    Thanks for the video. I dropped this machine down a full set of stairs. Landed on bare concrete floor. Destroyed the cabinet and bent a spool pin. Am using it today to sew facemasks. Never lift your machine by the plastic handle. I knew this.at the time but had to be reminded the hard way.

    When people say quiet machine, nothing compares to my vintage Kenmore that sews so gentle even at higher speed. This clanks a lot in comparison.

    Wow! Does this ever bring back memories!!! I still have my Mom's Necchi in storage. It's been quite a while since I've seen it, but I can remember her teaching me how to use it. I remember controlling it with a knee pedal (pretty sure that's not a technical term!). It weighed a ton! Had to be careful lowering it back into the cabinet. I remember taking the bus to go to the sewing store for a replacement belt. After a while, she got resourceful & bought 2 at a time..."just in case". The good old days, to be sure!

    I picked up a 1953 BU Nova in very good condition. What a great precision tool, well crafted, real smooth gearing (like butter), and heavy duty/very heavy casting. Weighs 40 lbs. with carrying case. Motor can slow and hold at a crawl. And yes, very quiet. I made an excellent purchase choice. I love it! Was very surprised actual how small the machine is. It's somewhat compact.

    I just picked one of these up for $40. Not knowing much about it, I think I came out in the “GREEN”. I have Singer 111 W155 and a Singer 257, this has quickly become my favorite. Slow, easy, and still powerful. I feel that if James Bond could sew this would have been the machine he would have used. Thank you fo making this.

    Yup, I have a sailboat. Just got one for my sailboat projects that I have lined up. The cool thing about these BUs is they use high-shank feet, which opens you up to a whole world of useful industrial feet with attachments. I paid 156.00 with delivery on eBay. It looks pretty clean and has a full range of accessories and a case that's in fair condition. Thank you for the videos!

    Thank you so much for getting back to me on a walking foot for the Nova BU. Its makes sense if available and made in 1954, my mom would have had it, and its never mentioned in the manual. It runs great, like the heavy duty workhorse it is, and I have the full 7-drawer mahogany cabinet it drops down into for storage.

    Hi Dana. It really depends on what kind of leather you are wanting to sew. Density is hugely important. Garment weight leather like you see me stitching on is just fine. Any leather, no matter how thick, has to be flexible and not hard/dense. No matter what you see in other videos, I would NOT sew any kind of men's leather belts or knife sheathes or any kind of shoe sole hard leathers. Even most industrial machines will not handle those. Only special walking foot machines can sew on heavy leather and even then, only certain models of industrials. When working with light garment leathers such as the ones I show, you want to use leather tip needles which make the machine's work easier. Good luck.

It's obviously sat for a long time and needed a good cosmetic cleaning, oiling, and detailing of the shuttle race...... but it purrs like it was new! Thanks for your informative and well executed videos, they helped me to get my BU up and running, and learn how to operate it. Did I say that I paid $5. for it

    The zig zags on a Necchi machine was different and unique from other sewing machines because their oscillating shuttles were not stationary like conventional machines. The Necchi sewing machines shuttles were designed to move from left to right with the needle shaft to create a stitch for zig zag and decorative stitches. This reduced the access time between the shuttle hook and the needle thread during the stitch formation. It also reduced stitch skipping and enhanced stitch accuracy 100%. Great video.

    Hi, I purchased this same machine with the cabnant you mentioned, in beautiful condition. (tons of cob webs)Found it and at a thrift store, paid $75.00 total. However the cords look very old and somewhat hard so I am afraid to plug it in. When I asked the associate at the thrift store if I could test it out, another customer overheard me. She approached us and stated, it was her machine and it sews beautifully. I took her word for it and brought it home. Haven't had the electoral cords replaced as of yet. Can I trust any sew and vac astablishement to change cords out? Thank you so much for your video. Fun facts and information. I own 7 sewing machines and had never heard of a Necchi before. It came with the instruction book, perchaced information along with many excecories and an old bobbin case full of bobbins.

  • @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    I think I "Might" know. Most of the Necchi's I've come across have speed controllers but few had them as foot pedals. Speed control was either by a pedal style device or a box unit mounted under the table with a lever connected so the sewer could have their feet free to rest. The lever is normally found just under the table to the right side of where you might place your knees. NOTE: Before trying to plug in the machine again, I would keep it unplugged while you have someone hold up the machine tilted back so you can take a flashlight and look down below to see where the power cord from the machine (its very short) plugs into another cord that leads to the knee speed control box normally mounted to the right interior front panel of the table. ALSO NOTE: Necchi machines were made a lot more robustly than were their electrical cords. ALL CORDS can dry rot and need replacement but Necchis tend to fare a bit worse than others with age and time. They can be restored of course and you can get replacement power cords. They are remarkable works of engineering for their time (or any time for that matter!)

