I feel like the best protective styles are the ones that don't require extra hair involved (just use your own hair). That way, you're not forced to leave it in for weeks at a time. Just taking down a protective style that has added hair, it's so dirty and there are tangles at the roots that could lead to breakage while taking it out.

Girl, I took your advice and eliminated oils during my last wash day. I am shook. When you first said that, I was like, "ok, this lady crazy." But Jenn!!! My paddle brush glided through my hair just fine without it and my twist out lasted longer. I didn't need a ton of product to manage my tangles at all. I don’t think it’s anything wrong with braids or wigs. You just have to go to someone you trust and wash your hair at least once every two weeks. Also spray your hair with conditioner and leave in no longer than 6 weeks to 8 weeks. If you so that your hair should be clean. I know the last time I did braids I had none of that build up. Now I don’t do braids etc all the time. I think this a fun way to change your hair. I am interested in seeing how long this oils and butters trend last. There are certain styles you can’t do as well without grease like cornrows, twists etc. It’s just smoother and sleeker.

I've stopped with the braids, oiling my scalp, etc. Instead, I now twist my own hair, I spritz my scalp with water+acv+a few drops of essential oils like peppermint, rosemary and lavender (rather than putting them in carrier oils and slathering my scalp with it!) I deep condition for 10 minutes max while I shower after washing my hair, and I wash my hair every 2 weeks now (instead of one a month!) I'll see how my 3rd year being natural goes, please God.

Protective styles are the way a lot of people retain length because they aren’t able to style their natural hair in a way that they can set it and leave it alone for a week or two. Having your hair “out” without a proper plan/method involves you trying to figure out what to do with your hair everyday or 3 times a week because the styles aren’t lasting. Over manipulation causes a lot of breakage for people and if you aren’t getting your hair styles to stay for multiple days you end up over manipulating. I think demonizing protective styles is popular but for some people it’s actually the most healthy/realistic option.

  • @beyoncestan-oo8zt

What is healthy for hair is relative. Like maybe protective styling is healthier than the other options that are practical for your life. And a lot of people leave in protective styles for 2 months because of the cost. What if you can’t afford to get braids done every 6 weeks? Also I’ve noticed that if you protective style, oil can be helpful in preventing your hair from getting very tangled with the braiding hair. When I tried the whole no oil/butter with braids (they were in for 5 weeks) and I took my braids out it was a tangled mess. If you do braids, oils might be helpful in avoiding some intense tangles or at least that’s what I’ve found to be the case 🤷🏾‍♀️

You know what, I do agree with this. If you don’t have a plan for your hair and don’t care for it weekly, it’s likely best to braid it *properly*.

@@JennJackson how do you "agree with this" if the point of adopting a simplified approach to haircare (shampoo, condition, style) is to ease the burden of having to freshen up or restyle multiple times a week? I typically avoid watching videos from the majority of people who claim to follow this approach because the education is lacking and this exchange is an example of that. The person who posted this message didn't walk away knowing that setting and forgetting your natural hair is possible. You can wear your hair out and not need to restyle during the week AND maintain healthy hair. If your intent is to churn out content about your personal experience vs. actually educating your audience, I stand corrected.

@@beyoncestan-oo8zt why get your hair braided if you can’t afford it? There are other ways to effectively protect your hair that doesn’t require you to braid with synthetic hair, weave or glue in to install a wig. Also the reason your braidout was a mess is probably because you didn’t detangle your hair and remove the bulk of your shed hair before styling it. The No oils no butter method or layering your hair with products is irrelevant if your hair isn’t detangle properly.

We should leave the term *protective style* in 2021 because if you wear your hair braided, in a weave or put it under a wig most of the year it should not be called protective styling. It’s your lifestyle. Same goes for wash and go, straight naturals, locs etc… They are a lifestyle. Just choose your hair routine and products accordingly.

I use to wear weaves my edges were trash, then I tried clip ins, they were pulling my hair out. So then I stopped the clip ins, which led me to wear buns however I started using oils and creams deep conditioners with fenugreek, chebe powders. Now my hair has grown down my back. It’s even longer than my weave and clip -ins. I was even surprised 😯 I love having my family members (not strangers) check to see if it’s real.

In 2020 i bought a camille rose oil to oil my scalp and i used it daily. After a while I noticed ny scalp was so itchy and irritated. Scratching my scalp actually started giving me scabs and it was like my scalp was on fire. I stupidly bought a mint oil because I figured it would be more soothing and I still had that irritated scalp. I bought ANOTHER oil because i was having the same issue until one day i stumbled upon a video of someone saying why they no longer use oils on their scalp. I tried it and noooooo itchy scalp. Rn I'm just trying for my scalp to heal from the trauma

Also I realised I was confused re protective styles as category. I considered it to be stuff where your hair is hidden like wigs, weaves, crochet, braids with synthetic hair over a longer term. Having my own hair twisted up feels like wearing my hair "out" even if it's not a twist out. Then I wear that style until I next wash my hair.

Now I wash it monthly, finger detangle it weekly whith a blend of oils and essential oils and massage my scalp in order to use my sebum and cover my hair whit it. To mee camparing skin and scalp makes no sense, the scalp is protected by the hair so they do not experience the environment the same

After my mom stopped taking my hair (oiling scalp too), my scalp was constantly itchy from dry scalp and it wasn't until years later when I started taking care of my hair and went back to oil did it subside. I used to wash my hair with a gentle sulphate free moisturizing shampoos and the next day my scalp would itch and flake (I get if from my dad). But with oils it won't itch until a week or so later. Also I think its all about people abusing protective styles too, abandoning your hair in any state will give you those results, them being too tight is also no bueno and too much of anything is a bad thing. YALL WHY BACK TO BACK?? lol like the video though, I feel the same way about most. Love to see an Ottawa youtuber here on youtube!

I know for a fact that oils work because I have given my hair the same care but with different products and have finally found some products that have made my hair grow in spots I never thought I'd see hair again so that's an opinion. Maybe oils didn't work for her, but they do work. Try things for yourself and not go by what didn't work for the last person that tried it.

I don't use anything with coconut in my hair. I don't trim my ends every 6 months. I don't wash and deep condition every week or every two weeks I actually only do that about every 3 months. That's what works for my hair I keep my hair in a protective style for a month to 2 months that's what I found help keep hair retention and keep my hair moisturized and healthy once I started doing that my hair continue to keep getting longer and longer. And I very rarely use a comb or brush on my hair. Hair grows from within as well and we have to learn how to keep our hair retention. I didn't know how to keep my hair retention and I will cause breakage by the way I will handle my hair with brushes and combs once I learned that it was all smooth sailing. And I've done the avocado mask as well I had tiny avocado particles all through my hair for a long time and all I could do was worry about the avocado spoiling and my hair possibly causing mold.

Not sure I'd label what I was dping as protection styling but I just didnt know what do do with it in the tradition stage. So I got braids. Micros were falling out on my trip to Florida. Cornrows took my edges out. They are still thin. After that I was like no ma'am! I never got braids or cornrows again. I am still suffering from that time. But I press on!

100% agree with ditching oiling our scalp. Ever since I was little, I was taught I need to oil my scalp and as a result I believe this is why I’ve suffered with dandruff for most of my life. I remember there was a point I would wash my hair then oil my scalp with shea butter and by the next day, my scalp felt soo itchy and dirty. From that point, I decided to ditch the oiling my scalp. Instead, I use a few drops of essential oils such peppermint and lemongrass and dilute it in water in a spray bottle, then spray that on my scalp. My scalp has been thriving ever since!
