    “Always swap out the gear [if it’s not clear]” Later units had a clear gear and these are not known to have gear-related issues. The bad one actually swells as it yellows which is why it can seize even without cracking up.

    GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods Me either, until I ended up with one. I was kinda hoping for a bad gear since and knowing that my gear was fine just added a lot of uncertainty about what was actually wrong with mine. Because no CD-ROM² adjustment guide existed and no one was confirming that it was close enough to follow a Super CD-ROM² adjustment guide, I opted to swap in a known-good laser from a working Sony Discman first. Got mine from a D180K Car Discman. Because it didn’t do the trick I moved on to the pots and got it working well. The old laser is presumably a good spare. Older CD-ROM² units have a KSS-162A laser assembly and the two are completely interchangeable. A lot of old Sony devices use those, including some Sony-produced models sold under other brands ( Radio Shack “Realistic,” for example).

    Just today i had the exact same issue with the TG 16 cd add-on. I had already got a replacement gear. Local game store got in. I rigged up a power supply using a gamecube PS to power both systems through the dock. I ended up getting the whole setup, the big TG16 carrying case for $200 and hoped i could get someone to repair the cd unit. Then i saw this video and rushed home ASAP. It was the gear and replacing it fixed it!

    Yep, I have one of these that I repaired, there were no teeth missing from the center gear but it was very yellowed and the motor wasn't running. I removed the center gear and the motor ran fine so I replaced the center gear with a new one and it works perfectly. I also recapped the board while I had it apart since I had already ordered in a cap kit with the replacement gear. The only tiny issue is that the replacement gear is a bit noisy, the teeth must not be exactly like the original.

    Banging job, looks beautiful! I too did an IFU-30 optical drive repair about ~3-4 years ago. Ordered one from Japan that got damaged during broken, all kinds of plastic pieces from gears came out in about 4-5 pieces. Wasn’t the classic middle gear issue, but I contacted an ebay seller in China who was selling a middle gear and asked if he happened to have a part that looked like the one I found on the forums when I pieced the broken pieces together. The whole thing was this epic quest to figure out how to repair a 30+ year old drive, I was so happy when I got it working again.

    Superb video, very knowledgeable. I have two of these CD-ROM units. Both brand new in box old stock, but nevertheless the gears will need replacing, so I'll be referring to this video for sure. To the best of my knowledge, this was the very first consumer CD-ROM device brought to market, back in 1988. It's a gorgeous piece of kit and cost a pretty penny back in the day.

    Today an IFU-30 together with a CDR-30 came all the way from Japan to my door. Thanks to Your video,I was daring enough to buy an "untested" unit for pretty cheap. The middle gear was yellowed, like to be expected, and so brittle, it fell apart as i touched it. Replacing the gear wasn't too hard. I lobed everything up with silicon grease and... nothing *lol* So the poking around began, fearing that it might be a dad laser unit. Though i noticed that the laser didn't move to it's start position. "Is the motor dead?" So I connected it to an external source. Nothing again, then it moved a tiny bit, and nothing. After a few more jumpstarts, the motor started to move the laserunit more and more reliable, in the oposite direction with switched polarity too. So it was just a "dirty" motor that wasn't used to moving anymore. Yay! i have a working PC-Engine CD-unit! Thank You ^_^

    Dug out my Cdrom2 setup out of storage quite a few years ago and had the non-spinning disc fault. The set-up had been purchased new in 1990 and not used after I moved to a Duo-R previous to the diagnosed middle gear issue, so the gear is still going to go bad without use. Purchased a couple of replacements from a seller on ebay (didn't realize the washers were so small, I thought the seller had sent me an empty bag) and finally decided to have a go at resurrecting the old CDRom2 unit. Watched this 'tutorial' video twice and after digging out all the stuff, well, .....it's fiddly. You missed out the best bits, trying to remove/attach the small washer and removing/attaching the upper lid magnet. *ucking magnets.....ended up removing the 2 screws on the lid hinge to lay it down flatter to get better access. Everything now seems to work OK and I'm quite pleased considering that for 30 year old tech the only fault that developed was a piece of plastic the size of my little finger nail. Pity that it's going back into the box, replaced by the SSDS3.

