If you want your ship shooting on 1 particular ship (4:19 , the 6th rate would be better cuz closer) instead of another, turn off auto-shooting and aim at the ship by pressing alt+rightclick (fire) so you can focus fire. Its kinda compromise between manual and random shots.

@@FaramirsRangers I don't know what you mean? It's not a tactic it's a technique. The tactic of shooting down the masts is fine. I meant instead of shooting at the 5th rate it would be better to shoot at the 6th rate because it's closer and so you can shoot its masts down (4:19) but because you use auto aim in this case, your ship always shoots at the first ship coming into your field of fire. But by using alt+rightclick and auto-aim off you can shoose which ship your ship should fire at without using the broadside-button.

I am new to Total War games. The AI shooting accuracy for your vessel was very strong. I thought the player would have to operate the broadsides manually. Cheers!

I played 4 naval battles and didnt like it. Been playing since it came out and had no idea you could capture ships or keep any of the captured ships. So thanks for this.

I suck at this - trust me.. But I've been practicing a bit. And I pulled ot off with a sloop against two sixth rates. Can't believe it 😂

Okay this is extremely helpful. The damn ship to ship combat in this game is so hard to remember, at least for my tiny fish brain anyway. Haha. Anyway, I was actually looking for a sorta "how to" on how to capture enemy ships. I'm currently playing as the U.S in the story campaign, and I don't exactly have he best fleet. So any ships I can get would be epic. What I took away from this is, use chain shot. And then board em! Which makes sense tbh. Very informative and useful video my guy! :)

Your so welcome. Just remember sometimes you don't even need to board them you can just switch to grape shot after they have been demasted. Then it's just a waiting game. Thank you so much for your support

@@FaramirsRangers unfortunately I don't really have much of anywhere or anyone to share this with, since this game was... Ahem, probably the most hated and or disliked total war game ever... But yeah, the video was very helpful. And i did manage to capture that ship! :D Also i finished the campaign! But it happened while a turn was ending so that was kinda annoying. Apparently only 18.something percent people finish that campaign. Do people just not like the campaign or what?

2024 i can confirm this works. I used it to take down a pirate galleon that was threatening my trade routes in the west indies as britain. And with a less powerfull ship as well. After taking down the masts it was defenseless against my guns and quickly surrendered. I then took it for myself, and used it for a long time afterward. I will admit i do play on low difficulty so maby this will be more difficult on higher levels.

That definitely works. You can even defeat a full stack of 20 heavy ships with 1 Brig zig-zagging on chain shot, but omg, it gets so tedious. Especially if you need to do this 20 times over and over in one campaign. Naval battles are the main reason I stopped playing Empire. All other problems I don't mind too much, or can be modded, but naval battles, they're so much pain. (and of course there's no way to autoresolve them - the way Empire autoresolve works, you might just as well surrender).

Well I will say fighting in this style helps you get your micro up to much faster level much in the same way people use mulitplayer grassy flat battles.

@@irgendeinname9256 Some mods nerf chainshot range, then it doesn't work at all. Or nerf chainshot accuracy, then it kinda works, but it would take whole day per battle so it's no longer worth it. I don't remember if Darthmod did that too.

Tomasz Węgrzanowski yeah correct darthmod does nerf it and darthmod just becomes a smash up derby on the sea

I did that in reverse with france. I declared war on england on turn 1, the portuguese and netherlands joined them. I captured the two english fleets and the dutch fleet on turn 1 then the two portuguese fleets on turn 2. I kept all the fifth rates and sold the other ships. Put every ennemy port on blockade and used the fifth rates to capture 90% of the trade nodes.

This was so relaxing back then

I was having a difficult time with that, also i am totally new to the whole TW Series of Games. But i am liking it very much, one other thing i am gonna struggle on. Rom3 Glad it helps. Thing to remember is with all the Total war games is the more times you play the easier it gets. You start learning the AI tendencies and helps you make your choices.

Do you have wisdom to share regarding proper naval actions of large fleets? I have long supported the chain shot tactic when outnumbered or otherwise overmatched with only a small fleet of your own, but with large fleets this becomes unfeasible.

It is much harder to micro more than 6 ships for me but not impossible. Some tactics I currently use especially against bomb catch and rocket ship fleets is to spread out to see which ship the fleet targets then all other ships bee line for the rocket ship with solid shot until it is exploded. Then back to normal tactics in the vid. I always fall back to this tactic as my primary.

What if the wind direction is the opposite, and they keep taking down their sails

I really need to practice naval battles more.

I honestly SUCK at naval battles. I barely beat the AI and PvP was a complete disaster. So this really helps.

works early game but vs 5x 5th rates and 3 brigs it took me 2 hours to get that the enemy boats will just catch up to you and make your boat esacpe

still works late game buy you will need more 5th rates to counter rocket ships. I also use a tactic adding in galleys with the 5th rates vs rocket and bomb catches.

Is there a way to make all Naval Auto-manage by the computer? I never like playing naval on ETW or NTW, but I especially hated how in Grand Campaign, I need to constantly look at it.

The only way I know of is if you auto resolve the battles. This is a risk. Some people avoid using navies and stay to land but this will have an effect on your economy. Truth be told Naval warfare in this game is actually very important to your economy early game. Late game you can live through the blockades because of your land holdings.

Do you have the same luck with this in Darthmod? I feel like I'm the only one who ever has their sails down when doing this. However I've only tried it on darthmod and I know Darth messed with the ship range. I don't know if that's campaign map only though.

