Because combat situations are stressful, loud, and chaotic, where you can't hear a thing, not even your sarge. This method teaches you not to think but to react. Thinking slows you down, so you need to concentrate, keep cool, so you can mobilize and move to action. That is the whole point yet recruits complain about it making drill sargents not be on tough on you which is sad tbh. Yes you get to think in the Army is not like they full brain control you. In chaotic situations you need to move as quickly as possible with commands shouting everywhere and need to listen to the ones applied to you.

Well said. In 2002 I went to basic at Ft. Knox (19k), basic and ait in one go (15 weeks) and they broke us down til we reached the bottom then built us back up. As the weeks go by they let up a bit and treat you like a human being but still punish you like day 1. Our last week the DS's had a banquet and 1 of them returned to the barracks drunk to chat and congratulate everyone for completing basic/ait. Looking back it was quite fun, except the constant noise and lack of sleep. Im in my 30's now with kids and enjoy my sleep, silence, and alone time to relax whenever i can get it 😀
