Nauvoo Expositor Burned because of Joseph Smith's treason - Episode 19
The Nauvoo Expositor was a newspaper in Nauvoo, Illinois, that published only one issue, on June 7, 1844. Its publication, and the destruction of the printing press ordered by Joseph Smith, set off a chain of events that led to Smith's death.
The Expositor was founded by several seceders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and some non-Mormons in the Nauvoo area. The single edition of the newspaper was critical of Smith and other church leaders. Specifically, Smith was criticized for teaching doctrines such as plural marriage and exaltation (plurality of gods).
In response to the newspaper's publication, Smith and the Nauvoo City Council declared the paper a public nuisance, and ordered the press destroyed. The town marshal carried out the order during the evening of June 10.
The destruction of the press led to charges of riot against Smith and other members of the Council. After Smith surrendered on the charges, he was also charged with treason against Illinois. Smith was killed by a mob while awaiting a trial in Carthage Jail.

Learning about a psychopath's life and actions is like watching a train wreck: you don't "want" to, but you "have" to. Kind of like the song Vicarious by the band Tool.
Mind boggling that all this real life drama and dangerous drama at that. Even still some happening to this day. All because of a lying con artist. Makes me think of last years election!

When the free expression of ideas/facts becomes a public nuisance, then you become a religion.
I’m so happy that you finally uploaded episode 19, I was so confused why this wasn’t covered more in the series. I just love this coverage as I am very fascinated by the Mormon faith, only because it is just bonkers!!! Wow,is that what Dave looks like 😉. Welcome to the future 😊

Yeah it looks like Mr. Dave came to the 21st century and left his polaroid video camera
This was both educational and entertaining.
But but but, the missionaries told me ALL the charges were false? :-)

Douglas as a Mormon-friendly politician is fascinating. I’ve got to find a book about the 1850s and 60s with a Mormon lens applied
Stephen A. Douglas was not just a "Jack Mormon" in the original sense, he was a suitor wanting to marry Mary Todd, the future Mrs. Lincoln who was highly ambitious to promote her husband's political career. If she had chosen Stephen instead of Abe, i think she would certainly have been a Jack Mormon too.

Stephen Douglas and Mary Todd. Interesting 😮😮😮😮😮
This was great! Absolutely Fascinating! The U.S. Constitution came so very close to being overthrown. How many people cared about the danger???
I knew something was missing from the playlist‼‼
I thought you meant a mormon was running for president in current year and got confused. Mitt Romney's campaign was a long time ago.
@ #NetFlix please sign this guy up. Such freaking great drama.
My 5th great grandfather Edward Johnson split from the polygamist sect and stayed with the non-polygamist sect around this time. Sadly his son George decided to follow Brigham Young to Utah.
There are two possibilities: either Smith destroyed the Expositor because he didn’t want people to know he was a polygamist, or he destroyed the printing press because it falsely claimed that he was a polygamist.

That's it. Class dismissed.
I think this might be interesting enough to do a full series on. Two or three seasons if it takes that to tell the story. But more than being interesting, it's American history and it should be told to the fullest and clearest possible. But no, let's line up for fantasy history movies. Unreal. Great show, as always.
I love how many exposes were made against the Mormons.
If they could have got it together, they could have founded outposts along the Oregon Trail to sell provisions and offer shelter. They had preached to Native Americans before so may have had their foot in that door. Maybe they could have sold the natives on the idea of becoming "white and delightsome" and established a business partnership via a supply chain starting in Nauvoo.
Derek's hick voice is fucking hilarious :D I need Joseph Smith's biography recorded with that voice as an audiobook. It would sell like hotcakes :D
According to an interview with William Law the left the second number of the nauvoo expositor in the printing press. It was ready to go. But the next day the press was destroyed while they were gone.
Man, are you sure you're not talking about Donald Trump?

Hey,JOEseph Biden said right from his child sniffing face - You don't have to be jewish to be a zionist! I'll bet he was talking about this crazy stuff about setting up Zion right here in america. He's letting immigrants in to work and vote just like JS did ! Oh,and the SOCIALIST guise to rob the people of their money and build up tyranny is EXACTLY whats going on.Oh, and look up what Stephan Douglas did to try to continue slavery and hung out with Joeseph Smith...and he was a DEOMCRAT. They were and still are the party of racism. They use them for votes and then work against them.
I really want hbo to pick this up. With all the sex drugs and rock and roll going on in the mid 1800s Mormon world
Excellent. Thank you Bryce et al. Who knew?
Ok. Stephen Douglas and Tim Ballard's tale of JS and Abe....???
I thought we were on episode 23 Wait a misogynistic, womanizing, bankrupt 4 times, traitor to Russian kind of crazy is less crazy than Joseph Smith. industrialization requires continuity with a waterways that connect to coal also needs a source i iron ore. The muddy Mississippi bottom land is nether a source for either. Those iron ore reserves in west are generally in the Colorado basin. Coal is in Wyoming, way far away.
We. Are. SMITH VISON...
Right or wrong Smith believed he was well within his rights to destroy the Expositor. In a letter to Governor Ford he wrote the following: "The press was declared a nuisance under the authority of the charter as written in 7th section of Addenda, the same as in the Springfield charter, so that if the act declaring the press a nuisance was unconstitutional, we cannot see how it is that the charter itself is not unconstitutional: and if we have erred in judgment, it is an official act, and belongs to the Supreme Court to correct it, and assess damages versus the city to restore property abated as a nuisance. If we have erred in this thing, we have done it in good company; for Blackstone on "Wrongs," asserts the doctrine that scurrilous prints may be abated as nuisances....If we "have committed a gross outrage upon the laws and liberties of the people," as your Excellency represents, we are ready to correct that outrage when the testimony is forthcoming. All men are bound to act in their sphere on their own judgment, and it would be quite impossible for us to know what your Excellency's judgment would have been in the case referred to; consequently acted on our own and according to our best judgment, after having taken able counsel in the case. If we have erred, we again say we will make all right if we can have the privilege."
Behold, thus saith the Lord to his servant Joseph Smith Jr.: "Inasmuch as the Nauvoo Expositor will expose the truth, thou must needs send thy flying monkeys to destroy it."
Very interesting. Allways thought that lots of the Mormon ideas (I use the word with reluctance...its better than giving it "theology") are the type of stuff that no education/no subtitles protestant lay people have kind of bubbling underneath (the Catholic ones have their own). ALLWAYS....the trinity thing goes out the window. Kind of. Heaven is YOU becoming a god. Kind of. Religion becomes conflated with your country/ethnicity. Kind of.
Very sad remember these people were poor and hard working people, in that time could be hung for stealing ?
"NAILED BY DAVID FITZGERALD!"
In reality is that Judas is Joseph Smith !
