The auspicious time when Hindus pray to Maa Durga and seek her blessings is just around the corner. After Pitru Paksha Shradh ending on October 14, comes the nine-day festival of Navratri starting on October 15 this year, as per the Hindu calendar. Navratri, also called Shardiya Navratri, is a nine-day-long Hindu festival during which nine different forms of Maa Durga are worshipped with great respect and enthusiasm by devotees across the world. It is believed that during these nine days, Goddess Durga descends on Earth and so this period is considered highly auspicious. During Navratri, devotees across the world keep fasts, meditate, pray to Goddess Durga and seek her blessings, set up pandals for Durga Pooja, and organize garba nights. People come together to pray to the Goddess and ultimately celebrate the victory of good over evil.

The word Navratri is made up of two words-- 'Nav' meaning nine and 'Ratri' meaning nights. And so, Navratri literally means nine nights. Each of the nine days of Navratri celebrates a different avatars of Maa Durga, namely: Shailaputri on Day 1, Brahmacharini on Day 2, Chandraghanta on Day 3, Kushmanda on Day 4, Skandamata on Day 5, Katyayani on Day 6, Kalaratri on Day 7, Mahagauri on Day 8, and Siddhidatri on Day 9. All the nine avatars of Goddess Durga represent divine feminine energy. During the auspicious time of Navratri, devotees seek Maa Durga's blessing to fulfill their desires, seek protection and strength, and grow on their spiritual path in life.
