Definition of true bearing and relative bearing. Method to convert true bearing into the relative bearing and vice versa.
** CORRECTION @ 6.43 onward, relative bearing = -150 or 210 **

A small trick I would like to share, just remember “SHIRT”. Ship’s head (SHI)+ Relative bearing (R) = True bearing (T)

@@viditrawat1074 Not only helpful it's the right way! ships head in true degrees + relative bearing = true bearing. N.B.: You may have to subtract 360...For example, Ship heading 250 true + rel bearing of 315 degrees = 565 degrees - 360 = true bearing of 205 degrees. that can now be plotted.

I thinks there's a little mistake there in the end.. True Bearing= 100 deg. T/Co= 250. That makes the relative bearing -150 plus 360 to make it positive which makes 210 deg. but still a very good lesson, cheers!

Relative bearings are measured clock-wise or anti-clockwise and up to 180 degrees only, in this case it is -150 or 150 degrees R to the port.

I agree with that case... It supposed to -150 is the value of Relative Bearing... But anyway, we have learned for this video... Thanks and credit to the owner...

Thanks for the appreciation. The last example has some typo error which was corrected with KZread annotation, which may not show on all devices. Nevertheless, correct relative bearing is 210 instead 200 .

Hello sailorstube, i'd like to tell you that you are doing a great job and i strongly appreciate your efforts. I have a small doubt and would be grateful if you clear it. My question to you is :- How can i find true north on a ship and also the true direction of my ship's head?

You can find true north with the help of correct gyro compass. Alternatively you can establish north direction with the help of Polaris or Pole star , which approximately ( with in a degree) lies in north direction. So ships true direction is the clock wise angle from north direction to the ship heading or fore and aft line of ship .

3:50 What do you call on this part? 2:15 The relative bearing in this part is wrong right? It should start from the ship's head in a clockwise direction to the line of sight of an object as what you have said.

Im also confused. Additional question. If the object is 45 degree on your portside. Is it not a relative bearing 45 degree?
