i'm not a Chinese myself but my siblings studied Mandarin for like 6 consecutive years at school and they all said how various tone and pronunciation used can give an entirely different meaning to a single word, or words that seemingly sound similar to it. Even to the extent one may potentially start a fight with someone else from misspelling certain words. So, think i know what you're talking about. ^^