    Hand crank machines were sometimes used by people in the marinas for sail repair. If you were on a boat, you might want a sewing tool that did not require electricity. Tailors also would use hand crank machines for some types of work.

  • @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hello. You don't need to use an original Necchi motor. Often, when machines were imported to the US during that era, the motors were sometimes sourced in the US and later in Japan. The key is to find a motor that will use the bracket that attaches to the side of the machine head (main body). Once you find that, you should be able to use it and get a new belt as well if needed.

  • @STEVEM730
    @STEVEM7306 жыл бұрын

    About how much do these cost to restore. I have one that supposedly worked many years ago and was stored in a hot attic for 30 years. The belt is rotted off of it and the motor turns hard.

  • @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    5 жыл бұрын

    Machines that have the unfortunate fate of being stored in attics can be restored. The heat in attics tends to cause old sewing oil to gum up so it has to be cleaned before re-lubricating the machine. Heat also degrades rubber parts which can be replaced. As for costs, the highest cost is for labor if you have the machine overhauled. Parts for this model are not all that expensive. Its rare that parts are a significant part of a restoration. For example, a belt for this machine runs about $8. For my work, its almost always the extensive hours I spend going thru the machine to prepare it for sewing again.

  • @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Cassandra. It's always important to have any machine (which you feel has questionable wiring) inspected by a qualified technician to be sure it has any needed repairs or replacements in the electrical components taken care of. People do this for all sorts of electrical appliances, not just sewing machines. Some Sewing-Vacuum centers might be able to do this for you or you might try people that do TV repair and inquire as to whether they feel they could properly repair it. I don't ever plug in or try to run anything that does not look sound before having any electrical repair needs addressed. It may take a while but there should be someone local to you that can safely repair the wiring needs that this Necchi you are considering has.

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Oreonis You could be right about the motor. It should only spin towards you if you are facing the machine. Generic replacement motors are available. You can search Ebay and other places. FYI, its very important to verify that the mounting holes on the motor will line up with your motor bracket. If not, some websites sell brackets that can fit older Singers though I'm not totally sure they would fit Necchis. If you ask the seller, you are a lot more likely to get one that is compatible. The replacement motors come in a variety of amp/power ratings with most under 1.5 amps.

    @@mcjazzaroni I'm not aware that they made a Walking Foot attachment available for this machine back then. You can certainly adjust the pressure of the presser foot on this model. Whether it has enough clearance to accomodate quilting layers will vary based on number of layers, thickness of each etc. You may be able to find a modern High Shank Walking Foot attachment but whether it would be compatible with the shape of this machine's body is unclear. Also, I have not found that Walking Foot attachments always provide what they promise and they also reduce the clearance under the foot for items that have multiple layers.

  • @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    5 жыл бұрын

    If I understand what you wrote correctly, I would suggest that most (not all) mechanical issues related to these machines are usually caused by lack of use and oiling. Necchis have wonderful engineering and close tolerances between moving parts for a machine of that era and so they do not tolerate sitting idle for long periods. It can help to prevent this by storing a machine indoors in climate controlled environments. Other areas to inspect before purchasing are the motor and wiring which can often need repair or replacing before safely using the machine. I would be sure to take this into consideration when you purchase any machine and Necchis in particular. That way, if it needs some work done, you can negotiate this as part of the price you pay. But then, this is a strategy for purchasing any mechanical item used.

    what is difference between the bu and the bu nova?

  • @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    @VintageSewingMachineGarage

    7 жыл бұрын

    The BU was the first (or one of the first) domestic grade machines that Necchi put on the market. The Necchi Nova was a later update of the design where they changed a few things such as the tension assembly and the logo design. The Nova name was also used to help differentiate the increasing number of models that Necchi was offering. BF was often for Straight stitch only version of the Nova, and the Mira was used on the "Super premium" model etc. The best way to tell which generation of model you have is to pay attention to the shape of the machine's body. When there was a body change, it indicated major design changes; similar to what you see with cars.

    Hello and thank you for asking. The Necchi BU and BU Nova models are very similar but there are 2 primary ways to discern the difference. The BU models were produced first and have a chrome funnel shaped tension dial. Also, the adjustment for stitch width is done with what appears as a knob shaped like a door knob. The BU Nova had a spoon shaped lever or some people would describe this as a golf club shaped lever. Also, the tension dial on the Nova was improved and would have either a black decal in the center or green depending on the model. These are the primary changes that I am aware of between those models.
