@@GoldenKingdom-kp6dt genetics has a big part to play, obviously. but other than that, i stick to low manipulation styles. any style where i can easily access my scalp and ends. mini twists have really helped with length retention. i’ll keep the twists in for about a month at a time, making sure to regularly apply grease to my scalp and ends. i even do my blow outs and silk presses with grease. less than i would use on my curly hair, but still enough. i like to wait at least a day between blow drying and pressing so the grease can soak in. i hope something in that randomness helped. 💀

So many natural hair KZreadrs keep using this awkwardly. We never took a whole glob and smothered our hair with it. We put a little swipe on our scalp and let it comb or brush down the shaft. Maybe added a little light pink hair lotion to the hair and styled it. We never globbed grease on.

I use Blue Magic! And I won’t say it “helps my hair to grow” but it definitely helps me to retain length. When I started using this my trims went from a couple of inches to centimeters! The trick I’ve found is to use it during the loc method with oil! But I don’t use a ton of it so it’s easier to wash out. I mainly apply it to my mid shaft and ends. And use more oil on my roots. And somehow it’s WAY easier to detangle my hair on wash days.

Agree! I returned back to blue magic a few years ago. The key is not to put on scalp; shaft and ends only. Also, use a small amount not the plops we had in the past leaving you with tranfers everywhere. I just finished a container I've had almost 1.5 years now...use small amounts. I'm mid back now, it's not making your hair grow. It is helping retain length by stopping breakage and split ends.

The early 2010s was definitely an experiment in finding what worked for my hair. All the KZread girlies had their hacks and swore up and down what did and didn't work. But if I learned anything now, it's that everything is not gonna work for everybody. Everyone's hair is different. Genetics and what's going on inside your body affects the way your hair grows more so than what you put on it. I stopped using grease primarily because it gave me acne and it made my already oily skin a grease pan. I got locs and simplified my hair routine and my hair is retaining so much length.

I noticed less hair grease on my pillow when I wore 2 hair bonets instead of just one. Try that. Also hair grease is best removed by a sulfate shampoo. @@11crystaln When I was a loose natural, yes I would always deep condition after clarifying, since a clarifying shampoo is very drying. I'm locc'd now, so my hair regimen has changed. I think it's good to alternate between a clarifying and moisturizing shampoo, because if you wash your hair frequently, then you don't always need to clarify. Since I've been locc'd, I alternate between the two, but I don't wash my hair once a week. However I will wash my hair as often as needed. The more active I am, the more I will sweat, which results in more washing! 😊 I also don't use grease on my locs because it seems to not work well. Omg! I also got some grease a few weeks ago, my single strand knots have been out of control and I didn’t know what else to try, so I decided to buy a jar for the first time in over 10 years. And wow! Im still experimenting with how much is too much but you really don’t need a lot. I gasped at how much you put on 😭 I’m traumatized too by the grease stains on pillows and clothes so I’m super careful; only the tiniest bit on my ends and I have tried it with the doux hair mousse which is what I usually use for twists and they actually mixed nicely, I also keep it far away from my scalp! Washing it out wasn’t too bad. I think it could be the key for single strand knots and friction as I’m all about trying to retain length. I can’t believe we’re all going back to the grease 😭😭

The trick with grease to prevent that oil slick down ur neck and pillow, is to use a little. LESS IS MORE! And it washes out a LOT easier. I shampoo twice and I’m good 😆😆😆

I think I saw that video too! lol. I read the comments and someone (or maybe it was the OP) said they have scalp psoriasis and the grease been helping, and I decided to pick up a jar of the OG blue blue magic, cause baby.. the way winter treats my scalp, I'm willing to try almost anything. Plus, I don't remember grease being at bad thing when I was younger, so it's worth a try. So far, so good.

I use grease mainly on my roots and scalp to avoid dandruff. Idk if that would work for everyone but it does for me. I only use it after washing. Im not terribly active so wash day is every other week or so. I avoid getting too much grease on the length of my hair bcs i dont want it to give me acne. Oh and it just leads to it getting everywhere. A ring of grease on the face and neck, all over your ears, as well as stained shirts/collars

I am in my late 50's . I have been using grease most of my life. I stopped using all these new products. I went back to water spray, a light grease and a hair lotion. The new products were breaking my hair off and leaving it too dry, tangled and hard. A lot of the newer products have alcohol and some chemicals in them so that their product doesn't go bad. You should try spraying your hair with water first then use some hair lotion and a little grease. My hair grew back using grease because it stopped my hair ends from breaking off and having fairy knots. My hair is growing back to waist length now.

For me when I went back to using grease my hair retained moisture better. I noticed a big difference in my hair when I don’t use it. My hair looks like a tumbleweed without it . Grease is life for me!!! And it doesn’t take much either. Use it on wet hair only and when I shampoo I use a clarifying shampoo followed by a moisturizing shampoo.

When my hair was long which was not too long ago, after washing my hair, I would moisten it with water, and add a leave in conditioner or hair curl define cream, I used Bella curls, it just kept my hair hydrated. And I could comb my hair and get those uniform waves. And I would do that and then add just a little bit of wet line external gel and a tad be of hair grease like African Best and when I undid my twist in the morning my hair would be so soft wavy and feel good, it would keep it hold and would last all week as far as moisture and softness, but like cause I sleep I’d probably twist it into a hair style in the middle of the week with just a little more water and Bella curls

Look, my mama LOOOOOVED water, a hard brush, a comb and the BLUE ultra sheen grease. And my hair was full, long, and manageable. She also did my hair regularly. If she used anything else I have no clue I don’t use ultra sheen nor blue magic in my everyday/week routine but I will pull out some liquid hair oil and grease my scalp on occasion. Especially in the winter here in the suburbs surrounding Chicago. But I will pull out my shea butter, avocado oil, aloe juice mix and cover the ends of my hair towards the end of my week leading up to wash day to try and keep the moisture locked in my hair

A tip for washing the grease outside. Before you add any water or shampoo, work a cheap slippery conditioner through your hair(I use garnier pure clean conditioner) rinse the conditioner out with warm/hot water and then shampoo.

Its about retention. Clarifying shampoo, a good conditioner, grease and plats or twist. If yoj do a twist out...wash your hair two days after and plat it back up. Three plus days of leaving it out is risky behavior depending on porosity.

😅 me too, I think we pivoted too much during the natural hair movement. We should have stopped at "Moisturising and sealing, your ends, protect your ends, low manipulation is the key to length retention. If you're alive your hair is growing".... Instead everything was upheaved, ingredients were demonised, every day a new hack from some remote countryside in Africa and Asia would pop up. I'm literally back to Tresemme and hair pomades, the very things I abandoned 10 years prior at the promise of long hair by the movement, but now I know to protect my ends and low manipulation.

I stopped using blue magic as well. In the beginning of my hair journey it was all fine, but later on I started to notice that my shake wouldn’t absorb products properly even after I washed it. I tried using clay washes, but after applying grease again, the hair would feel really bad and would not absorbs other products well. It was puffy and very stiff. After I stopped using grease, my hair went back to normal. Now I only use Lotta body foam and a leave In Cream
