"When you're not confident, or you're really nervous, you're often times thinking about what's going to happen instead of what you're going to do. We try to bring our athletes to be focused on what they're going to do, what's in their control. When you grow confidence in what you're going to do, instead of whats going to happen, then you realized it's all inside you."

I understand going to Stanford for the location, the weather, the education, running program, etc but to train with your beast of a brother at altitude with Mike Smith as your coach...

Yeah I don’t get why the young twins didn’t go to NAU.. I feel they aren’t performing as they could.. I know they are only Freshman.. but I think NAU would have been amazing for them

Would have been better for their running careers without a doubt.. Sounded like they really went to focus more on their long term future rather than running

@@marcumxc good point.. a Stanford degree is obviously worth more.. and maybe they realised running with Nico over the years the difference between being a great NCAA athlete and one with potential to go pro and make a career out of it.. big difference. Probably wise to go for the Stanford degree.. Nicos talent is the next level required for pro and it doesn’t come around very often.. and even he will struggle at pro level

@@lilyjazzification Agree with your point. The Young twins seems to look up too much to consider themselves his equal. Overall Stanford this year has not looked good. That can't build confidence. Maybe the Young twins don't want to be pro runners and that's fine. Get your diploma and stop after they graduate. Gary Martin should've gone to NAU, he's a typical NAU runner with range from 800m to cross country. NAU has recent alumni like Grijalva, Nur, Beamish, etc training with them. Martin in NAU and they win cross-country and top 3 indoors. He's special like Colin, Drew and Nico. Young twins will go the way of Sprout and Leo.

It’s been amazing to watch coach Smith bring Nico along. From when he would basically bark at the media to give the young athlete some space to grow on day one to this weekend where he is shaking his head at the outcome. Amazing.

yeah obviously Nico Young was a big talent out of high school being top 5 in X-C his first year of college, but Mike Smith has really developed him well and has a great kick now that is needed to get a spot on the 5000m team for Paris...

Forget the 10k, Run the 5k at olympic trials and make the team. I hate the push up to 10k and Marathon so early, he's only 21. give him some years

i hope he runs the 10k. if he ran 2 finals in 2 days the 10k should be well within his capability being a week later. He deserves to go for the Hat-trick.

I justed watched Nico's interview. Don't know why I didn't 0:01 watch that before this. He does talk about the Ten. Didn't realize he was thinking about it since this meet was such a focus. And I really thought Coach was saying No to it. You know how maybe and being vague is usually No.

There are a few things that suggest no. 1. He was amazing in high school breaking records so he didn't come out of nowhere. 2. His VO max is through the roof so he is literally built differently. 3. He's always been an insanely hard worker. 4. His mechanics were always bad with the rolling shoulders and the pained expression. Fixing that alone would improve his speed and that is his biggest difference. 5. He trains and sometimes competes at crazy elevation. That is a natural enhancer most runners don't have.
