As a Catholic, I really love this anthem! I especially love the line "Tu Christi es caritas." I hold to that line deeply as a message that in each of us and in our hearts is inscribed the love of Christ. At a moment's notice, we are called to follow in Christ's example to not only wish the highest and best good for all our fellow brothers and sisters but to sacrifice all we can for them. I love that line and I love God most of all!!!

In the 1940's we sang the archbishop anthem Ecce Sacerdos Magnus to this same Gounod melody. It fits incredibly well Even the "Ideo jure jurando fecit illum Dóminus crescere in plebem suam" fits the music. Anyone else remember this?

It was written for Pius IX, at the time he convened the First Vatican Council. The Council confirmed the dogma of Papal Infallibility. Pius XII should have changed the lyrics when adopting it as the papal hymn.
