I’m transitioning out of the navy, I am the lucky rate (job) that can get sent to NDT school. It’s very hard nowadays to get sent there and I don’t think I will be by the time I get out. With that though, I go shadow in the lab all the time and try to learn as much as possible. I have tons of manuals and good references to study on. I’m also familiar with the processes and my welds are inspected by our guys as well. I’ve heard some places accredit for my time in the navy as a HT to NDT hours. Also hoping by the time I get out there’s a good school around me to learn, around Phoenix AZ

@@rob8680 hell yeah, only problem is you’re starting out at that apprentice level till you get your OJT hours. I actually just got reached out by a great school called warrior to inspector in AZ. By the end of their schooling you’ll be level II with their OJT hours provided by the school. They also have job placement opportunities so I’m super excited about that

Hey man, awesome video! i wish you made more…anyways, do you think this career is automation safe? I am looking to get into this career but concerned for the future of this industry.

Thanks for watching. I do believe the industry is safe for the most part. Ultrasonics has had automation for decades (immersion testing) and while automation is taking over a lot of the NDT methods it mostly just assists with probe placement and indexing. Evident scientific and Zetec/Eddyfi both have ADR (Assisted or Auto-Defect Recognition) software that are being added to their analysis software but even that will requires a knowledgeable inspector making the ultimate decision for part acceptance.

Indeed and all those other sites were saying NDT Techs make only 50-60k a year but PQNDT said that’s like entry level/traniee salary??

Pay ranges wildly throughout the country. Starting PT inspectors typically make the least ($18 - 25/hr) while the advanced methods pay the most $40 - 55/hr). Contractors will usually get paid a lot more, I've heard of people making $65/hr but they typically won't get the same benefits (401k, Health care) as working for a stable company and it's feast or famine.
