Navigating A World Full of Barriers
Today I finally got to meet some buddies for a drink on a patio! I wanted to take you through all the things I need to think about before leaving the house to do said activity and how I navigate a world full of barriers.

You know it! 🥰🙏💗⚘
I'm so glad you have great, considerate friends. They make a world of difference!
Things that I take for granted.
I was recently at an accessible craft brewery, and they had one general public washroom for everyone. My favorite thing about it was the sign which had every possible kind of stick person, and underneath it said "whatever - just wash your hands."

Yup seen that as well and love it
Wow ur absolutely amazing , funny, witty , businesses need to think more about their layout so as everyone from all walks of life can access something as basic as a washroom , ur an inspiration xx
I wish I could make friends. I’m tired of being alone with my wheelchair. You look like a happy person. Thanks for sharing and opening up about your life.
You made me feel better about my situation. Everytime I go out it’s a whole production with tanks and oxygen etc. Gone are the days of grab your keys and go. I appreciate you for allowing us in your world. Thank you ❤️
your videos are always so... comforting
You gentlemen are great.👍😁
I never thought about the bathroom problem when going to smaller places. Thanks for the education. I'm so happy things are starting to open up!
I go to coffees with my 90 yo dad, so I know all the gas station with nice bathrooms, also coffees with accessible toilets, also good chairs. Some have benches or chairs that food, that could be so dangerous for my dad. So I totally get you
Spencer: *Uploads a new video* Me: *Drops everything to watch asap*
If I had your number, I probably would call you too often...lol. Great video!
You look very handsome Spencer. Good Evening from the U.S 😊👍
Thank you for giving us this glimpse of another world. I can say that sometimes, I have to know the restroom situation. Every little thing we become aware of helps us become more mindful of those around us.
You are awesome. Love watching your videos. Indeed, the logistics can be daunting for people with disabilities. My best advice, always take along a change of clothes, just in case. 💕
Thank you for sharing this insight on the barriers you face, we love you Spencer!!
I just love you. Love your spirit.
Very real problems people with disabilities have to think of. Sometimes all the planning takes away all the energy to leave the house.
Hello Spencer! My name is Yvonne and I write to u from Orlando, FL. I just discovered your channel and I wanted to say that u r an amazing human being. I’ve been watching your videos since yesterday Saturday 06/26/21 and I haven’t stopped since. I love how u view life and it makes me realized that my ongoing depression and anxiety is “small change”. I am looking forward to your next/new video. I’m sure it will be amazing! We are not in lockdown any longer in FL and as long as we are vaccinated, we are not required to wear the mask. I got my Pfizer vaccination in March and the second shot in April. Take care and stay safe...🏳️🌈
This makes me CRAZY! C’mon, Canada, get with it. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease 33 years ago, so I sort of understand your frustration. When I need to go, I need to be in a bathroom ASAP. I have a card given by the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America that gives me access to employees bathrooms if public bathrooms aren’t available. I just show it to the store manager and it gets me in. Its 2021…bathroom accessibility should not be an issue! Love you, Spencer! We’ll be BBFL (bathroom buddies for life). 🚽
Spencer!!! You have been such an inspiration to me and I love you so much! On Halloween of 2019 I was diagnosed with MS, and in that time I’ve gone from being a completely abled person to using a rollator around 3/4 of the time, depending on my fatigue and pain levels. It’s been a rough go of it, especially with the pandemic hitting only a few months after my dx, but your videos on here and TikTok have been one of the things helping me to stay positive throughout all of this! Lots of love and hugs!!! (PS, I’m also recently out as bi! Happy Pride!!! 🏳️🌈❤️🏳️🌈❤️🏳️🌈)

Happy Pride, fellow Bi 💕💙💜 I've been coming out since the 1980's, but only to ppl who were not Bi. It didn't go well! More recently I came out one more time, this time finding my bisexual community. Much better. May all go smoothly for you.
Ryan rocking the Lake of the Woods, freezer vest! Oh man, as a Manitoban, I miss that brewery and can't wait to visit again when lockdowns loosen up!
Hi,spencer.happy pride

I totally feel you.i have to consider if certain enviromental factors will trigger my asthma. Also,in really noisy situations,i cannot hear.im basically deaf.so,if im going out to eat with hubby and his parents,i have to check the menu, and let him know what to order me,if i cant hear.
Hiii your awesome!!!
Also,at least in chicago, not all cta el train stops are accessible.meaning,no elevator.sucks for walkers, wheelchairs, strollers, heavy shopping carts.

