NBC Nightly News 9/11/01 - Part 1 of 4
Recently, I recycled my old TiVo. It had been out of service since 2001. Before it was gone, I took a look at the programs from 2001 still stored there. Surprisingly, this Nightly News broadcast from September 11, 2001 was still there. Does my sharing of this broadcast, this piece of American history, break NBC's copyright? Perhaps it does. Perhaps NBC could be selling this piece of our lives back to us which would be their right as the people who paid the salaries of people involved in the reporting and for the cost of the equipment and facilities. Being a New Yorker who experienced the event close up though, my belief is that the event's coverage is part of our shared experience and deserves sharing. If asked, I will remove this content. Thank you.

Man… I was 8 when this all broke down… thank you for uploading this. I’m tutoring kids and a lot of them obviously didn’t live to see this day… I remember clearly and I remember the frantic emotion of my mother calling family who work in Manhattan in offices near WTC. Thankfully they’re fine, and my uncle helped in recovery efforts… and is now sick with respiratory problems cause of it. And living in chicago I remember the silence that fell on the city. I’ll never forget this day. “In the average man’s life, there are moments burned into his heart and to his brain. But no matter what happens to me, I will remember September 11th as long as I shall live.”
Historic broadcast - thanks for posting.
Tom Brokaw must rank up there as one of the best at news presenting
I was just starting college when this happened..still gives me chills
What has always bothered me the most about this day is the jumpers. I could never get over that, and I still, to this day, cringe and get an empty feeling in my stomach every time I see or hear about it. Everyone has their theories as to why they jumped, and what it was that forced them to jump, but I just don't think anyone knows for sure. I, personally, believe that they jumped because of the smoke. I believe that it got SO BAD that they simply couldn't breath. And eventually, I believe they knew they were going to die if they stayed there, and obviously there was no way out, so I truly believe that they made the decision to jump because they were so desperate for air, so desperate for that one last breath of fresh air, so they jumped, and they got that last breath of air. I believe this because I have asthma, and sometimes it has gotten very bad. At one point, it got so bad that for the first time in my life, I truly thought I was going to die. My breathing was SO shallow and tight that even lifting a hand was impossible because it took my breath away. I couldn't say a single word. It was so bad that I was actually praying that they would cut a hole in my chest and stick in a tube. Anything to help me breathe. In fact, there was a point where I was wishing that I would just lose consciousness and die. It was so bad that i didnt care. God, it was so awful. At least drowning or suffocating is quicker. The misery doesnt go on and on and on like it did for me. Anyway, my point is that I know _exactly_ how these people felt. And at the time I would have done ANYTHING just for one deep breath. ANYTHING. And deal with the consequences later. If someone had offered me one single deep breath...but then I would die...I would have taken it in a second. I really would have. And I believe that was what these people felt. If you think i am exaggerating or maybe being overdramatic, then idk. Try to hold your breath a lot longer than you really can. Try breathing through a tiny little straw, a coffee stirrer, for 5 minutes straight. You probably can't. But, imagine not having a choice in the matter? Those poor souls had a choice, and they made it. And frankly, I think they made the right choice. At least thry got that last breath and died instantly.
Thanks for the comment. I realize why you might want comments shut off, but I would rather have an open forum and let people vote down the comments that they find offensive. It feels wrong to me to limit free speech on such a topic even if some comments come off as offensive.
No political comments. No theories or guesses. Just a simple observation that this was a very sad day. My heart is still with the victims and their families...

I remember watching this on the news. It was all I watched that day and the weeks after. For at least the rest of the day, I kept watching the news to make sure I didn't hear my Uncle's name mentioned among those who died. Thankfully he survived. He's a New York Police Officer and he lost some of his friends in the towers. I hope America, and especially New York City never has to go through something like 9/11 ever again.
Dude was 2001 ballin with the TiVo
people always throw around the saying "do you remember where you were" for a historical event, but I'd say without question in my lifetime, more people remember this day more than any other
I was 23 then man where has the time gone was a awful tragedy I remember this repeatedly played all night they even closed are store early at the mall and told us to go home I still remember this day
Thanks so much for this piece of history, uncut and raw. I was 19 when this happened, time moves so fast!
It's amazing what ends up on KZread. Thanks for putting this up though. I was curious to see some more news media from September 11. I think it is important that we can view this kind of stuff.
I loved that theme music that NBC News used back then to open the show.... really fit the mood really well that day....
The Empire State Building almost looks like it’s crying looking at its fallen brothers
this is still very heart-breaking to watch. none of us will ever forget where we were and what we were doing on 9/11/01.
It was really toughing how people put aside their differences and stood together and helped one-another, even if it was only for a few weeks. It proves that the vast majority of people do care about their fellow human beings.

