Native Spring Blade ??Upgrade?? Terrible!!! Here's how I fixed it.

After installing the Native Watercraft steering upgrade on my Slayer Max, I had a terrible outing in a tournament.
I could not turn my kayak without absolutely wrenching on the handle. I also had an issue with deployment, no spring in my spring blade.
Also, why you should possibly travel to your nearest dealer to get yours fixed, if you have the original style clip system.

Great job on modifying the rudder. Sometimes it’s necessary to make some tweaks

Nicely and well done! I bought this Native Springblade rudder upgrade kit about 3 months ago for my 2021-version Slayer Propel 10 MAX kayak, and the Springblade I got is of the newer version with the pin which goes through the retention clip. I didn't have the issue of the rudder shaft or the cap a bit too big rubbing the shaft well, though the first time I was out on water after its installation, I couldn't deploy the rudder down at all! Had to re-adjust the tension, and have had no issue since then. Cheers.

Thanks, this may very well be an issue that was isolated to early versions or even just a one off production issue. Hopefully if anyone else runs into the problem this could help. The rudder upgrade itself was great while it was working, I'm sure it will continue to impress.

You are hitting on my biggest grievance with the native products: you shouldn’t have to “upgrade” a kayak that already costs $4000 in order to make it fishable. This is an expensive boat, a boat that costs more than my first three vehicles combined. It’s a lot of money. And yet the steering handle? Sucks. They call that Berleypro handle an upgrade, but its not an “upgrade”-it’s a requirement. That rudder / steering wheel in the back? Sucks. You have to upgrade. The nylon cables? They’re not bad, but since you’re already changing everything else, you might as well do the cables as well. There are 3rd party companies whose lone business service is selling “upgrades” to fix known design problems on these boats. It’s unacceptable. And I’m not bashing them for the sake of bashing-I’m a Slayer owner myself. I wish it wasn’t the case, but it is. This is more than simple wear and tear issues. These are known design flaws that persist year after year.

I agree for the most part. The handle was terrible from the factory, but their design with the rudder through a "scupper hole" is the primary issue, no way to compensate for expansion of the plastic. My Pescador pilot had steering issues as well, I had to modify that handle to turn properly as well. I personally had no issue with the rudder itself, but after feeling the spring blade in action, its insanely good. I will be more than happy to let you try it as well. I have had thoughts of creating my own steering mod, which would self adjust with the kayak, but I'm not sure I am equipped to do such a thing, nor do I believe its worth investing in a fairly controlled market. Overall, I like the kayak better than the Pescador and I bought it over an old town, which I actually was going to get first. I know you don't stand in your kayak, but I could just about do a back flip in mine and not tip over.
