I met her the year before this, when I was only eight years old. She was wonderful, charming and incredibly sharp. It was at a breakfast event and she had me at her table. We shared some strawberries and handled my Gilligan's Island questions with such patience. I asked for her autograph on a note card; she wrote a lengthy inscription and she had the most beautiful handwriting.

I was very pleased to learn that Natalie was able to give suggestions to Sherwood Schwartz about how Mrs. Howell should act and dress. Not every actor is allowed to do that. I also remember hearing that Natalie and Dawn Wells (Mary Ann Summers) were very close in real life. Dawn was like the daughter Natalie never had.

What a great interview, for two reasons - that interviewer certainly has to be Martin Short's inspiration for Jiminy Glick, the they're identical. hilarious to watch, I had no idea. And Natalie Shafer is such an elegant, classic Hollywood character. I could listen to her for hours and never get bored. What a delight. So glad KZread gave me this suggestion, for some bizarre reason.

the interviewer is Skip E. Lowe who was a Los Angeles Cable tv interviewer who tried to specialize in interviewing old Hollywood. Lowe promoted himself as "the boy with Betty Grable legs." Yes, he was insufferable. But he enjoyed his moment while the rest of us had to put up with him. He did interview great people, like Natalie Schafer. I saw him once slinking down the street. Yet, for some reason, people liked him. Obviously, he had something about him which is not readily apparent on camera. I think he imagined himself as an alternative to Merv Griffin.

Yes, he was a character, but he interviewed mostly people who would never have been on TV otherwise. Nobody got paid (including Skip E). They all did his show because they wanted to do. It was public access, and Skip E had to pay the cost of production, so he lost money.

While I didn't mind the interviewer moving things along without break, or dead silence, some interruptions were not very gracious when Natalie was not finished with her answer to his first question. The astrologer included in this interview was an interruption without cause. What did he have to do with Schafer's life story? It was as if some Nobel prize winner was interviewed about molecular biology and then cut to a radio traffic report. Poor organization and interview technique for sure. What I learned from Natalie was splendid and learned a lot about her career.