"put aside their differences" yeah sure, if you ignore the many hundreds of hate crimes that sikh men faced by American nationalists in the next 8 years.
Wow. I really haven't looked back at any news broadcasts from that awful day, so it really gives me the chills watching this again. A horrible, horrible day...
Just the beginning of the nightmare.

@@norsemanbushcrafting1621 Afghanistan war. I don't remember a time where we weren't fighting in that war until recently, I was just that young.
The worst day, as those of us who watched knew we couldn’t help, didn’t know who or what was responsible, wondered what was next, and watching our beloved fellow Americans die. Still makes me cry today. The only blessing in this was the unity we experienced as a country right after. Now we are so divided, and I pray it doesn’t take another event of this magnitude to make us realize we are stronger together, rather than divided.

RIP David Bloom who died in Iraq some time later from DVT.
That tivo is a throwback
Brokaw gave the news some class back then. When things like this happened, his voice was comforting…Can you imagine saying that today?
seeing that tivo screen gave me flashbacks
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I am a huge Brokaw fan, and sad when he retired. Just his voice...I dunno, kind of made a scary day in our history...I knew we were going to be alright.
Woah that tivo sound brought back some memories
RIP David Bloom
THANK YOU!! I have wanted to see this for awhile. Awesome! I love TiVo!
WOW. I totally remember watching this broadcast that night. I was in 11th grade in Pittsburgh, 80 miles from where flight 93 went down in PA. What a crazy day that was. Our school actually let us watch TV most of the day and didn't keep the news from us which I'm thankful for.
I was around 8 years old when this happened. This makes me so emotional
I want to thank you for uploading this video.
And the TiVo ? This is elite
Conspiracy theories aside, this is a hard time for Americans. My respect goes to the families of the victims, both injured or dead.

As a holder of a B.A. in History, I have to ask this: how would historians assess and discuss the impacts and causes of 9/11? Personally, I think that it would take generations before historians can finally come up with a complete, accurate, detailed, and organized argument that fully sums up this tragic day in our history.

Just graduated with a B.A. in history & political science. Wrote my thesis on September 11th. The historical AND political implications were huge for a number of reasons that won’t fit in KZread’s character limit. The U.S. foreign policy changed drastically, and politically the attacks are still used to justify the restriction of civil liberties
Thank you for this upload.
thank you for preserving this.
I remember when time magazine had a whole magazine about 9/11.
It's easy to forget how horrifying this day was. I can't imagine the fear in the people at any of those scenes.
I was in brooklyn when this happened , horrible day will remember forever. RIP to all the people
Thanks for uploading.
Tom Brokaw was hosting the newscast from atop the roof of NBC's studio building in Rockefeller Center. The camera behind Brokaw was looking south towards the site of the World Trace Center. Just behind Brokaw is the Empire State Building.
This is still heartbreaking to watch.....Though years ago, there are only 2 things that make me want to bawl my eyes out. 1. Watching my mom die in the CICU as a result of drug use when I was 14(23 now) 2. This day.
I remember that "Attack on America" headline so vividly. That was one fucked up, crazy day
love the description, wel will never forget this day. :'(
Wild. I was in 7th grade. Watching this now as an adult is such a surreal feeling. To think all that followed this; Afghanistan, Iraq, COVID. We had no idea what we were getting into.
Wow. I didn't even know TiVo existed in 2001.
15 years after that horrible and mortal day
My dad was in the national guard....we live in Albany...I thought he was going to war he broke out his uniform and everything...it's still scary after 9 years...R.I.P. all who lost their lives on 9/11/01.
The world was never the same after this. It feels like it was yesterday. They will never destroy our nation; no matter what they do. This was, is, and if will continue to be the greatest nation on earth.

It's a valuable piece of history. Note that Tom Brokaw anchored from the roof of the RCA Building in Rockefeller Center, with lower Manhattan behind him. Almost ten hours after the first tower was hit (this broadcast began at 6:30 P.M. EDT),. you can still see smoke smoldering from the World Trade Center site.
Don't you remember the big news from that summer? Bush receiving the memo in August titled "Bin Laden determined to strike in America". There was so much chatter going on that summer; I think when it finally happened, it wasn't too difficult to put two and two together that it had all the earmarks of Bin Laden and Al Qaeda
I remember I watched this live in my first period class my senior year. Every one says from my parent's generation that they always remember where they were when Kennedy was killed. I will never forget watching that it was surreal.
No, I had a Series 1 TiVo that I had hacked to allow me to have access to the file system. It was just on local New York City cable tv.
Damn.. They initially thought 20,000 could be dead..