You inspire me a lot Spencer!
Brilliant video! :000
Honestly, the bathroom thoughts that go in your head when you leave is the same thing that goes through my head. I’m not disabled, but I am transgender and struggle with pretty anxiety. (edit: I meant pretty bad anxiety not pretty anxiety😂)
Having dealt with people in wheelchairs for nearly 60 years (portions of which included myself) I am massively familiar with your situation in trying to get around. One thing I will say, however is that clearly Toronto knows how to deal with wheelchair accessible sidewalks and public transportation! When we would take my sister around in her wheelchair, most curbs still had a 4 to 6 inch straight drop. To deal with this we had to tip her chair back, carefully lower the rear wheels of her chair to the street, lower the front wheels back to street level, cross the street, tip her chair back again, maneuver the front wheels over the curb, carefully lift the rear portion of her chair to sidewalk level and then stop to rearrange her from all the jostling her bumpy ride had caused and head down the sidewalk for another block and perform the whole ridiculous circus all over again. Most of the time we gave up and stayed on the street, where people would drive past us and yell at us for blocking traffic.
Not new to being disabled, but new to having to navigate the TTC in a chair and middle of May 2022 was my first time doing so on my own (with my service dog) talk about not being as accessible as I had originally thought it to be. I'd planned my medical trip for over a week trying to find the best route to my appointment. Yet the day came and the two good routes where not a option so ended up taking another and sadly the barriers made me glad I'd added an hour 6o my travel time because I ended up being 5 min late to my appointment because of three elevators being out of service and having to find a attendant to help navigate to a accessible location so I could get on with my trip (what a minor nightmare). Sadly it seems transit is better in the core then it is further out you go from the core. The west end and Scarborough is very inaccessible I'm starting to find or at least it is when I compare to how I use to access things when I lived near the core. Love how you mentioned having to know your bathroom stops n the like, thats another thing that I also found frustrating because I knew x places had accessible wcs but two of them where actually out of order so that was its own frustrating experience. I'm not sure how you do it, but I find most food trucks and stalls are not accessible to order from or even pay once you have ordered (what do you do if you do on occasion eat from such?). Can't wait for pride but semi worried on its actual accessibility since church Street hasn't had a good resurface in some time and it was looking very potty last I saw it.
Dude! You have trains that travel the streets! Tell me more.
You should move to Seattle! very accessible and lgbtq friendly! Also... I’d be your friend!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I never thought of barriers before for people with wheelchairs, but then life hit me with a curveball as it does, and now for the last year and a bit I have had to start using a wheelchair and wow, there are so many barriers, places I used to go without thought now is not possible because of steps. So yes I see what Spencer is saying, there are so many barriers out there for people with disabilities, terrible really.
SO then when you go to a place without a bathroom that is accessible, do you complain or say anything to the owners/operators. It's really disheartening that so many places in Toronto are still not accessible, esp in this day and age. Thank you for showing the public transit because when the bus pulled up i was unsure how you got on but seeing the ramp when you got off made sense.
Another great video! Every single building should have access. It should be a building code violation if it doesn't. I guess I will never understand society.
Ugh the public washrooms inaccessibility in the city bugs the hell out of me hell a good majority of the stores downtown still haven’t been retrofitted with ramps there is a Starbucks on queen west that has a entrance with a step at the front and ramp at the side and they had the freaking door locked to the side entrance so I was like that’s great that you have a accessible washroom but it stops being accessible when you keep the door locked damn it . Sooo yeah before lockdown I did not get to pee or get my chocolate mint frappe thing the last time I got to go out with friends . A lot of Scarborough where I am are slightly newer buildings so it’s oddly more accessible out here but still not perfect lots of the ramped sidewalks are too steep and will tip a power chair if you go down them too slow or too fast there’s no winning
Thanks for sharing, Spencer. You're a good soul
Happy pride 🏳️🌈
I am shocked that accessible toilets are not required by law like they are in the uk. Come on 🇨🇦, step up already!
Could you bring gloves to walk to the washroom?
Oy. So difficult.
Do you use gloves to get around?
Serious question, do you ever ask your friends to change plans to go to places that are more accessible? I had to start using a rollator during the pandemic and now that people are meeting up I don’t know if it rude to ask them to hang out with me in places or know have accessible washrooms, are near accessible subway stations etc. I also live in Toronto and have started to make a list of places that are accessible to me.

Do you / did you ever worry that your disability might make finding a loving life partner more difficult? It's honestly my biggest fear, even though none of my disabilities are immediately visible.
