NEC Code Practice Test (60 Questions with Code Explanations)

This practice test consists of Free National Electrical Code (NEC) 2017 questions. This practice exam helps for preparing Journeyman & Master license exams.
National Electric Code (NEC) is a standard adopted in United States of America for safe installation of electrical wiring and components. For obtaining license for carrying out electrical related works, in depth understanding of the code is necessary. Almost all the license exams will have a section related to NEC code. NEC code is not a book to read just before the exam. The best way to learn the NEC Code is through interaction with others (group study) and attempting number of practice tests.
NEC Code consists of 9 chapters each dividing into four groupings: General Requirements; Specific Requirements; Communications Systems and Tables
Chapter 1: General
Chapter 2: Wiring and Protection
Chapter 3: Wiring Methods and Materials
Chapter 4: Equipment for General use
Chapter 5: Special Occupancies
Chapter 6: Special Equipment
Chapter 7: Special Conditions
Chapter 8: Communications Systems
Chapter 9: Tables - Conductor and Raceway Specifications

To start, for clarification I understand these practice questions are based on the 2014 edition of the NEC. Any corrections I am applying here are only based on those books, and not on newer editions of the NEC. Please like to keep this collected information to the top, hoping to help anyone else who was further confused by this sample test. I appreciated the test not only for its intended purpose, but also for the extra work I had to put in to figure out these corrections. It helped me navigate the code alot faster than just answering the questions I think. 34. Reference is Article 250.21(B)(2), not the one mentioned. 38. The article number referenced is correct, 680.7, its specifically 680.7(A) and the quoted article is not that article. Additoinally, the question was worded terribly, and does not mention that it talking about the length of cord. The way the question is worded, its asking the length of of the equipment, not its wiring. 40. Quoted article has nothing to do with the question and answer. The actual article reference is 312.8(1). 41. The quoted article was close(numbers mixed up), but not correct. The correct article is 250.34(A). 48. The quoted article is incorrect. The actual article reference is 210.23(A)(1). 50. The quoted article was close, but not exactly correct to provide the answer. Specifically, it is article 680.26(B)(7) Exc. No. 2. 51. Quoted article is completely correct, though there are two paragraphs to the article, and only the paragraph that doesn't explain the answer was quoted. 52. Quoted article is correct, though specifically the answer is in 240.21(B)(1). 56. The question should have specifically stated that it meant for multiple separately derived systems. Based on the question asked, the answer would be 8 AWG. Specifically for separately derived systems, yes it is 3/0 AWG. 57. The article quoted is close, but does not answer the question. The specific reference article is actually 250.53(G). 59. The word "not" was excluded from the question. It is an important difference to say "rated not less than" vs. "rated less than".

@@matthewellis3004 No. The current test is most likely depending on where you are located, this video is not. I reviewed each question and there were different answers for some in the 2017 or newer versions, while the answers they gave were correct based on the 2014 version.

Ok, so Answer 3 about Article 680.10 is coming from 2011 code and 2014 code book cycles. The information was revised in the 2017 and moved to article 680.11 Underground Wiring code cycle and the verbiage dose not reflect the 2011 or 2014 code cycles. in the 2020 code cycle it has been revised and new sections have been added.

The theory of this Practice Exam is well-founded. And some of the answers even match the questions. But not all of them. Some are completely unrelated. Nor can those taking this exam even verify whether the answers are correct. I feel as though everyone who saw this video is now dumber for having experienced this. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Where I am sure question 37 is used in most exams across the US, it is a terrible question. It is taken completely out of context and here is why that is a problem: 408.54 states "for the purposes of this section". 230.90(A) uses the language "Single pole circuit breakers grouped in accordance with 230.71(B) shall be considered as one protective device." Perhaps there needs to be more context to avoid confusion of where this rule applies.
