NEC/TOKIN capacitor replacement on a Toshiba laptop - random shutdown or restart

Ғылым және технология

Replacement of a 0E907 CPU decoupling capacitor on a Toshiba Laptop. The procedure should be similar on other brands like Samsung. The laptop would randomly restart, even after ruling out software and power adapter problems. More details:

    I believe your soldering method would be greatly improved if you would use a small amount of flux between component and connection point. It will help the solder to stick where you want it. If you can, practice once or twice using old circuit boards and components, it only takes a short time. You will quickly develop a feel for it. When you feel a bit more confident, give the real thing a go at it. But, flux is the friend of solder. It's excellent when a 'fix-it' video like this, can help so many others and continue doing so for years after it was made. Thank you, Jose Faria!

    Jose, Thanks for the video. I just wanted to try and understand your testing of the chip. When you first tested it showed 20mV. At the end you tested it and at first it was jumping all around but you said it was significantly lower. Then you looked like you changed it to Volts instead and it read 1.13V which is significantly higher than the originally test of 20mV.

  • @jfaria

    @jfaria

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi, first of all bear in mind that this test might not be that accurate and might vary a lot between multimeters. Notice that I measured the milivolts in AC mode and the 1.13V in DC mode, the DC mode gives us the DC rail voltage of the CPU, the AC mode measuring a DC power rail measures how much that voltage jumps around. It was jumping around because CPUs use a lot of current, that one probably has 30 amp spikes at full load, so it's normal to see a measurable AC component in the power rail, but notice that it never went above 2 or 3 mV with the new capacitors. The 1.1V reading was just to make sure the DC voltage was normal, and voltages between 0,8 and 1,3 volts DC are probably reasonable.

  • @walterhayden5101

    @walterhayden5101

    6 жыл бұрын

    OK I think I follow. So testing mine I see that around startup time the DC voltage is 1.13V and stays pretty steady will windows 7 setup disk loads drivers, but after it gets to the setup screen to select options and continue it drops to about .764V for at least 10 seconds or more before finally shutting off. Im just trying to determine if this chip is definitely the cause because replacing it. This is an A305 model so it definitely has the years on it. Definitely seems similar to the other cases out there Ive seen. I have already isolated the board and it has nothing but the CD player plugged into it. I have also cleaned thoroughly and re thermal pasted the chips. The odd thing is is always seems to turn off the fan shortly before it happens and the heatsink definitely does build up heat, but that may just be a sideeffect from the chip. I have tested it with a large fan blowing on the board constantly and the heatsink is cool and it still happens. Any thoughts on the readings Im getting?

  • @jfaria

    @jfaria

    6 жыл бұрын

    +Walter Hayden I think what you are seeing is normal, after Windows starts the computer starts using all the power saving features it can, including reducing the cpu voltage and disabling the fan until the CPU gets too hot for passive cooling, that is why the measuring mode I was interested in was the AC voltage, the DC measurement was just an afterthought.

  • @jfaria

    @jfaria

    Hi, the problem is the Equivalent Series Resistance, you need extremely low ESR capacitors, like those I linked in the description. Electrolytic capacitors usually have higher ESR than tantalum, and with the added cables it increases even further. You can keep trying different combinations of capacitors until it works, but to be sure you need to use capacitors similar to those I've used.

  • @hjrios

    @hjrios

    OMG, it booted again!! Thank you!! I thought that I made a short circuit in the CPU socket because of the excess of hot air when I removed the Tokin. Boas josé. Tenho um Toshiba A200 (quase com 9 anos...) Que tem sido carregado nos ultimos 3 anos com softwares pesados que tenho de utilizar na minha licenciatura em Eng. Eletrotecnica. Infelizmente há uns meses para cá tem-se desligado aleatóriamente sendo mais provável desligar-se quando trabalha a mais altas frequências, decidi defenir na bios o modo de frequencia da cpu a: "always low", ou seja, neste pc fica a funcionar a 997 megaHertz nem chega a 1giga haha. Aguentou-se bem durante umas semanas, mas neste momento tambem se desliga para estas baixas frequencias. Será que esta substituiçao dos codensadores NEc/Tokin resolve o meu problema? Há umas semanas atrás para a realização de um relatório de um trabalho experimental tive que pesquisar sobre o fenómeno ESR e fiz uma anologia com o que se passava com o meu pc, mas não sei se se trata da mesma coisa. Boas, tendo em conta que esse A200 provavelmente usa um condensador NEC/TOKIN no CPU, é bastante provável que seja essa a causa, visto que eles se degradam com o tempo. Tendo em conta que os kits de condensadores de substituição são relativamente baratos e que o portátil ao reiniciar aleatoriamente já está perto de ser inútil, não custa nada tentar.

