Neat Video VS Topaz Video AI...FIGHT!

What’s better for noise reduction in video…Neat Video or Topaz VideoAI? I was curious, how different will the footage look? What’s more convenient to use and what looks better over all? I needed to know, and that’s why I made this video!

    1. I think I am getting old, because I found it very hard to see the improvements and differences you were talking about. Let's hope it was KZread 😃. Probably the usefulness of either is dictated by the ultimate delivery platform? 2. Topaz is now available as a plug-in for Davinci. But is so slow, it isn't at all convenient. OK if you are planning a holiday in the middle of your edit. Also, Davinci Studio noise reduction is pretty good in itself, and a lot more convenient. 3. Love the 1/40 second shutter speed idea. That was really worth knowing. Brilliant. Thanks

My wife heard me playing this vid and she was like "is that the guy from headspace meditation?" ; I was so confused. So I looked up a video with the guy, and sure enough, he sounds very similar haha

Neat video with a light reintroduction of film grain has been my go to for noise reduction. I'm not sure if grain would make it through the youtube compression? Or if it doesn't make it be a net positive? It seems like sometimes grain helps with banding you get from a lower bit depth. Whenever I've used topaz it was on footage that was shot on a potato and has to be included for some reason and I'm never really happy with the result.

Once applied to a clip, Neat seems to slow down editing/playback in Resolve even after you turn it off. I only apply it after editing is complete, just before output. Has anyone else experienced this?

This may help: To optimize the denoiser's settings go to Neat Video's menu Tools > Preferences… and then to the Performance tab. Run the optimize test and use those settings. Also, in my experience, changing any of the quality parameters from 'Normal' to 'High' slows the process down EXPONENTIALLY. I went from 3fps to 10fps, and I don't believe it's worth it.

I hope that horrendous colour noise in your knitted jumper was intentional. :) :D

It would also be interesting to compare the noise reduction offered by Davinci Resolve, since now you have the two programs.

KZread definitely smoothed things over. I'm using Neatvideo after having tried out Topaz and much prefer it. It's just a smoother workflow and I prefer the customizability and results. I have created noise profiles for my A7IV and ZV-E1 for various situations so that now it has become more or less a drag and drop effect. I'm only having a bit of trouble with reducing enough noise when filming night shots with extreme noise in the ZV-E1's Slog-3, but I'll tackle that next week. I also don't really want to have another subscription. Adobe is already more than enough.

I go for 1/100th for greenscreen because motion blur makes a big difference imo there. Maybe too if you're planning to rotoscope. BTW, risky shirt for compression with that red, blue/grey mix!

@Harv I did notice you're using Topaz Video AI Ver 4.2, are you aware of the milestone v5 release already this month? Will you be comparing it to Neat or have you already?

Pretty nice to test these both. I'm totally fine with 1st step throw everything through Topaz and edit next day. But,, ah 9:40, yeah it changes color. Sometimes pretty much. I think I'll start using Neat Video again more. Neat Video as a plugin in Adobe does make my software crash now and then. With Topaz less so. But sometimes Topaz leaves temporary files which in Windows can be difficult to delete. I believe they are fixing this issue. Topaz community is nice and active.

Mmmmm not really. Buying it gets you the current version and updates for a year. After that year you have to buy again (with a discount) to continue getting updates, but if you don't the version you bought does continue working.

Doesnt have a subscription model. You pay for the license. After a year you can buy upgrades but you dont have to.

Why do you you keep zooming in and out in your video? I hate this annoying trend youtubers are doing during editing.

Mainly because (unfortunately) most people watch KZread videos on phones these days so when showing a full screen capture it can be tricky to see what’s going on. So purely practical reasons 👍🏻
