NATO summit: Trudeau boasts Canada's defence spending despite not meeting targets

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau boasted about Canada's contribution to NATO during a keynote address at the NATO Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence on Tuesday.
"When we took office, Canada was spending less than one per cent of its GDP on its defence every year. But we vowed to change that right away. We followed through on our word. We are investing more in our troops, in our capacity and in our capabilities all while continuing to provide assistance to our allies resisting Russian aggression," Trudeau said.
Analysts say Canada's involvement in major discussions at the summit may be complicated by how allies view its commitment to defence spending.
Canada’s updated defence policy forecasts spending will rise from 1.37 per cent of GDP currently to 1.76 per cent by 2030.
Canada is the only NATO ally not meeting the alliance’s target that has yet to provide a detailed roadmap on getting to two per cent, which NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said will be expected at this week’s summit.

Jagmeet Singh is right - he says Poilievre is disqualified as a leader when there are clear allegations of foreign interference which directly touch on the CPC - and Poilievre refuses to even know. "No leader that puts the interest of their party beyond the interest of the country has any merit leading the country." Any MP involved with foreign agents should not be allowed to run in the next election! Poilievre is apparently okay with that. Are you?

@garyhaggquist740 So, somehow, Poilievre is to blame for the Liberal and NDP MPs who acted with China to win the last two elections? The reason Poilievre refuses to look at the documents is because he would have to sign an nondisclosure agreement. He's smart. Trudeau is trying to shut him up and remove a threat and Poilievre isn't going to allow it. He's smart and experienced at the games Trudeau has played for nine years.

There are no doubt plenty of Trudeau's socialist programs that can be defunded and the tax dollars redirected to that far higher priority. Could start with defunding the CBC.

One of the worst things to ever happen to Canada was when Conservatives turned against the environment after the Reform/Alliance takeover of the Progressive Conservatives party by Stephen Harper. "Climate change is the most serious environmental challenge and time is running out." - Brian Mulroney, last Progressive Conservative PM elected by CDNs.

@@Wheelsspin.81 Spare us the Conservative disinformation. If you're referring to the carbon tax - the Bank of Canada has stated that it has only increased inflation by .15% - a fraction of 1% - minuscule. As CDN economist Trevor Tombe from the Univ of Alberta has shown - CDNs earning less than $250,000 per year get more back in carbon rebates than they pay in carbon tax. As has been shown - the main driver of inflation is record windfall corporate profits - in particular by the fossil fuel industry. But you're okay with that right? The largest ever study on carbon pricing proves that it works at lowering fossil fuel CO2 emissions growth rates. Meanwhile, the world's largest accounting firm KPMG stated that in 2023 - 60% of small & medium sized businesses in Canada reported being impacted by record wildfires, damaging storms, floods, and heat domes - with 51% experiencing increased operating costs as a result - and 44% reporting a direct loss of revenue. The GDP costs of climate change by 2030 are projected to be $35 billion, and by 2055 to be $80 - $103 billion. A report by the European Central Bank in 2023 shows that climate change will increase global inflation by as much as 1% every year until 2035, and drive up food prices by as much as 3%. When will Conservatives acknowledge that climate change is increasing costs and causing hardship for Canadians? Ever?

Canada has one road, and one railway connecting from the east and west of the country. It is in Canada's best interest to stay in NATO as I don't believe it even has the infrastructure, logistics to defend itself, ignoring the infrastructure south of the border.

I won't vote for spending more on NATO. We spend too much on the military to defend Europe which has a population close to a billion people at a much higher standard of living. My message to Europe is "Get your act together as one country". Canadian colonies had to do the same in the 1800s to protect against American expansionism and somehow we managed to bring French and English together to do so. The American colonies also managed to unite. It's not as hard as you make it out. Keep in mind that all European nations are represented in the north american population plus we have the people of other nations beyond Europe. So grow up Europe. It's time to be an adult and you can pay for your own defense.
