Natives Don't Say "Said"
Native English speakers don't say "said" as much as the phrase you will learn in this English lesson. This is great for informal, casual English speaking. Open the description for more info 👇👇👇

This is not another English lesson about reported speech or the difference between say, tell, speak, and talk.
I already made more than one lesson about those here: • Sound Natural and Conf...
This is an English lesson about the way people really speak in real life, which is something your English teacher may not have taught you.
See, textbooks and teachers often stick to the formal ways of saying things. to stick to means to maintain or keep
In all the English classes, reported speech is always taught with the verb “to say,” which in the past is “said.” I said, you said, he/she said, we said, they said.
Natives do say “said,” BUT there is a MUCH more common way to express the same idea…
And your English teacher probably won’t like it…
Are you ready?
Natives don’t say “said,” they say “was like.”
I was like, you were like, s/he was like, we were like, they were like…
And this means “said.” So the next time that you hear someone talking and you hear the word “like,” it may not mean that you “enjoy” something. I like ice cream. No.
It may not be a comparison. You are sweet like candy. No.
It may not be a filler. It’s like… uhm…
It could be another way to say “said!”
And we often reduce “I was like” to “Eyezlike”....
Again, this is not exceedingly proper or formal. I am not encouraging you to use this kind of expression if you are in a professional situation. However, it’s super common in casual speech!
So next time you’re listening to someone tell a story, or if you want to tell a story about what someone said, consider “was like as a way to say “said.”

3:19 The main important lesson idea 🙃
That doggo at the beginning of the video is so easygoing and fluffy, omg.
I've learned to use "was like" naturally just by watching movies and English native speakers. But it's always been a struggle to explain to my students what it means haha. Thank you, Gabby! the video was really useful.

I grew up in Canada and I tend to say "I said.." Saying "I was lie.." might sound dumb sometimes. Actually, I thing people tend to overuse "like".

Natives do say "Said", neither way is wrong or uncommon, it depends where you are from.

You just hit the nail on the head. I was trying to understand this "was like" from the movie and believe me I didn't. Thank you so much indeed. It was cool.
I've always been saying it because I hear native speakers say it, but I'd never realized that it was something like that. Thank you for sharing it! ❤️❤️❤️

Thanks for this lesson Gaby. It’s easy to understand 👍🌸
Excelente aula! Obrigado!
Thanks for your tips.
You're a brilliant teacher..that's a magnificent episode I really appreciate your efforts...
Keep in mind that using colloquial (spoken) language is acceptable in some situations, but basing your communication on this style might come across as an affectation and make you sound uneducated, not native-like, and the moment you need to speak proper English outside of high school situations you might find yourself poorly prepared.
Thank you Gabby, I love your teaching ♡

Sounds like Russian «(и) я такая/такой ..» And also this expressions are close in meaning of word “like”. In Russian expression “like” exists indirectly/implied.

Thanks , it is a great tip.
Thanks for teaching us english from real life. We teachers or students may never learn this because our learning was so much based on textbooks and they sometimes have too formal expressions or quite old fashioned words. I mean languages are so vibrant that change everyday. Keep us updated please

Please don’t forget to capitalize each ‘I’. If you get into the habit of not capitalizing it, you’ll never change and it looks sloppy! You should learn to write in the correct way before you can play with the words.

OK! The main tip is to make sure correctly separate your thoughts and sentences with periods and to always capitalize correctly, like this: “I am learning English. I can understand seventy percent of what is said but I can’t speak fluently. Please give me some tips.” Do you see how ‘English’ is capitalized and the ‘I’s’? Plus, I added periods after ‘English’ and after ‘fluently’. Do you see them?
Thank you so much, You was like great 👍
Thanks 🤗
