Nebuchadnezzar and the Triumph of Babylon over Elam (Second Dynasty of Isin)

In this video, we take a quick look at the most famous king of Babylon's Second Dynasty of Isin, Nebuchadnezzar I (NOT to be confused with Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon in the Bible). He helped to restore stability to Babylonia as well as obtain retribution for Elam's attack on Babylon a few decades before. Take a look at one of Mesopotamia's most underrated kings.

there's another story about Nebuchadnezzar from the bible. it goes like this. Nebuchadnezzar asked to be worshipped as a living god only three people refused to bow to him. as punishment, he sent them to be burned alive in a furnace. however instead of three there were four people in there one of them appeared to be made of light, plus the other three weren't burning. it turns out the fourth person was a angel sent by God to protect them. this story was parodied in a episode of Veggietales which now i'm thinking Mr. Nezzar might be inspired by this king. the lesson of both the episode and the story is when you think something is wrong or you know what you're doing is wrong, stand firm and do what's right.

2:39 Question of long standing for me: Is the “d” in Nebuchadnezzar pronounced or not? (It was silent in the narration, at the time stamp.). If not, why is it even there? But that just makes me think of another question: What’s with the 5, 6, and 7 syllable names? Was it just a temporary fad? I realize these things tend to come and go in cycles. When i was growing up in the 50s and 60s, one and two syllable names were the norm. Nowadays, not so much. But 5 syllables??!! Seems like if language was still very much evolving, simpler names like “Og” or “Magog” would have been more popular.

It's a shame that Elam was replaced by Persians. It was like the Egypt of the east. A single continuous culture that had existed since the dawn of civilization. It would have been cool if they had been the ones to create the Achaemenid Empire.

Clearly the Elamite and other older civilisation were blended into the Iranian tribes and played a significant prt in that new evolved civilisation and culture. Cyrus himself was married to an Elamite and there is plenty of evidence of a very diverse nobility and governmental classes in the Achaemenid period. It is also note worthy to say that Modern Iranian DNA shows a massive amount of traces of the people that the Iranians came to mix with.

There's an unknown or alternate ideal theory that the Malagasy peoples of Madagascar who migrated from around Borneo centuries ago are kin ,back many long years , to the Elamites ..which by extension ethnically looked like the natives of the jungles of Malaysia generally thru time . The Elamites were by certain evidence known as an exotic like dark complexioned race ..maybe a little like any early Nubians of Upper Egypt . Seems a fairly reasonable notion . An ancient smart exotic culture of today's SW Iran .

  • @joemeyers4131

    @joemeyers4131

Actually there are two thrusts of theories ..one , people did not just evolve where they are ,but developed from long migration from a cultural or kind of civilized zone like what is Mesopotamia .. Another interesting thing is if that many national ethnic groups got sparked on or begun from places where strategic ancient wars took place . Reason why Europeans have the Greek and Norse sagas and gods that each entity was merely human beings that took on certain great exploits . Orion the titan like deity a giant of the island of Chios near Greece was a certain Mesopotamuan and maybe Akkadian ruler powerful and ambitious. He went to the eastern Mediterranean to join forces with large armies of a war likely caused by intrigue or a hugely dIsruptive unjust murder of certain prominent leader-governors ( creating vaccuum ) that warped the course of developing history around 2200 BCE ..

This was bronze age dark ages. Extremely religious era. This king took name of nabu god of wisdom. As a manifestation of the son of god (lord marduk). Nebuchadnezzar was a living god in human form. He was also, (humanly speaking), a messiah...which means both an earthly king and a high priest in charge of the religion. Much of the politics of this era revolved around controlling the propaganda of the idols.

Your empire was amazing. I have studied a small fraction of your history. Your current politics is extremely complicated, and I certainly will not add my view. To be honest, I am simply not knowledgeable on the subject. Although, I will make a passing comment on Saddam Hussein, based upon your politics since his death. I watched the video of his hanging, and I admit, I'm divided on my perspective of him. One of the executioners asked him, "are you afraid to die"? He replied, I have been fighting against Jihadists my entire career...He said, no, I'm not afraid to die. Previously, I determined that if a strong man didn't run his own country, then it would fall to militias and Jihadists. It appears to be the case. I believe, you are right that Saddam most definitely needed to instill fear, as a means to sustain law and order. However, it is very possible he went mad, in the same manner as Nebuchadnezzar II. And destined his own destruction. As you know, Nebuchadnezzar was the most powerful king in the world. He had a dream that was interpreted by Daniel (who was in prison at the time), a Hebrew exiled to Babylon when Nebuchadnezzar sacked Jerusalem and the Temple of God. After hearing of his dream, the king eventually built a 90 cubic statue of himself, and demanded that the people bend down to worship it, upon the sound of certain musical instruments. It was his downfall. It's in the Bible. Please regard it as a book of history, because it is. God will not allow man to assume HIS place. This happened to the last native Egyptian Pharaoh also, who claimed he made the Nile and was all powerful. You are from an ancient people of the strongest empire on earth. I can't say if your country could ever be a Republic, such as my country, USA. It would be wonderful if it was, but I doubt it would ever happen. Your government is too reliant on its oil. They don't seem to see past it. Also, I heard that different sects of the Iraqi people do not accept history prior to Islam. I am assuming this point of view is from Jihadists. I can't wrap my head around it. The history of your country is like no other. You invented writing, mathematics, geometry, etc., and yet, the Iraqi people are denying their ancient history and achievements which began the entire civilization movement in the world! I am a Christian. Can you even imagine how many of us would love the opportunity to see ancient Assyria, Akkadia and Babylon for ourselves? Egypt claims to be the Cradle of Civilization, it is not true! Your country is and will always be. It is my hope that Iraq finally receives a strong ruler, who will eliminate the militias and Jihadists once and for all. NEOM in Saudi Arabia is aiming to be the next hub of the region (Dubai is done). You have so must more to offer than Saudi Arabia. You might want to google how many Christians there are in the world, then multiple that in dollars, euros, yen, etc., they would spend in your country to see all the places, events and things mentioned in the bible. Not to mention, all the jobs that tourism would bring to the Iraqi people. Just saying....

