The old IBM ATMs were much more simple actually. I used to be responsible for daily cash loading and weekly servicing/cleaning on the ATM at my branch. It used a simple two dial system for reading the numbers of notes dispensed and a similar belt system with some photo sensors to count and measure the bills. The cartridges had a simple 2 way key system to differentiate denominations. I remember when these NCRs came in in the early 90's to replace the IBM stock.

The note thickness detector is labeled LVDT, Linear Variable Differential Transformer. I'm sure I've seen it used for position sensing in robotics.

That is pretty cool and exactly what I expected from reading the NCR manuals ! The actual note picker does look simple and the delivery of bills to the belts too! Checking the bills are genuine probably isnt too critical in this machine, after all the bills are being put in there by the bank hehe!

i think some atms check count the notes 6 times before it's dispensed, I also know since these machines were moved to being made in china vs the USA there has been lots of problems with the way the money gets delivered, as you can see it's quite a passage from the money area to the delivery zone remember when the robbers used to blow the machines up with LP gas to make access to the money...ah I say bring back the good old days

That still happens here in europe some times.

About 10 years ago one of the local banks had an old IBM ATM, I pleaded with the installers and the bank to buy it for research. They relented claiming security and Health and Safety due to it being apparently 2 tonnes. It was old and weird, had a chip module retrofitted for chip and pin and a tiny 3 inch monocrhome display. The installers claimed it was an AT based machine with 640k and a 1024k upgrade board and 30mb hard disk drive.

Clever guy, about 97% accurate. Spotted the Automotive fuel filter is being used as a vacuum reservoir. This unit does not have the dye pack feature, though.

Where would a dye pack go in an atm ?

We used to manufacture these in Dundee Scotland it’s name was called a business hours enclocure, only installed in shops retail areas places like that

wow atm tech advances quickly. that machine was watching everything in withdraw or deposit process. the design is organized nicely. an ATM outside your house could also collect and hold donations for you.

Oh I miss this machine, this is NCR 5877 the oldest machine that still operated until 2016 in Indonesia.

Yep, S1 bunch note dispensor, aria pick modules. That is an older version before it was USB. If Aussie50 was still with us, he'd of loved the S2 dispensor... He also would of been thrilled if he got ahold of the bigger models that incorporated an SDM or now the SDM2...

The main motor is 110 or 220 depending on the region.

It'd be fun seeing someone else get a dyepack go off on them... :P Certainly is a lot of mechanics for delivering cash, considering in this day and age, money is becoming more and more virtual as days go by... :P

It wouldn’t be the magnets not set it would be user error loading the cash in the wrong cartridge. Hence why there are lots of fluoro stickers with the denomination in the cart which I bet still didn't stop someone without a morning coffee under their belt making the mistake. The final check is to always go out the front and do a test transaction after loading the cash!

Whose ball bearings on the chefs were the belts are, and they fail that’s why the belts no longer stay on

one fault that does happen a fair bit is a note missing, so always count your cash at these machines

Leo (Huge fan) Love your work. You are exactly right. Although they have tried so many ways to assure customers get the correct amount, its ridiculous to say that there will never be a mistake. Not gonna say where I work *cough cough CE*, but I know these machines quite well, and will say, they DO MESS UP :) HOwever, I will say they have come a long way, at least out here in the US

28:08 ur right cassette low sensor. The Led is just a feed sensor. Fuck you nailed well. And the 5877 were some of the most robust models.

No they do not put dye packs in atm cassettes. That’s where the magnet is to tell when the cassette is low on cash

How in he hell does Wells Fargo load postage stamps in the atm? They come out of the cash slot.

They probably use a separate cassete specially made for that.

so they can plug a laptop into the ATM and check inventory. those ATM board parts look useful. OUCH, how much is gasoline/petrol in OZ? imagine what a year 2014 ATM would have,

Nothing. If anything did happen, you would have a dispenser fault due to the cassette type not matching what the network sees.

what you wish for is the atm's with the $50's loaded in the $20's area often done as inside jobs i know someone in the industry
