I haven't played the Sax in 40+ years but just recently decided to try it again. Found a decent looking Bundy II on the internet and when it got here the neck cork was kaput. So I ordered the cork, watched your video 2 or 3 times, and the fix was a breeze. Your vid is 4 years old but the info is still VERY relevant. THANKS for sharing this. A+++

Was part of the First US Army Field Band at Ft. Meade back in 75-76 (Bicentennial!). Army Field Band was the guys on the other side of the base who got all the high profile gigs. ;) Hardly played much for the past 25 - 30 years and the neck cork needs replacing, so I found you here. Good to reconnect with a part of my past.

So, I decided to order a cork replacement kit rather than taking my saxophone to the shop. I gotta tell you, with the help of this video I was very successful. It came out better than I thought it would have. When my fellow sax player friend saw what I did, he got mad. He said it costed him $100 at the repair shop for the same quality work. Really nice work. I've been repairing for over 15 years. I like seeing someone take pride in a neck cork. My technique is very similar to yours. I have a pretty handy cork scraper with a tighter angle made for sax necks. No idea where I got it, but keep an eye out, very handy. take care, Scott

Great vid! Wish I had found it sooner but it is still helpful. Cork was coming off and tried to tape it. Piece finally came off and was lost completely. Will need to replace now and definitely feel confident enough with this to review!

A complete pad replacement or overhaul is outside the scope of these videos. Your best bet is to take it to a qualified repair person the be sure it will be in top playing condition.

If you are determined to try a repad do the first one on a junk horn - that way you're only out the cost of the pads. I was given two junk tenors to revive. I surprised myself (and the technician who gave them to me) and now have two more really good tenors that nobody wants, even at cost!

I just bought 2 saxophones at a yard sale yesterday for $50.00 ($25.00 each) One is in Mint condition and the other one needs a cork job and also replacement of the pads.. any chance of a detailed production on pad replacement.? One is a Alto and the other a Tenor Sax. The Tenor is a Paris made Selmer about 50-60 years old the Alto is a Mark Vl Selmer..

I'd want to thank you for this very good and informative video. After seeing it my only question is regarding what kind of wax you were applying to the cork in the end of the procedure. Would just any wax work or is there some qualities that's better suited for the job?

Just use cork grease.

Well done video. Do you do anything different when re-corking a neck that has a ring at the tip? (eg. Selmers have this)

How come they don't post repair videos anymore?

Sanding actually works perfectly to get a bevel and it takes about 5-10 seconds to get a nice edge.

I cringe at seeing the trumpet and clarinet (in other videos) standing without any support. These seem to fall over and get damaged giving me more work to do. I try to tell musicians to never stand these instruments on the bell so they don't get damaged. Pretty good information there on the neck replacement. I never use acetone because it is not really needed, and it is nasty on one's hands, melts plastic. So I use mineral spirits unscented as it works perfectly on the neck removing excess glue.

I sent my alto out to get a new cork and when I got it back the cork wasn't up all the way to the guide ring at the top and I was like ?? I pulled it off because it wouldn't work, air got in and it was all scratched were you were carful not to I was so irritated because its a 2k 20 year old selmer sax! looks like you know what your doing thanks for your vids

He uses a wrong technique to scrap the cork at 4:26 he is putting pressure against the octave pad. This way the pad can be damaged. It is a good idea to remove the neck octave key before start to work.

How much for tenor sax?

plis milled cork //must be uber quality and better have 6 for 2 to work on end still expensive cork what it is like a 10 000 dioll per square meter,,even that for 1 seem on sax would be like few 10 bucks top lol

disrespected the mess out of those Parker solos.

Read 2nd..i know nothing about replacement of pads ..what can you tell me.. a couple of the pads came off while i was cleaning it ..i think they had both been stored in the attic from the previous owner. the lacquer is original on both but on one of them it looks like it has tarnished some. meaning the shine is not like the one that looks new..should i just leave it alone.. what does relacquering do to a sax.. i mean it doesn't have any effect on the performance does it.

Read 3rd..i dont wanna sound ignorant but i dont play a sax and for the price i couldn't pass them up, maybe i can learn to play a sax... someones father had passed away and the nieces were having a yard sale and sold all of the musical instruments that he used back during ww2. according to the girls that sold me the 2 saxophones he was a Army AirForce musician and was connected with Glenn Miller and so now i have his Sax. also got his Trombone for an extra $20.00..

f cork is expensive man you do not strike me as somalian // you could use ,, not best buy you can belive 2 large champagne corks//talking 5 liter or 15 liter jubilee bottles ,,they cost a lot ,, but 2 normal 2 liter corks can do yob no way to find what is in when put together //so cork expensive lol go get strings for bass

Also when you make those little grunting/exhaling sounds it gets REALLY annoying. Try to keep the audio smooth and not have a whole bunch of breathing in it.

Honest opinion here. That moment when you were waiting for the glue to dry and then was like "oh hey!" like you noticed the person who is watching the video is there, yeah, that was a bit cringy. And it made it even worse when you attempted to whistle while you were waiting, but it just sounded like a bit of air coming out of your mouth, not even a whistle. I'm sorry for the negativity, but just my honest opinion here.