    Not all of the pots are variable resistors, despite the PCB silk screen markings. Most are though. If you have to tweak: start with VR103/102.

  • @GadgetUK164

    @GadgetUK164

    Are you sure? they do look like variable resistors? There may be caps across them too which have confused people taking measurements?

  • @emmettturner9452

    @emmettturner9452

    6 жыл бұрын

    GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods I read where someone corrected someone else and explained that one of them was actually a trim capacitor or something. I think it was VR105. I recall getting funny/impossible measurements from that one with a meter and he sounded like he knew what he was talking about, so I believe him. :) The Console5 tech wiki for Super CD-ROM² adjustment actually applies to the same pots on the non-Super CD-ROM² and one of them requires a scope to set properly, though you can tweak and observe how it affect playback/streaming to get it close enough.

    You actually CAN run System Card 3.0 on an EverDrive 2.5, but you want to use the patched version to prevent bus fighting with the IFU’s memory. I’ve been using an Turbo ED 2.5 for playing Castlevania Dracula X, so I know it works. :)

  • @GadgetUK164

    @GadgetUK164

    Isn't that only with a Duo though? Or are you saying the EverDrive 2.5 provides the additional RAM that System Card 3.0 provides?

  • @GadgetUK164

    @GadgetUK164

    6 жыл бұрын

    I see conflicting information on the net lol. Apparently EverDrive 2.4 does have the RAM capability and my understanding is you don't need the 'modded BIOS' if you want to run that? The modded version is required so the BIOS running from the EverDrive doesn't enable the RAM on the EverDrive if your system already has the RAM on board (in the case of the Super CD-ROM2 and the Duo). I will try this later - I hope it works because it will save me getting a System Card 3.0 =D

    GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods Yes, there is definitely conflicting info. I’ve seen those misleading threads myself. Caused me a lot of wasted time and research! You might find a post from me at the very end trying to set the record straight. :) The latest TEDs definitely have the extra RAM that 3.x require but it seems to be more because the TED is now RAM-based where older TEDs were EEPROM/flash based.

  • @emmettturner9452

    @emmettturner9452

    6 жыл бұрын

    GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods I may be wrong about this but my understanding is that the RAM inside the IFU will also conflict with the TED’s RAM so you should used the patched TED for 3.x regardless. I asked the patch author if it’s safe to use unpatched 1.0 and 2.0 for the Altered Beast (SysCard 1.0-only) and Super CD-ROM² Easter eggs (like Dracula X with an unsupported card). He assured me that it was safe.

  • @GadgetUK164

    Thanks! You have a few options - if you are looking for a CD system, consider getting just a standard PC Engine (or Core Grafx), and get the Super SD System 3. That way you can play all games from SD card, dont need any "System Cards" or hucards either. If you want actual CD hardware and dont want to use SD cards etc, you should look at the Duo RX - but they are the more expensive. A step down from that cost wise is probably the Super CD-ROM2, but those are between £150 to £250 still (more than a Super SD System 3). Then finally the cheapest options is probably the Duo, but they typically need recapping. And then theres the IFU and CD-ROM2 like I showed in this video. Cheapest most powerful option imo is basic PCE with a Super SD System 3 - you can still collect actual hucards for that setup, but not CD's as you just stick the ISOs on an SD card. I cannot do repairs and mods for people as I have a full time job and long term health issues =/

    Which model PCE are you using and presumably you are using the same CD-ROM2 as the one here? Are you using a System Card, which version? I would suspect maybe RAM or something either on the system card (if its 3.0 or greater) or perhaps a region thing or something like that...

  • @GadgetUK164

    It could also be the interface between the CD-ROM2 and the PCE, perhaps there's a fault there or a dirty connection / bad brief case interface connection.

  • @GadgetUK164

    The US models sometimes need recapping - so maybe check the capacitors. It could be the IC that drives the focus coils, or bad focus coils on the laser assembly. If you can work out where they are connected you could measure those coils or even test them by driving them with a signal generator (low voltage, like 1v p2p or something). If you have a working unit, try swapping the laser over to rule out problems with the coils or laser.

