There have been "pure country" legends like Don Williams who never compromised on the "country". But Don Edwards is a league apart. I haven't yet come across a singer quite like him. His voice will live on forever.

My dad too. He would sing me and my sister to sleep with it, and other cowboy songs. I can still remember the feelings I had listening to it.

Don is the real deal. Met him at Cowboy poetry waaaaaaay back in 1990,when it was a, small and more real and true gathering. A true gentleman.

I love this whole cowboy culture. it seemed to be a simpler time, when everyone had values and the like. I think we all need to taste those simpler times, and we would look at life alot differently.!!

So great - this is the best professional version I've seen/heard, and the story before it makes it even better. Thanks for posting this; from Weed, NM.

This was the very first `western` song I heard some 20 years age, sung by a Mr. Red Steagall somewhere in Kent, UK. been hooked on it ever since, even though I live in England my love of the West remains in my memories. Thnak y`all kindly.

@battycrease1992 Ma'am what you hear from Mr Edwards is one of the truest depictions of an era not that far removed from the present in the Oklahoma and Texas Territories. Oklahoma recently celebrated its 100th birthday. I consider myself fortunate for having been born into that culture. I urge you to read about that time and place. A good start would be to Google "Shootout at Ingalls, Oklahoma." I hope you enjoy all the history and "may the good Lord take a like'n to ya."

Sun Set That sun still sets in the west But that old trail is asphalt now Baked by the sun hot and dry The sounds of hoofs have passed Herds of buffalo graze no more Barbwire strung along The fence post passed like a picket fence As the truck tires whine on The sweetgrass has all but gone The mesquite is tall and thick Prickly Pear covers the prairie The Longhorns have gone A saddle all covered in dust The moth-riddled blanket flaps Riding quirt amiss Old spurs hung on a wall On a post hangs a leather belt With a holster cracked and rotting That old hogleg turned brown Brass all green The lassoing cowboy is no more That broad hat tipped back His shirt sleeves rolled high Jeans rolled double His hair thinned and gray High cheekbones darken Bull hide tough Hand scars a many With eyes squinting A straw chair leaned back Daydreaming No more round ups That last ride was long ago With a rolled cigarette on his lip His words in a low key That sun still sets in the west Barry 4/3/2023