No unfortunately it doesn’t work in darthmod. I find darthmod mod naval an absolute mess sad to say. It is one of the worst things about that mod. Definitely stole any kind of fun out of it.

So as Britain you can get galleons by capturing them from either Pirates, Spainish, or New Spain. That would be the only way for GB to aquire them. First Rate and Heavy 1st Rates can be recruited later in the campaign after research is completed to enable building them. Hope that helps. GLHF on the campaign.

What difficulty level is this? Very easy? They barely care to shoot you. I've been trying this play on my own, but the enemy vesel simply turns board at my ship and shoots me before I can reach them with chain shot.

Have you any tips for trade ships vs any military ? Sick of having 3 stacks in a trade point and a couple of sloops and 6th dates coming along and ruining me to bankruptcy

I usually keep a pair of 5th rates to protect my trade nodes.

11:34 I tried this, and my ship surrendered all of a sudden. I was (or thought to be) certain to be in his blind spot 🤔

I loved Empire Total War but never played it enough because I never learned how to do naval battles.

Yes you actually can do a formation on the command window. I personally don’t like it but I’m a control freak lol

I literally JUST hit approx 3k hours in this game and I still struggle with some aspects of naval warfare. Just now finally learning a few new things that are super necessary. Gave me some good new info here and a good strat. What difficulty is this on though? Thanks!!

It does take practice. Try to save then go back and try the same battle again. If their fleet is firing on you try to sail more distance between you before you swing about to fire. Also practice using the manual firing to over range your shots at them (only works with chain shot). This also takes practice but remember to lead your shots if they are sailing towards you. I will have another video coming out shortly on this.

Wow. Impressive. Would be difficult to use with many ships, however.

It does take some practice I will tell you. I suggest saving game before fighting then reload until you get better. Remember these facts the ai fleet will stick together in single file until one of the following happen: you knocked down a mast, if using 2 or more ships and sail in different direct. Always keep wind direction in focus. If they have wind at their backs it is easier to knock down their sails. If they started gaining too much on you try to gain some distance before firing again.

You can take out a galleon with a brig or sloop 1v1.

- Stay in group formation(line of battle) it boosts your firepower and morale(friendly unit nearby), - use chainshots to shoot off their masts, it works best when you are crossing the T and their sails are fully set. - if not or you are side to side use round shots and grape shots (if the hull has holes) -shots in bow and stern (round shots) are devastating for morale. - sometimes its helpful to group the smaller ships (sloop to 6th &5th in mid and endgame) in a 2nd group to sail around the battle theatre with chainshots (roundshots too weak for the real rates (6&5 are called rates but are frigates) and they can be killed or blown up from a full volley of a galaon for example) - auto aim is fine but sometimes you want to shoot at one particular ship (like the bigger but slower one instead of a fast encountering sloop) dont waste every volley of your ships at one ship: with alt+fire the ships kind of prioritze one ship without sailings towards it so you can hold the formation (works with line infantry aswell) + If you even switch off the fire at will button they only shoot at this ships if its in range. (Sometimes helpful so you can manage the volleys of your ships of the line) - try crossing the T, - always have the wind advantage (avoid sailing into the wind), - when your ships of the line passed the enemy fleet turn around and do the same again and again so your ships moving like a S-type. - Smaller ships are giving up this way after their masts are gone. Bigger ships need some round shots after they cannot move anymore to weaken their hull strenght and morale. But after they cannot move anymore you can get a good shooting angle and you can shoot them down until the morale is low and you can enter them (it doesnt end in a fight they instant are giving up) -at some point its clever to break the formation and to micro the fleet but this depends on the situation, like chasing or circling one ship etc. You will be able to capture a whole fleet like that . Have fun!

i've done this in a very hard battle with my 2 fourth rates against 6 galleons and i've managed to win i used their slowness to my advantage

@@scottanos9981 Not terrible, it's 400 just like 4th rates and higher ships. It's only the 5th and 6th rates that have 500 range and of course the artillery ships that have more.

well the hidden gem is you can make heaps of money by capturing enemy ships. This can be a great way to gain extra income in the game.

@@FaramirsRangers Yes, I did that. I would shoot a 'Rating' bellow me (3rd rates against 4th rates, 2 rates against 3rd rates etc). I would do the whole battle with 'Chain Shot', I would always capture the whole enemy fleet, and lose no more than 750 gold in repairs. But the fleet never paid for its up keep, even if you do get 7-8k in gold, you only get that every 7-8 turns, whereas you still have to pay them 2500+ plus every turn. One thing you could do is put whole fleets on the major trade routes and make 5000+ a turn. Most of my fleets are only 4-6 3rd rates, and the rest Indiamen. But I still felt like I was wasting money somehow.

How did the EA actually suppose us, players to win naval battles they are soo damn hard than land battles

And this is why I am so happy they scrapped naval battles for the Warhammer TW games, and I hope they never make naval battles in future titles. A complete and utter waste of time and resources, when this is the type of braindead strategy you can use to win. Anyway I'm pretty sure most people just auto resolve naval battles anyway.

Alex Game you must not play land battles either then because you can use these type of strategies in most total war battles.

I think the should make this game a ship battle totalwar only. Land battles sucked. Sieges where okay, but buggy as hell

I used this method for every naval battle then I captured 20 galleons and employed them to raid enemy trade lines, practically raining money in every turn 💰

It might seem like it but it is not easy to do. The ai is actually quite good in naval battles. This method is way better than taking first rates and mindlessly slugging it out for a loss :)