    Today I got an advertised working CD-ROM2 unit from Japan and the laser doesn’t move at all and the CD doesn’t spin either. When I opened it up, the gears were fine, but a flat plastic piece came off upon opening up the case and it looked like it belonged to the laser assembly because the laser moves very loosely with my fingers. Turning the gears doesn’t move the laser at all. Do I have to get another laser assembly at this point? I’m sure the laser is fine, but that plastic piece was needed to have it operational.

    I suspect you will need to find another system to take the plastic piece from. Unless you can glue or epoxy it back into place. It's worth searching the 3D model websites, just in case someone produced the part in 3D printing. I know the gears can now be 3D printed.

    Ah, the quality of the electrolytic capacitors used on those units vary so wildly between units, the US black CD roms typically are leaking on every unit I've opened so far. I think people storing them in hot sheds and attics are the main culprit. I know recapping seems like a pain, but honestly what alternatives are there if one wishes to preserve it.

    Have you checked the track 0 switch is working? If its shorted when it shouldn't it will think its already at track 0, if its not closing when it should, it will click away forever because it thinks it hasn't reached track 0. If it's still behaving that way even after the switch is proven working, it probably has a digital fault of some kind, maybe with whatever reads that switch input. But it could be a failed MCU or RAM or anything...

    Judging from your wrist band, I'm guessing you got the cold from Blackpool Chris. Hope it wasn't me to pass it on to you. I never would have guessed that cog to be the problem. I never would have guessed you can actually buy a single one of those tiny cogs from hong kong. Amazing! I'm guessing the yellowed cog was slipping on the rod. Something like that. I've got an unrelated question Chris. I'm troubleshooting an original xbox. It's got a faulty power supply. I've taken it out and measured the output but it's not giving any correct voltages. According to the pinout it's supposed to give 12, 5 and 3.3Volts. The big cap on the input side is charging up to about 300Volts so I'm guessing that's alright. The board looks fine by looking at it. Do you have any experience working on these power supplies?

  • @GadgetUK164

    @GadgetUK164

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I think I picked up at Play - lots of people had been recently ill, so don't blame yourself =D Yeah, you can but those cogs from that place in hong kong, or console5 in the US! Sometimes they appear on eBay too! The cog had expanded and was jamming the motor! That's why the driver chip was getting hot and also why the unit was silent. If the cog had slipped I would have been able to hear some sound. Regards the XBOX PSU, if the fuse isn't blowing and the cap is holding 300 volts, that shows the switching transistor isn't shorted. It could have a fault on the transistor though, maybe its not switching. The first thing to do is inspect around carefully looking for any burned out or suspicious looking components. For example, you could have a bad electrolytic, or a burned resistor - maybe an open circuit resistor that looks OK but is open circuit. Something could have gone wrong on the secondary side (where the lower voltages are provided), and if one of those voltages is wrong it will disable the main switching transistor via an opto coupler I think. So the opto could be faulty (little chip looking device with 4 pins, 2 on each side). Other common faults on those are zener diodes failing (components marked with Z prefix). There's no easy answer really other than checking the components you can check and hope there's an obvious clue with a burned component.

    They can be hard to work on (from my experience) - some people might be able to find faults on them quickly! That said, my experience with switch mode PSU's is hit and miss. I find I can fix about 60% of switch mode PSU faults - the other 40% confuse the hell out of me to the point I scrap them for spares.

  • @TheHighlander71

    @TheHighlander71

    Economically there's no point in buying a new one, or even getting another xbox for spares. The thing does have a fuse I've discovered, so hopefully mine's just blown. Doubt it though. I'll have a look. Maybe I can hook up a PC power supply to it. It'll be almost the same.

    It's possible that the laser is weak (despite being visible), or there could be a focus or tracking problem with it. You would take the laser unit off and submerge it in IPA for a few hours, then dry it off - shake it, leave it for a bit - heat with a hair drier to dry off any internal IPA, then clean the lense and re-fit it. Sometimes that can work! Beyond that, it could be something wrong with one of the BTL / H-Bridge driver chips on there maybe. Or even something wrong with the RF amp.
