This is why my family was a (mostly) NBC family in the mid 80's. So many classic shows that we loved. This is also why Brandon Tartikoff is probably the absolutely best TV programmer/executive ever. That man is responsible for years and years (even beyond his time there) of NBC success.

1984 & 1985 was the ratings peak and height of NBC. With "The Golden Girls", "227", "Cosby Show", "Punky Brewster" just to name a few, NBC hit #1 in Network ratings. Brandon Tartikoff WAS King!

The lead singer for this rendition of "Let's All Be There" is Jake Holmes, the same guy who sung the CBS "Great Moments" campaign from 1982-83, and also the "Zack the Lego Maniac" jingle from 1988 (just to name a few).

The jingle is so damn catchy! NBC in the 80's on Thursday and Saturday nights. I remember watching The Cosby Show, Different World, Family Ties, Golden Girls, 227 and more. The funny thing is back in the day there were actually things to watch on Saturday nights.

Since 1985 this inspired Silvio Santos doing the vignette of your station in 1989, the SBT. In search of KZread look for "vignette SBT 1989".

This was the first time in almost a decade that NBC was out of last place. The last time NBC finished second was the 1974-75 season.

St. Elsewhere was a frequent Emmy winner..and Denzel Washington was by then a movie star. Two reasons right there to heavily tout the show!

I was so glad to be apart of this TV season, since I was born on the very week that NBC telecasted Super Bowl XX (20) on late January 1986, just 4 months before NBC's current peacock came to town.

In the 80's NBC could not be beat on any progamming. I just re-discovered "Cheers" again thanks to HDNet. There should be a cable channel that shows nothing but shows from the late 70's and 80's.

Its funny that "Let's all be there" was NBC's peak, but "Come Home 1986-1987" was the beginning of thier decline.

It is also interesting to note that the reason NBC did not pick up St Elsewhere for a seventh season was not due to raitings. It was a contract dispute with the production company, MTM.

Why was TV better back then? Where I lived cable wasn't avalible. We had about six chanels. Now I have Dish network with over 200 chanels and can't find anything to watch. The big 3 networks back in the day put out great programing. Why can't they do it now?

NBC hit Top Spot with amazing new hits like The Golden Girls and 227 back then at the Expense of CBS whose ratings went backwards with so many Flops thought the latter half of the 80's.

That's because CBS was showing shows traditionally caterting to older viewers. CBS should have jumped on the young band wagon. They had their hits, but they came out with "Tour of Duty", " Jake and the Fatman" "Newhart" " The Oldest Rookie", " Coming of Age" seriously CBS?! This was the 80s, the MTV era, and their demographic was 90 year old viewers!

@Digifan23 I'm with ya! Did you know that this era we're discussing came after the last time NBC did the same thing? Before Cosby, Cheers and Family Ties were good but they weren't shows that could anchor the whole network. They had crap like Supertrain and Manimal going for them. It was in '84 when Cosby appeared on Thursdays, alongside Knight Rider and and A-Team on weekends, that people stood up and took notice. Then the next year came Miami Vice and their prayers were essentially answered.

I remember watching every episode of The Cosby Show every Thursday @ 8:00 p.m. as a child. My mom would be corrowing my hair for school the next day when it would come on. We also recorded many original episodes on VHS.

Despite never scoring better than 49th in the ratings, St Elsewhere seems very prevalent in the affiliate promo. I guess this was a time when quality programing was appreciated.