Shitti-Marduk was such a toady, if alive today he would be in the Trump Administration. Fascinating episode there is something more immediate about hearing events from contemporary sources. The mention of the River Ulai set off a memory that took time to resolve, there are wall carvings in the British Museum that relate the battle near the Ulai between Ashurbanipal & Teumann of Elam, some things never change. I find the Ancient Near East interesting & an area sadly overlooked but videos like this bring the period alive complimented with excellent narration.

Thanks so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it them. Yeah there were several encounters along the Ulai because it was along the way to Susa, so it was a good option for invaders from Mesopotamia. The most famous and well documented battle is the one that you described with Ashurbanipal. I'm bummed that I missed the special exhibition on him that the British Museum had last year...must have been amazing. I'll eventually do a video just on him because, bloodshed aside, he really is one of the most interesting personalities of ancient history. Anyway, thanks for stopping by...stay safe!

You thought it was a Later Sumerian Creation-Text it’s the same just, (To Be Continued), now everything is being built by Marduk or “He.” Literature of the East 67. The Sacred Books. A Later Sumerian Creation-Text The holy house, the house of gods, in the holy place had not yet been made; No reed had sprung up, no tree had been created. No brick had been laid, no building had been set up; No house had been erected, no city had been built; 5 No city had been made, no creature had been created. Nippur had not been made, E-kur had not been built; The Deep had not been created, Eridu had not been built; Of the holy house, the house of the gods, the habitation had not been made. 10 All lands were sea. At that *time* there was a movement in the sea; Then was Eridu made, and E-sagil was built, E-sagil, where the midst of the Deep the god Lugal-dul- azaga dwelleth; The city of Babylon was built, and E-sagil was finished. The gods, the Anunnaki, he created at one *time;* The holy city, the dwelling of their hearts’ desire, they proclaimed supreme. **Marduk** laid reed upon the face of the waters, He formed dust and poured it out beside the reed. That he might cause gods to dwell in the habitation of Their hearts’ desire, 20 He formed mankind. The goddess Aruru together with the god created the seed of mankind. The beast of the field and living creatures in the field he formed. Literature of the East 68. The Sacred Books. He created the Tigris and the Euphrates, and he set them in their place; Their names he declared in goodly fashion. 25 The grass, the rush of the marsh, the reed, and the forest he created, The green herb of the field he created, The lands, the marshes, and the swamps; The wild cow and her young, the wild calf, the ewe and her young, the lamb of the fold; Plantations and forest; 30 The he-goat and the mountain goat, him. The lord Marduk laid in a dam by the side of the sea, *He,* a swamp, he made a marsh, He brought into existence. Reeds he formed, trees he created; 35 he made their place. Hi, thanks for stopping by. The quotes for this video come from two sources, "Ancient Near East: Historical Sources in Translation" and Paul-Alain Beaulieu's "A History of Babylon." There's a link in the description, "Sources and Suggested Reading" that will take you there. Any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks!

Hi! Correct, Elam is the area of southwest Iran known as Khuzestan when Babylon is in central Iraq, not too far from Baghdad. As always, thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate it...stay safe!

Also though possibly..Ashur element might of traveled far linguistically to very early 'Germany' as to ancestral tribals already built into the language by alternate relationships . Just allow yourself an open mind too .

@@HistorywithCy you're the host but I offer you a suggestion.. Study these names for unrelated like connections thru time and anagrammatic transliterations and I'm guessing you may stumble on a lot of neat stuff . Use an unclosed mindset . Say give it a shot and don't give up tell you find some stuff . A hint is these names influenced earlier style languages outside the Middle East !

Don't say "BCE". It is a pointless term. Say BC or use Years Before The Present (YBP).

History with Cy I appreciate your reply. The British Museum, The Louvre, The Metropolitan Museum, The Smithsonian, the National Museum at Cairo, The National Museum in Tokyo, And Topkapi Palace, just to name a few, all use BC. Most Archeological journals use YBP or YA (years ago). BCE is often used in the class room but it still is clunky and derivative and obscures more than it illuminates. But, otherwise I love your channel. I hope someday it is safe to visit the ruins of the cities you covered.

Me too, I'd love to visit them. To be honest, it is much easier to say BC vs BCE. BC is what I used up until high school but at university we were basically taught that BCE is more appropriate because in theory it's supposed to be the world standard and neutral, plus most of the books and articles that are published now use it. I'm thinking of changing it back but want to research it more first. I've seen other history channels are mixed...some use BCE but I think more use BC. Anyway, thanks for stopping by, really appreciate it, stay safe!

History with Cy My dig against BCE is that it uses the birth of Jesus (allowing for the very real criticism that we don't actually know when that is) as the benchmark without actually acknowledging what we are using as the benchmark. maybe you can developed a future tourist business that takes groups to Sumerian landmarks. Enjoyed your vid on the ancient Cyrian kingdoms too.

Hi again, hope all is well. Sorry for the late response, would love to visit all of those areas, though don't know when it'll be safe enough to do so. By the way, check out the "COMMUNITY" tab where I've posted a survey on the whole BC/BCE issue. I'm actually learning a lot from what people are posting there about the whole issue...interesting stuff.
