NDV’s Groovy Thursdays - Groove # 53: Three Great Pat Torpey Grooves
Greetings everyone!
Happy New Year and welcome back to Groovy Thursdays and the first grooves of 2023!
We are starting the year out right with some fun rock-n-roll drumming. Three great grooves from the Mr. Big drummer Pat Torpey. Pat was a fantastic player. He left us to early after battling Parkinson's disease but left us a great gift. The gift of his drumming lives on with all of us and there is a lot to learn from. Pat could be very technical when he needed to be. But deep down he just rocked and rocked hard! There was a ton of energy in his playing and I love that kind of thing.
I picked three grooves to check out. The first is from the song "Take Cover". A nice linear pattern that also blends in a solid back beat. It is definitely good for working on coordination and pocket. The second groove is from the song "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy". A killer rock-n-roll groove. If you want to learn how to hit the snare drum right in a rock setting then this is the tune to learn from. The third groove comes from the song "Colorado Bulldog". A galloping double bass groove that will definitely work on your stamina.
Sit down at your kit, take a deep breath, and get your rock on to start 2023!

Pat torpey,he was a great rock drummer.
Saw NDV with Mr. Big last night in Nashville. Obviously it really sucks that Pat’s gone. However Nick nailed it, not surprisingly. Such a magical connection in that band. Billy and Paul… insane chemistry. Haven’t seen them since the Bump Ahead tour. Bummer that it’s ending. Nick, talk them out of it!!

I'm watching this 7 months later you've uploaded, Nick. I'm very happy you share this thing and you're playing now on tour with Mr. Big. Pat is a big inspiration for me. Not too many people know he played Speed Metal on the first Impellitteri's album, simply brilliant. God bless his memory. Thanks again for this Nick. ♥️

Pat is one of the all-time great rock drummers, and definitely one of my favorites. He also seemed like a super-nice guy. He even responded to a random e-mail that I sent him years ago, and was extremely gracious. Thanks so much for highlighting his great drumming in this video.

Yeah me to in the erly 90s (one of my first albums).
Its good to see how much work you have put into playing like Pat. I bet the boys really appreciate it! I think its really good how you are honnering his momory like the band want to, its very nice to see. You are more than just a man to keep a beat at the back of the band doing what you have done! We all know you are your own drummer, but for this tour this is your job and i have seen some Japan shows and it is sounding very good! Keep up the excellent work Nick, I might get to meet you on the uk leg of the tour. xx

Take Cover sounds a lot like the beginning of Spreading the Disease by Queensryche
Three of my favourite Mr. Big tunes. I had not realized that in Take Cover, the ride/bell was playing the same pattern as previously played on the bass tom.
