Should we all see ourselves as members of the human family and have done with tribal allegiance?
Nationalism, Globalism - or even Tribalism? Many take pride in their family, ancestors and social origins, and we think it wrong to forget our roots. But can we justify these tribal allegiances, or are they a source of conflict and division? Should we all see ourselves as members of the human family and have done with tribal allegiance? Or is where we come from essential not only to our culture, but to knowing who we really are?
David Miller is Professor of Political Theory at Oxford and supporter of liberal nationalism. Miller is the author of National Responsibility and Global Justice.
Homi Bhabha is Professor of the Humanities at Harvard and is a leading voice in postcolonial studies. He is the author of The Location of Culture and Nation and Narration.
Yassmin Abdel-Magied is an activist and writer. She founded Youth Without Borders at 16, which lead her to being named the Young Queenslander of the Year 2010.

We evolved as tribes, and it was a vital part of human survival, and that really isn’t going to change. It’s very primal. When Global elitists try to push tribes w very different ideologies to live together, especially in small physical areas like England, this is where you start to see lots of social unrest and violence, And lots of competition for the same finite resources. Nationalism is the symptom of feeling threatened and burdened by the increasing number of especially poor minorities being either allowed in or pushed in, And straining the social welfare budgets of the host nation. There is much less problem when the incoming tribes can support themselves and will assimilate with the host nation. When they remain apart, wave the flag of the country they left, yet expect to be propped up financially by the host, and refuse to follow the host laws, This is especially when things get divisive.

david is the only one worth listening to, but unfortunately (as often happens) gets sidelined by the louder panelists who have little interesting to say. as always: never trust fast talkers

They seem to ignore the real core issue. The real barrier to any hope of globalism. Values, nations matter less than value sets. different nations are HOW you have DIVERSITY in a world wide society. It's valuable to have that diversity to basically trial and error what does and doesn't work. This foolish vision of homogeneous diverse society is just an oxymoron. ...i thought i could but perhaps not skip the point im not talking skin colour race etc ...i did specify values.

I agree with you. It's to the economic values of the very rich and powerful to have global economy, and power. They have little loyalty to a set of values, except their bank accounts.
