National Educational Television (NET) Logo History

A collection of various opening and closing idents from the defunct National Educational Television Network, now better known as PBS. These have been collected from Archive.org and KZread. These span from 1959-1971. Also, some bonus clips at the end. Sadly, I forgot the opening to NET Festival, which I also have. And NET Playhouse. I'll add those in the next installment.

If you check out the color "gabel house" id's, the announcer who is referring to NET as "the public television network "is longtime ABC staff announcer Fred Foy. In 1967, the underwriters of NET were The Corporation of Public Broadcasting.

Don't get me wrong, I love watching old scary TV logos on KZread, and NET was no stranger to scary logos. I use a scale that goes from 0 to 100 for logo scariness. 0-4 = no scary factor, 5-9 = very minimal scary factor, 10-29 = low scary factor, 30-54 = medium scary factor, 55-84 = high scary factor, 85-100 = nightmare scary factor. This doesn't necessarily mean how scary the logo is to a well-adjusted adult, but imagine being 7 in a dark room, how scary would the logo be. Many NET logos get into the 50's and low 60's, and there are even some that go as high as 80's. The logos before 1:06 (the static NET logos) are generally in the 25-35 range due to the somewhat unsettling appearance. 1:06 - 2:03 (the NET "fire" logo) is in the 40-50 range, depending on narrator and audio quality. 2:03 - 4:18 (the NET "house" logos with the NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION lettering) range from 75 all the way up to high 80s depending on the announcer and film and audio quality. Just the graphics of the NET letters and the font spelling out NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION would make this one quite scary on their own. Then add that dreary sounding theme music, and you've got yourself a logo that can be mid-high 70s at best and among the scariest logos ever put on TV at worst. Color logos are slightly less scary, usually in the 75-82 range while B/W logos are from 80 to high 80s. 4:18 - 7:08 (the NET "house" logos) are a good 20 points less scary than their earlier counterparts, in the 50-60 range. 7:08 (the Scanimated logo) is about a 15. Not very scary, but very impressive for their time. February 8, 2020 7:21 pm

I remember the teacher bringing in the TV on its rolling platform and the class would get so excited. We'd see a poetry show or a Spanish show or some kind of cultural show designed for 3rd or 4th graders. I wonder why none of those shows are available on KZread. I certainly have tried to find them. Maybe you know where they can be found. One I recall was Bill Smith "The Wordsmith" and Dr Lawrence Swan, who would show a preserved human brain at the end of his show. Plus the German language lesson "Guten Tag" for high school kids.

Having "Educational" in your name denotes connotations of being strictly for child development. Saying "Public" reaches a broader audience which IMO was the focus CPB had going into the 70s and beyond.
