For generations, listening to Casey Kasem's pop music show "American Top 40" was an adolescent rite of passage. Besides being a radio icon, he also was the former voice of NBC. Rehema Ellis takes a look back at his career.

Zoinks Scoob!! Rest in Peace Casey "Shaggy from Scooby Doo" Kasem!!
"I'm Casey Kasem, and the countdown continues."
You could not have met a nicer guy, I met Casey two-three times way back in the sixties when he was promoting bands at the Conejo Valley Rec Center in Thousand Oaks California. He was a people person, he would empower you to follow your dreams & listen to your heart, he always, always had that Casey Kasem smile on his face, a very bright light. God Bless you Casey, Thank you so much for all you gave us.

Lucky You! I would listen to his Top Forty Radio Show from 10:00 to 2:00 every Sunday Morning then The Companion Show America's Top Ten. If he had lived and still did the Show he could have done The Top Ten Acts to come out of Reality TV. So many Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Girls Aloud, One Direction & Little Mix (UK), amongst others.

As a long-time fan of Casey who was lucky enough to meet and stay in touch with him, I totally agree with what you said about how kind and down-to-earth he was. I met him back in 2006 when I got to go to his studio and listen to him record an episode of his show, and his staff members were so nice. One of the sweetest memories was before I left his studio, Casey gave me a hug and I told him how it made me smile. He kindly responded with, “Well, I’m going to make you smile twice”, and he gave me another hug. Thank you for sharing your story about how you met him, and I really appreciate how he’s one of the reasons why I love doing what I’m doing as a DJ because of what he always said at the end of his show. “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars”!
Casey Kasem was also the host of America's Top 10 on TV Syndication from 1980-1992 I use to watch it on KBMT-TV 12 after American Bandstand and KLFY-TV 10 after Eyewitness News @ 10:00 God Bless You Casey Kasem, R.I.P. Shaggy Rogers and until we see ya again, Thank You for encouraging us to Keep Our Feets on the Ground and to Keep Reaching for the Stars Please say hello to Dick Clark & Ed McMahon for me
Man I Loved American Top 40. It was much a part of my teenage years. I really miss Casey Kasem. Sorry he had such a rough end of his life.
I remember during middle school my dad would always play 70's on 7 XM while driving. I heard that man's voice almost everyday between songs. It almost feels like yesterday to me...
Did she say his voice NOW part of American history??? WRONG!!! It always was.......
Rip Casey kasem your legacy will never be forgotten
Now we all send you a long distance dedication wherever you are Casey!!
Casey Kasem RIP.
Shaggy what a voice , & the voice of NBC sound so distinctive but I wouldn't have guessed it was Casey Kasem ! I miss his voice , so familiar . RIP , still thinking of your wonderful work, :-)
I remember him on Sundays I listen to America top 40 of the 80s on my radio RIP to Casey kasem I like him in the Scooby-Doo cartoons as Shaggy Rogers
HOLY ZOINKS!!! Casey Kasem, always both Shaggy from Scooby-Doo and Robin from The Superfriends, forever the original master of American Top 40!!!
Kasey Kasem as a child growing up in New Zealand I would tune to listen to your top 40 hits, most of the hits we were so far behind in the music world at that time, I would take my dads radio into my room tune in and listen sometimes taping songs that were yet to hit our shores. Your voice was iconic as was your show thanks for the memories rip.

Casey also worked for Dick Clark when he hosted Shebang in LA on KTLA. Some of the Kids who danced on Bandstand did double duty including John "Famous" Hooks the first African American Dancer on The Show on American Bandstand from 1964-1973. If America's Top Ten existed now he could have done The Top Ten Boybands/Girlbands or even The Top Ten Musical Acts from Reality TV.

Both Casey and Dick Clark became life's oldest teenagers.Casey, even at some age 70 something, was the voice of age 17-20 years old Shaggy.Dick Clark was the world's oldest teenager to most that knew him.
We will miss Kasem!!
I remember hearing about this back in june 2014. apparently I didn't feel all that sad at all after hearing he passed away, but if I could travel back to the day I found out he died, I definitely would be very upset because not only did scooby doo define my childhood, but shaggy has also been my all time favorite scooby doo character since I was a little kid. I'll miss you very much casey. i'm very thankful to have the awesome childhood that you gave me.

I live in Canada and every Sunday Morning from 10:00 to 2:00 I would listen To The Show and on Saturdays I'd watch The Companion Show America's Top Ten which was great because I would get to see what was going on The R & B Chart and it bought Musical Genres to people who may have not listen to this Music. God Bless You Casey.

Eight years later & still miss him !!
There was never a day in my youth i did not hear that voice in my younger years it was through Saturday morning Cartoons then AT 40 at AT 10 later on.
Here's another fun fact. He attended Wayne State University in Detroit, MI his Hometown which was the Same Alma Mater that Diana Ross's Father Fred attended, and to think that for the next 40 Years he played many of her Hit Songs.
Thanks for posting-Incidentally,it was 47 years ago today that "AT40" premiered.
Life in general was a better time listening to his top Countdown Radio Show every week may he Rest In Peace
Kasem was also in many movies...one of which is DOOMDAY MACHINE 1972.
Another beautiful thing he did each year was pay Homage to Jackie Wilson during Xmas and in The UK he's still an Icon. Two Videos that paid hommage using The Music of "Reet Petite" and "I Get The Sweetest Feeling". It was one of the Audition Songs that Will Young sang who became the "First" Pop Idol in 2001.
Thank you for Entertain me in childhood
Matthew Lillard, the actor who portrayed Shaggy in most of the Scooby-Doo cartoons, was a perfect replacement for Casey Kasem, especially since he starred in two live-action Scooby-Doo movies.
Casey Kasem voiced over numerous NBC network promos for many years.
