NATO summit: Biden delivers remarks to commemorate alliance's 75th anniversary | FULL
U.S. President Joe Biden delivered remarks in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Biden's speech comes as the annual NATO summit kicks off in Washington, where dozens of world leaders and the 32 governments in the military alliance will gather to discuss various world issues and developments within NATO.
2024 will mark the fouth summit in Washington, after NATO was established there on April 4, 1949. It will also mark the first summit since Sweden gained memebership and be the last to see Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in charge, before he retires in his role.
Expected topics to be covered over the three-day summit is member state defence spending - which only 23 nations of the alliance are meeting, according to Stoltenberg - as well as international support for Ukraine, who is not only seeking membership, but in the midst of an over-two-year war with Russia.

You probably think the US runs NATO too. Wrong, it is a 32 country "Alliance" that defends its county members from aggressions. It is lead by Secretary General of NATO.Jens Stoltenberg. USA is but one of 31 country members.

@@dancyr5821 2% of gdp is what other countries are paying (not all countries are paying 2%) as we are footing 200 billion per year and the number is raising yearly is a drop in the bucket. We make up 85% of the funding for nato. Please do your research first before commenting.

@@ClementPierson My point is that no one owes another NATO member country any money because a country fell below 2% in vesting in" their own" countries military. The 2% in not payable to any other country. It is expected that the 2% is earmarked for a countries military up keep. The 200 billion is invested in your countries military.

It seems to me that NATO has been alliance of those nations led by European peoples, and that there is a building antagonism to them by other peoples. As Stotelberg lists these antagonists (Iran, North Korea and China) it is clear they are non-European. Africa and Latin America seem ambivalent. The informal inclusion of Japan and South Korea is a healthy step in broadening the history and shared values (e.g. Equality, Liberty, Democracy and Rule of law) beyond Eurocentric nations, and hopefully there will be more of this in the decades to come. The main challenge for NATO, in terms of the growing anti-European sentiment, is the legacy of colonialism and the climate emergency brought on be European industrial-capitalism. Beyond the military-industrial technology, the ability of all nations to respond to resource and climate pressures will determine our shared security and the prospects for peace and prosperity.
