Video recordings taken from public sidewalks and passenger platforms at the historic Santa Fe Depot, metropolitan San Diego throughout the month of November, 2021 (after work / school when scheduling permitted).
New York Central
Business Open Observation:
* 4 "America", 800086 CTVX5. It was constructed in 1928 and once carried President John F. Kennedy. After the merger, it served Penn Central and then Conrail (as an office car). Private ownership funded a meticulous restoration by the Cleveland Terminal & Valley Railway and Midwest Railway Preservation Society, a 501(c)3, which offers robust locomotive and railcar services.
Amtrak Pacific Surfliner
Superliner-I (former)
* 34951 "Redwood Grove", originally 34051. This Superliner-I sustained damage secondary to a derailment in 1999 and was stored for several years until being repaired with funding provided by the California Department of Transportation and repainted into Surfliner colors.
* 34960 "Sequoia Grove", originally 34060, later renumbered to 31592 when designated as a cigarette "Smoking Permitted" coach. Sustained damage secondary to a derailment in 2004 and was stored for several years until being repaired with funds from the California Department of Transportation and repainted into Surfliner colors.
* 34967 "Sycamore Grove", originally 34067. Sustained moderate damage secondary to a faulty water heater in 2002 that necessitated removal from revenue service. This Superliner-I was stored by Amtrak for approximately six years, and eventually overhauled with funding provided by the California Department of Transportation and repainted into Surfliner colors. In 2016 it was sent to Beech Grove and repainted into a black, blue, and gold livery somewhat reminiscent of the California Car bi-levels but with a slightly different shade of blue, no broad diagonal gold stripes, black font car numbers instead of white, and no large "Amtrak California" branding along the sides that typically adorned the California Car bi-level fleet. A few years later 34967 was repainted again, back to a livery consistent with the Pacific Surfliner bi-level fleet (sans the large white font Superliner-inspired branding along the side).

Sebastian: Both of us prefer the 59 class locomotives being overhauled and repainted…. But our understanding is that NCTD had already committed contractually to the procurement of two additional SC-44 Charger locomotives (to replace 3001 and 3002). Given the increased performance specs and concurrent fuel savings, I understand why NCTD elected to standardize their fleet with Chargers. We will miss the F59PHI locomotives when they are gone. 👍🏽👍🏽

Sebastian: We agree. The good news is that NCTD has been very generous and made all five of their F40 class locomotives available to the railroad museum community for donation. I would expect something similar with the F59 class locomotives (assuming no problems with the F40 class locomotives being picked up in a timely capacity). 👍🏽👍🏽
