LYRICS
I was born before the storm
My mother placed a dozen thorns
The “sorry”s and the "take it back”s
lay silent in her folded hands
And head to headstone I just danced
oblivious to consequence
As a mourning sank into the ground
the highest branch I sought it out oh
I didn’t mean to let it go
I didn’t mean to bruise but I lost control
And what she said to me it still echoes
All your love may fade away
All you’ll become may all go to waste
so I can’t stand to hear you say it hurts
when it only gets much worse
Oh you caught me come to life
the moment when your eyes met mine
and from your bed the sun came in
and till this day it never set
But years of this and used to it
I stepped out for some cigarettes
The neon lights they called me in
Her eyes like yours just different enough
I didn’t mean to let you go
I didn’t mean to bruise but I lost control
What didn’t mean a thing destroyed us both
darling
All your love may fade away
All you’ll become may all go to waste
so I can’t stand to hear you say it hurts
when it only gets much worse
I couldn’t quite believe
the way it used to pull me down
and take its toll
I survived the laws of gravity
these jaws of brevity
I will not let them sink their teeth into my soul
All my love may fade away
All I’ll become may all go to waste
so I can’t stand here and say it hurts
when it only gets much worse
All our love may fade away
All we'll become may all go to waste
so I can’t stand to hear you say it hurts
when it only gets much worse

"It Only Gets Much Worse" was another song written in the shower. I've always been a fan of referencing past song titles in current ones (i.e. Why Am I The One) and I found IOGMW particularly amusing. I first started the demo as a fun song and went into the studio w Andrew to lay down some piano and vocals. He wrote some phenomenal Nilssonesque bridge chords that I wrote the bridge melody to. At the time, I never really wrote any lyrics other than the chorus- I just had a melodic mumbling in place on the demo, and as we started building it in the Grand Ro sessions, I realized that I really wanted someone else's help and opinion in finishing up the words. In the meantime Roger Manning Jr. did a phenomenal job on the strings. The song was completely done but I still hadn't written lyrics. I wanted this one to be particularly good. My friend Sloane Crosley was in LA the same time I was there recording- and we met up for a drink one night. She was leaving the next day, but I begged her to stay an extra night and finish the lyrics with me. I've never written lyrics with anyone other than P!nk on JGMAR, and that was "her" song- so I was a little more willing to take a back seat. I think there was a part of me that felt really challenged by Sloane being a published author that compelled me to really work hard on finishing it with her. We had a wonderful and strenuous time. But in the end they're some of my favorite lyrics I've ever written. Fortunately there was a beautiful song to sing them to once they were done.

Nate Ruess One of my favourites (though it is hard to pick!) on Grand Ro. You really did make a great cohesive album - as one song fades I can hear the notes of the next one starting in my head.