  • @jfaria

    7 жыл бұрын

    Could you elaborate? What do you consider top up capacitors? If you are talking about a couple of small low ESR ceramic capacitors and a couple of higher ESR large capacitors in parallel, it will probably not work, remember that CPUs use a lot of current, some laptops can go up to 40 or 50 amperes, that's why all the capacitors should have low ESR, so they can quickly provide the stored energy when required.

  • @jfaria

    @jfaria

    7 жыл бұрын

    Creio que não. Quanto mais condensadores estiverem presentes, mais estável será a alimentação do CPU, no entanto chega a um ponto que ou não se notam melhorias, ou a fonte de alimentação fica sobrecarregada e pode ficar instável. Acho que não é o caso com 6 condensadores, a fonte não deve ter problema nenhum, mas como funciona sem falhas apenas com 4 e os condensadores são caros, acho que não vale muito a pena usar 6. De notar que as pessoas que usam mais do que 4 podem ter outro motivo, eu fiz questão de frisar que um dos parâmetros mais importantes do condensador de substituição é o valor ESR, é possível que os condensadores das pessoas que precisam de 6 tenham ESR ligeiramente mais altos e eles precisem dos 6 para compensar.

    First open it up again and make sure you didn't accidentally short-circuited anything surrounding the capacitors you've installed, that happened to me once and that's the most likely scenario. It might be a blob of solder touching a via on the PCB, or a small capacitor that was slightly moved and is causing a short-circuit. Inspect the area thoroughly. If that doesn't work, measure the voltage in the capacitors. If you measure it in the AC millivolt range, what is the value that you get?

    1,2V is the DC component, the AC component, or ripple, is what might be causing your troubles, but if you have a NEC/TOKIN decoupling capacitor there is a good chance it is your problem.

    Hi José, my toshiba laptop turns on for about 10-15 sec. and then is shut off at Windows load time. At the bios settings, same thing. So, it's not the HDD. The motherboard has 4 of 330uf capacitors, not a Nec/Tokin one. Two of them work at 1.030V, the others at 1.050V and 1.190V. It is good, right? So, where do you think is the problem? Because battery works fine my reasoning is that all components are fine (TOKIN included) except the parts that are discrete to ac power adapter circuitry. I'm in the process of replacing battery IC because this IC outputs an ACOK line to the SuperIO chip. So that's my guess from looking at schematic thus far. Did you manage to fix your problem of power shutt offs on ac only??? I've tried other ac adapters and shut off happens in bios even after the computer sits while I'm watching the telly. Very strange problem. Usually its the other way around with battery problems.

    Hi Jose. I would appreciate your advice about this issue. I'm a total amateur regarding repairing laptops but I have Satellite A300 and it seems there is a problem with that capacitor in my case also. I have TOKIN 0E907 type in the machine. But, I don't have spare parts as you have. I've found 4 KO 157 6K conductive polymer capacitors (datasheet.octopart.com/T520D476M016ATE035-Kemet-datasheet-8325930.pdf). Can I use it as a replacement instead of the original (tokin 0E907). Your opinion, will it work?

  • @jfaria

    @jfaria

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi, 150uF x 4 is 600uF, lower than the 900uF the original capacitor had, but if they are very low ESR they will probably work. That code is not enough to know the full details, but at least they are made by a reputable company and they appear to be from a series with reasonably low ESR. If you have difficulties buying proper replacements you might want to try them, but there is a high chance it will not work, the capacitors you have are rated for 6V and small capacitors with high capacitance and extremely low ESR usually come with very low voltage ratings, like 2.5V. If it doesn't work, you can buy proper replacements on on sites like eBay, people are selling replacement kits, search for "nec tokin tantalum" and find a seller that sells to where you live.

  • @jfaria

    @jfaria

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Sri Hari Karthik Hi, it should be fine. In this case you want a capacitance that is close to the original and the part you have available, 0e128, is larger and not too far apart from the 0e907. The problem is that either the 0e128 or the 0e907 are a bit hard to solder on the board manually, that's why people usually do what I did in this video and use 4 smaller capacitors instead, it's a lot easier to solder. The last three numbers on those capacitors tell you the capacitance like this: 0eABC, where the capacitance is AB x 10^C So if you want to know the capacitance of the NEC 0e128, you just take the two first numbers, "12" and because the third number is "8" you add eight zeroes, like this: 1200000000 and that gives you the capacitance in pico Farads, to convert to micro Farads you divide by 1.000.000, which gives us 1.200 uF To know the capacitance of the NEC 0e907 the procedure is the same, you take the two first numbers, "90" and because the third number is "7" you add seven zeroes, like this: 900000000 and that gives you the capacitance in pico Farads, to convert to micro Farads you divide by 1.000.000, which gives us 900 uF
