) FILL IN and FILL OUT can sometimes be used the same way. Here are some differences: FILL IN a gap. FILL IN the missing words in an exercise. FILL OUT a form.

I love the idea, but it's tricky with copyrights. I'll give the idea more thought.
Wrapping a gift also adds a surprise element to a gift. Jennifer must be very busy with her Christmas prepations. I have to pay tax. Why did you call have to semi modal? You have to have a passport n visa to visit Jennifer on Christmas. You don't have to send Christmas cards to everyone. My tooth aches. I must see a dentist. You are a chief executive officer of this company so you have to be disciplined. Unless you are disciplined, you can't expect your employees to fall in line. I need you to suggest me a better job option. You must read Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I am sure you will love it. Please check my grammar. Wish Jennifer a joyous and wonderful year end. God bless you.
@Englishwithjennifer

Thank you for the good wishes. :) Happy New Year to you! So sorry you have to pay your taxes. We do that in the late winter/early spring in the U.S. I like the name "semi-modal." Some use "phrasal modal," but I think that could get confused with "phrasal verb." Good examples. Correction: I need you to suggest a better job for me. (Grammatically correct now, but I'd say, "I need to talk to you. Do you think you could give me some career advice? I'd like to consider all my options.") I'll be reading an excerpt of Dickens tonight with one of my private students, btw. :) Glad you're familiar with his work.

I have to go to the dentist's tomorrow; I have a toothache. I mustn't wear light clothes; it's still cold. I don't need to cook today, as I didn't eat all of my lunch yesterday. I feel bored, so I need to hang out with my friends. I don't have to make my bed; I didn't sleep in it yesterday.
