The Choir of Kings College Chapel, Cambridge sing John Rutter's Nativity Carol. A gentler version, I think, than my other post of this carol by St Patrick's, Dublin.
Written in 1963, this was one of its composers
earliest pieces. It was published in 1967
with organ accompaniment, and later
scored for strings by the composer.
Nativity Carol
Born in a stable so bare,
Born so long ago;
Born neath light of star
He who loved us so.
Far away, silent He lay,
Born today, your homage pay,
Christ is born for aye,
Born on Christmas Day.
Cradled by mother so fair,
Tender her lullaby;
Over her son so dear
Angel hosts fill the sky.
Far away, silent He lay,
Born today, your homage pay,
Christ is born for aye,
Born on Christmas Day.
Wise men from distant far land,
Shepherds from starry hills
Worship this babe so rare,
Hearts with His warmth He fills.
Far away, silent He lay,
Born today, your homage pay,
Christ is born for aye,
Born on Christmas Day.
Love in that stable was born
Into our hearts to flow;
Innocent dreaming babe,
Make me Thy love to know.
Far away, silent he lay,
Born today, your homage pay,
Christ is born for aye,
Born on Christmas Day.

I was a Chorister at Southwell Minster. Christmas Eve was very special and this was my favourite.
This is the most sweetest solemn carol sung by King's College. The sweetest of the sweets. It numbs and humbles me. Very magical and therapeutic.
Angel Voices ~ like snow falling, soft, soft, down. . .
That little blond boy at the beginning is so sweet, so expressive.

He looks like an angel, he's probably 19 years old now
Heartbreakingly beautiful. And the choirs singing is like being stroked with the feather from an Angels wing. So delicate and restrained. Soundtrack to heaven. Bliss! Thank you forever John Rutter.
Sublime👌
First heard this song 20yrs ago, while attending midnight mass in Parma, Italy...stirring - beautiful...timeless...
I had never heard this carol before. Wow! Just wow!!
Overwhelming in it´s serene beauty.
John Rutter at his Christmas best! What could be better? Those boys' voices make my heart melt.

What could be better, John Rutter at his Christmas best hearing this carol at a service just played so wonderfully !
Having sung nearly all of Rutter's carols in DC churches around Christmas time, this is the only one I really hope to sing again; it's by far his least saccharine, most earnest setting of a carol text. Always a fun experience.

I love Black Gospel as well - but this piece, this choir, WOW
Very nice blend, crescendo's are fantastic. Love all the contrasts. Such clear, warm, and rich tones!
thank you for this beautiful expression of love for the Lord Jesus Christ. let us all remember to thank him for this gift of deliverence we were given today. Prayer does work. Merry Christmas to all and i thank Him for the gift of salvation He has given to us through His son. a gift given freely to us but cost him dearly.
my favourite version!
Gorgeous and God sent! Thank you!
that last verse gets me every time.
Fantabulous Mr John (Christmas) Rutter at his very best as interpreted by Kings. One of my all time favourite 'sings'. :)
most beautiful voices!
we sing this in our choir 2 , its just adorsble! :) i could cry while singing :P
Intensity via restraint. I am not a scholar, but I would think that it is very hard for the trebles to sing as quietly as they do. The dynamics in this interpretation are very thoughtfully chosen. I was probably wrong about the year (probably 2006 after all). Bravo to the performers, and thanks to drwestbury for sharing it with us.
What a gift to be able to see and hear favorite English carols at this special time of year on youtube, and so many by the amazing John Rutter. Thank you so much for posting this.
Most magnificent rendition. Straight to the heart to the eyes of faith.................
thank's King's is like a paradise
Thank you verry much. We sang it in our community in Filosofenfontein (Belgium) on Christmas eve.
On my death bed I will have many regrets. . but one of them will surely be not having ears to hear this music in the next life. . .

Daniel - the Christian hope in which songs like this one are rooted includes, centrally, "I believe... in the RESURRECTION of the BODY"... that is, the hope of a new body, like that of our risen Lord, but a REAL body, and so able to SING and to HEAR beautiful music!

Exquisite version of this piece!
Innocent dreaming babe and risen glorified king, make me thy love to know; make me thy love to show, make me in thy love to grow, make me with thy love to glow, make me forth in thy love to go.
Don't know this one. Here are lyrics as they're somewhat hard to understand: Born in a stable so bare Born so long ago Born 'neath light of star He who loved us so Far away, silent he lay Born today, your homage pay For Christ is born for aye Born on Christmas Day Cradled by mother so fair Tender her lullaby Over her son so dear Angel hosts fill the sky Far away, silent he lay Born today, your homage pay For Christ is born for aye Born on Christmas Day Wise men from distant far land Sheperds from starry hills Worship this babe so rare Hearts with his warmth he fills Far away, silent he lay Born today, your homage pay For Christ is born for aye Born on Christmas Day Love in that stable was born Into our hearts to flow Innocent dreaming babe Make me thy love to know Far away, silent he lay Born today, your homage pay For Christ is born for aye Born on Christmas Day

+Liam Ouzel I believe that Linda was saying that the words that the choir is singing are hard to understand. I have the CD, and I had to look at the liner notes to understand what the choir was singing. This is often true of "high church" music. The orchestral part is beautiful, but the words are hard to decipher. (To complicate things even further, sometimes the words are in Latin!)

This is Rutter's "Nativity Carol". One of my favorites and so beautifully done!
Beautiful singing of a modern carol
Just got the score from our music director that this is on the program for this Christmas season! Sublime!!!
Precious..! Merry Crhistmas.!
This is the best version of this carol!
Hinos lindos❤
It is difficult to say for certain, but I think that it is Stephen Cleobury conducting. IIRC he has been the director there since 1983. This carol is one of my very favorites and brightens my day each time I listen to it.
Magnificent performance! Thanks
loving it
Awesome!

It's unfortunate that the rich trove of Christmas music is called 'other-worldly' as this existence holds beauty when we suss out beauty in controversy and diversity and still bring both sides together to celebrate the wonders of mortal unity in art and prayer.
Lyrics: ("for aye" means "forever") 1. Born in a stable so bare, born so long ago; Born 'neath light of star He who loved us so. Refrain: Far away silent He lay, born today, your homage pay, Christ is born for aye, born on Christmas Day. 2. Cradled by mother so fair, tender her lullaby; Over her Son so dear angel hosts fill the sky.
beautiful ive got the music

A quietly beautiful performance of one of Rutter's best carols. I wonder though, could it be KCC 2008, as opposed to 2006.
I would have loved if my mom put me in a coire group since I was young.

Omar Ortiz Its never too late, being part of a choir at any age can be wonderful it's just finding one where you enjoy it.
This was from Carols From Kings 2006. Yes I agree with what you say about St Patrick's. No criticism was meant.
Nice

Rutter must have been inspired by Warlock's Capriol suite. . . Pieds-en-l'air ...

Thanks for the video. I'd recommend you upload future videos in HD, because KZread streams the audio at a higher bitrate on HD videos
Buon nuit fratelli siamesi😴
Was this in "Carols for Choirs"?. I have sung it and it couldn't have been later than early '70,s........or is this yet another senior moment? This version is, as you say, gentler than the St Patrick's offering however their (St P's) obvious enthusiasism and enjoyment of the piece more than compensates. Thanks for posting.
