Nativity Carol : Kings College Choir, Cambridge

The Choir of Kings College Chapel, Cambridge sing John Rutter's Nativity Carol. A gentler version, I think, than my other post of this carol by St Patrick's, Dublin.
Written in 1963, this was one of its composers
earliest pieces. It was published in 1967
with organ accompaniment, and later
scored for strings by the composer.
Nativity Carol
Born in a stable so bare,
Born so long ago;
Born neath light of star
He who loved us so.
Far away, silent He lay,
Born today, your homage pay,
Christ is born for aye,
Born on Christmas Day.
Cradled by mother so fair,
Tender her lullaby;
Over her son so dear
Angel hosts fill the sky.
Far away, silent He lay,
Born today, your homage pay,
Christ is born for aye,
Born on Christmas Day.
Wise men from distant far land,
Shepherds from starry hills
Worship this babe so rare,
Hearts with His warmth He fills.
Far away, silent He lay,
Born today, your homage pay,
Christ is born for aye,
Born on Christmas Day.
Love in that stable was born
Into our hearts to flow;
Innocent dreaming babe,
Make me Thy love to know.
Far away, silent he lay,
Born today, your homage pay,
Christ is born for aye,
Born on Christmas Day.

    This is the most sweetest solemn carol sung by King's College. The sweetest of the sweets. It numbs and humbles me. Very magical and therapeutic.

    Heartbreakingly beautiful. And the choirs singing is like being stroked with the feather from an Angels wing. So delicate and restrained. Soundtrack to heaven. Bliss! Thank you forever John Rutter.

    Having sung nearly all of Rutter's carols in DC churches around Christmas time, this is the only one I really hope to sing again; it's by far his least saccharine, most earnest setting of a carol text. Always a fun experience.

    Intensity via restraint. I am not a scholar, but I would think that it is very hard for the trebles to sing as quietly as they do. The dynamics in this interpretation are very thoughtfully chosen. I was probably wrong about the year (probably 2006 after all). Bravo to the performers, and thanks to drwestbury for sharing it with us.

    Daniel - the Christian hope in which songs like this one are rooted includes, centrally, "I believe... in the RESURRECTION of the BODY"... that is, the hope of a new body, like that of our risen Lord, but a REAL body, and so able to SING and to HEAR beautiful music!

    +Liam Ouzel I believe that Linda was saying that the words that the choir is singing are hard to understand. I have the CD, and I had to look at the liner notes to understand what the choir was singing. This is often true of "high church" music. The orchestral part is beautiful, but the words are hard to decipher. (To complicate things even further, sometimes the words are in Latin!)

    It's unfortunate that the rich trove of Christmas music is called 'other-worldly' as this existence holds beauty when we suss out beauty in controversy and diversity and still bring both sides together to celebrate the wonders of mortal unity in art and prayer.

    Was this in "Carols for Choirs"?. I have sung it and it couldn't have been later than early '70,s........or is this yet another senior moment? This version is, as you say, gentler than the St Patrick's offering however their (St P's) obvious enthusiasism and enjoyment of the piece more than compensates. Thanks for posting.
