NBC Special Report: Ida causes massive power outages along Gulf Coast

    Everything will be rebuilt, but the problem is that they'll rebuild everything in exactly the same way and in a couple years they'll be rebuilding it all again. It's the definition of insanity; doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result. Here's a tip - put your power lines underground, like we do across most of the UK and Europe. Yes, there will always be power outages in a storm, but above-ground power like this means you have to spend billions rebuilding every time there's a storm, hundreds of thousands of homes are without power for weeks. In the UK very few people experience a power outage as a result of a storm, and those who do have power back within hours, not weeks. We experience flooding all over the UK, we still don't lose power for weeks. I can't believe this needs to be said, but put your power substations on higher ground with a brick wall around them. What kind of moronic planner thinks a substation beside a river is a good idea? Build your levees higher than the bare minimum you expect to see. Mandate brick building and phase out wood construction in areas prone to storms. None of this will be done of course, because too many idiots are running things in certain states.

    Dude. The baby boomers have been in charge since 1992 and the only thing those morons build are strip malls, cookie cutter houses and banks. Do not expect anything to change. These are not your father’s Americans. These people are pure unadulterated idiots.

    Tip you can’t run power lines underground because N.O is below sea level which means no digging and the more you build on top it sinks so your plan won’t work down there hint The dead are layed to rest above ground

    I heard nothing about hospital generators in basements. Where did you get that idea? Some years ago, flooding struck Houston's Medical Center. All but one hospital had emergency generators above ground: criminal decisions affecting a new building. The city's power was recovered quickly. Another problem: too many hospitals had power controls in basements. So they could not access that power. For weeks, giant generators parked in the streets kept hospitals marginally open while basements were cleared and power rewired to withstand future flooding.

    First, they could use their cars to charge their phones. Second, anyone that lives along the coast that doesn't have a wind-up power source, isn't very well prepared. You can get very small wind-up radios with USB ports for charging electronic devices VERY cheaply on Amazon. I live in tornado alley and have several wind-up lights and a wind-up NOAA radio with outlets for both USB and regular plugs. No, it won't run a toaster, but I can charge my phone pretty quickly.

    @@SirNerdly In covering storms such as Hurricanes/Tornadoes and Blizzards in the Winter you are correct. The MSM almost always focuses on the towns and cities that most viewers know instead of covering the town *where the storm did the most damage.* During Sandy, the MSM focused almost exclusively on the Famous areas of the NYC/New Jersey region ie Midtown Manhattan and the NJ Shore towns of Say Seaside Heights (hometown of the infamous hit TV show “Jersey Shore”)Instead the suburban NYC neighborhoods away from Manhattan such as Coney Island and Rockaway Beach, NY was the most devastated.

I lived down in Florida for 15 years and know how people along the coast think. In this case, my daughter-in-laws brother lives just east of Baton Rouge and decided to stay. Not because of money, not because he didn't have a car.... he just didn't WANT to leave. After Katrina blew through, why didn't they move the power lines underground into protective conduits to maintain power supplies to businesses and residental properties. Buildings should be made hurricane proofed over the 16 years as this type of storm is going to be repeated every year. Also, since mandatory evacuations are going to be standard for every hurricane now and going forward, the towns and cities should build hurricane proof safety shelters for those who decide to "ride out the hurricane"; these shelters may have to have emergency supplies for 3 months due to supply routes being shut down into the area.

  • @voteZDLR

    @voteZDLR

    2 жыл бұрын

    Why? It's expensive. 10 times more expensive, approximately. Beyond that, there are cons to it as well like if something DOES go wrong it takes longer to identify, diagnose and repair and underground line but the fact is they are probably the better option if money wasn't an object. But it is. They would love to do that sort of thing but can't afford it. Also, "this kind of storm will be every year" no this kind of storm hasn't happened since well before Katrina. As they said. Katrina was a water damaging storm, and we rebuilt since then to accomodate that. We were fine this time around, but weren't ready for the WIND this time around. 16 years later though. This isn't the new norm yet, but it is a historical one.

    Unfortunately hurricanes seem to serve as a grim reminder of how superficial many modern construction methods are. We need to go back to the drawing board and study the building techniques of the ancient structures that still stand to this very day… structures like the ancient Japanese wood temples, which were constructed without the use of any chintzy nails but instead relied solely on interlocking joinery from the base of the deeply dug foundation posts, to the stout wood frame, to the roof. In this day & age with all pur advances in technology, advanced industrial CNC milling machines, high strength eco-friendly composite materials… we should be more then capable of building reasonably affordable homes that are much stronger & more resilient to hurricanes & inclement weather conditions. Not to say that they would be bullet proof, but hardly any of the residential buildings we tack together with nail guns today, are built well enough to last more then a few decades without requiring a complete rebuild/ renovation & many cannot withstand 100+ mph winds for any duration of time without the real potential of coming apart like someone turned the fan on a house of cards.

    When are the insurance companies and the government going to say enough is enough? Pay these people for their property then the insurance companis sell it to the government and turn it into a natural habitat and border protection that goes inland at a safe distance from the craziness off the ocean and gulf.

    Unlike Katrina being fair, Ida got bigger and turned into a historic and infamous Hurricane very quickly. The NOLA Mayor said her city did not have enough time to prepare as they needed at least 4-5 days to declare a mass evacuation. The Hurricane Center only stated that IDA would be a “monster” storm around Thursday-Friday. With that said living in the Gulf Coast, I do agree that if possible residents during “Hurricane Season” should *always* be prepared to leave immediately at moment. Keep in mind also, that region is filled with a lot of people who are low income and even very poor. Not making excuses, I am just being honest.

    Then why you watching Sanborn? Tired of critics of the MSM like you commenting on NBC and other old school news media outlets when there are other outlets now to get info. Whether it’s Vice News for Progressives or the far right Newsmax or OAN. Just saying.

    The "new" levees weren't built any better than the Katrina ones. I was busy yesterday manually posting Alerts with official details on several social media platforms due to no EAS systems being required. I'm amazed that people were given 2 days' notice, they chose to stay & NOW they want help. EMS is right to refuse to risk their lives to save the naysayers & "optimistic" people. Noah had no mercy when the floods started & THEN the people believed him, too late. With today's technology & 2 days' warning, there is no excuse for people to stay & risk their kids lives due to their idiocy.

    What did you think was going to happen it's a hurricane whatever you have to say it's been going on for years everybody knew it was coming I understand that some people can't just get up and get out of their houses but why didn't somebody help them get out people choose to stay there like what they're going to do their house gets destroyed they can't do nothing about it yeah I live in Iowa it's easy for people to comment and say they should have got out cuz they've never been through that I never been through it but I've been through fires floods and earthquakes in California I've been there Orlando Florida I've lived in Arkansas an Arkansas I went through a tornado if anyone gets killed it's their own fault for staying there they didn't think things through a lot of people did get out but it's like who cares about life huh why didn't they help the people that couldn't get out why didn't the governor of that state help them people get out now you're putting rescuers in danger to go rescue these people it all boils down to the governor

    Okay.... That was kind incomprehensible. But no, people just don't have a choice in a lot of cases. To get out of this, thousands (or millions) of people have to travel sometimes hundreds of miles. And down here in the deep south, that ain't an option for many folks.
