I gotta look into it I never Bloom finished that well! I know Stutsman did a good job bringing the program back up. But they have been on a nasty decline for a while now, would like to see them compete at a high level like that again.

In the jr. leagues, my very first match ever was against Rico Chiapparelli at 85lbs. At 10 and 11 yrs old he and his brother Lou were already 3 time champs. I didn't know shit but was quick as lightning, he didn't care he pinned my ass in the first period. It was just another day at the office for him. He was an amazing wrestler even as a child.

Rules were sht back then. Terrible out of bounds rule. Way too much focus on weight cutting / day before weigh ins. 3 period over time, no sudden death, criteria. Can't chose neutral. And of course, Dan Gable pressuring the refs all the time.

@@daytonasayswhat9333 well it wasn’t always like that. In some cases they just went with a Hawkeye regardless. For example, Lee Kemp vs Chuck Yagla. Yagla stalled basically the entire match, and barely took a shot, and when in it came to the end of overtime, they chose Yagla when Kemp was creating all the offense

Heff had wrestled a dual meet vs Krieger earlier in year and was ridden relentlessly by a brutal leg ride, could not get away and took tremendous punishment. He didn’t want to go underneath Krieger in NCAA Finals and gambled that he could score one takedown.

If you have eligibility and are enrolled at the school, you can compete in a sport of your choosing if you're good enough. If you went pro, you're ineligible.

The ref that was officiating the match may argue Kreiger was wrestling defensively. Kreiger wasn't aggressive, moving forward, but he was a defensive style of wrestler. Wait for opponent to make mistake or poor shot then capitalize/scramble. Steve Harmon, you had same opportunities to earn an appointment from NCAA to work as an official. You should have, I guess. The criteria were set up back then to reward OFFENSIVE wrestling. That's why 1st or most escapes were 5th in criteria, after takedowns(2), back points(3), and reversals (4). We all have opinions on the internet, back then the refs opinion was the only one that mattered!

neither iowa st guys were offensive, it was like 40-1 iowa to iowa st shots, should have been tons of stalling calls and pts for iowa, not to mention other legit takedowns that were robbed by terrible officiating

these refs were horrible, penrith took like 20 shots to 0 kelly, should have been couple of stall points easy...penrith wins 1st bout in regulation....around 18:22 hefernan clearly has a takedown, both men are in bounds, what is ref calling? hef had 1-2 other td's also, then about 2pts in stalling easy, and at least 2-3 fleeing mat calls, he should have won in regulation also....but on another note, didnt really see any setups for shots for iowa, just open shots, so gibbons game plan was no shots for iowa st, stall, and sprawl, tire them out and hope for the best....it worked this day with horrible officiating....still cant get over both men in bounds and ref calls hefernan and kreiger out...