Dylan Olson Well, there could have *_easily_* been 20k dead. If Flight 77 had hit virtually any other part of the Pentagon, then there would have been *_AT LEAST_* 1,000 deaths there. Most likely closer to 2,000. Also, if American Airlines Flight 11 had struck the North Tower 20 minutes later and/or just a few floors lower, there would have been at least another 2,000 killed then. And if 175 had struck the South Tower within 5 to 10 minutes after flight 11 did (after 9:00am) then there would've been another 1,000-2,000 deaths in that tower alone.

I remember watching this news broadcast vividly.
We find ourselves on the anniversary once again. The importance of this event in shaping the world seems more evident with every year that passes.
Word. It's also hilarious these people accuse the US government of being incompetent, yet also somehow think it's possible that same government could be the architect of one of the greatest consipiracies of all time.
America never the same after this day. We now spend billions preventing this from ever happening again, and so far, it seems to be working. Credit to American Intelligence!

As a Canadian, living on the border, I can only give my condolences , even 10 years later. What a brutal event! What a mess! Planes landed in MY city, because, we found out later, they would have been shot down, had they tried to go to their destinations. I might want to suggest, a thank you to a whole host of Canadian towns, that accepted questionable planes. Hint,...hint....

Nice video description
I have this on VCR I should get it on a disc thanks for putting this together good job nope it does not change because of copyright it is public knowledge, only if you change any part of it
omg I remember watching this like it was yesterday...I have chills
Thanks 4 update
Nah, it was only 8:46. The work day generally starts at 9. If they struck those towers an hour later, fatalities would have been unthinkably higher.
Is it me or @ 2:12 in the distance where the smoke is, their are flashes of light?
The leader of the Northern Alliance, a group that was fighting to overthrow the Taliban, had been assassinated the day before. The explosion was apparently a retaliatory attack the Northern Alliance made against the Taliban.
I had know about these attacks since 1997.

Yeah, they were unsure how many people were in the buildings by the time the planes hit... Honestly lucky they hit at 9am and not noon... Could have been ALOT more people if they hit when the buildings were completely full of workers.
I also live in wash d.c but I lived in south korea bacl then. I just cant believe this happened, it brings me to tears
TV ushers in the Internet, welcoming everybody to the anchor's chair.
I was in 1st grade during this attack. Our teacher left the classroom for a while and a boy came in. He told us that someone had crashed a plane into the towers. School was closed for the next three days because some of us had relatives who died.
I remember this video!!! I was 9 years old
I was in brooklyn when this happened , horrible day will remember forever. RIP to all the people Paul from Poland
that day just wouldn't end...
I was 26 and had seen enough footage by the time this aired. I needed to watch something different and tuned into MTV which to my shock was playing nonstop music videos. Since they only 2 other times have I caught them playing video again. But thats another story.
I recorded this. I haven't seen the tape in so long since I put it on a VCR tape. I didn't want to overuse it and destroy the tape.
I lived in ny back then and remember seeing this smoke from my balcony in the Bronx
I didn't have cable at this time so all we had was NBC
I was a Sophomore in College then and was working an almost-fulltime job. It was an ordinary day for me. I had no idea that my life was about to change forever on that day.
it made me think that the world would end, but it has been reborn many times. I am used to it anyway.
thank you for posting this do you know where i can find the full unedited NBC news coverage of the actual events? ms-nbc played it all yesterday and i freaking missed it :(
Over 20 years later people are still dying from 9/11 related illnesses. Collateral damage to say the least 😢😞
Why does this make me cry every time I see it? I'm not even trying, it just comes out as they talk about it... And it happens every time... Why?
It's been 19 years ago and I still remember my twin sister came in to my bedroom and woke me up to tell me the US was just attacked and I went down stairs and watched the world trade center get struck by hijackers and watched it collapse. WE WILL NOT FORGET!!!
@thedarthflagger There weren't any commercial aired during that broadcast. I took that straight from the hard drive.
wow the old tivo that skips commercials completely!
Frame 6:41, where is that flipped car located? Near what building?
I remember watching this as a kid I did not fully understand what was going on but I knew it was terrifying
R.I.P. David bloom.
20,000 usually working in World Trade Center and only 3,000 dead, that's likely due to the fact that September 11 was the first day of school and many parents went to drop off their kids
i was in the south tower
Watch the Howard Stern broadcast on 9/11 and hear them tell you how they knew who he was. How do people forget about things so easily?
Incredible archival footage. I'll bet you've had one or two new units since you replaced this as you say, but I'll bet they've recorded nothing more important.
@MikeTupperTheKiller Look for the related videos usually somewhere near the top of the comments. KZread isn't letting me post the actual links in this comment reply unfortunately, but all the parts are here.
