Playing a sexualised character or having a nude scene in a film shouldn't give anyone the right to feel entitled to Portman sexually. If people feel entitled to treat actors based on their film roles then why has no one come after Edward Norton for being a neo-Nazi since he played one in American History X? There's a difference between actors and their fictional film characters. If you're going to conflate the two, be goddam consistent.

I just wanted to say "Thank You" Mrs Portman, I'm a french woman and I totally get what you're explaining. I'm not famous myself :-) not now and not when I was 12 years old, but I remember my teen years and the moment I understood that I had to protect my body. Today I'm 39 and I don't know how to say that in English : ce besoin de se protéger ne nous quitte vraiment jamais. Again, than you

@@someothername7886 I agree! I must add that Natalie said that she regrets signing the petition that was defending Polanski. She apologized. Natalie's direct words were: “I very much regret it,” she said. “I take responsibility for not thinking about it enough. Someone I respected gave it to me, and said, ‘I signed this. Will you too?’ And I was like, sure. It was a mistake. The thing I feel like I gained from it is empathy towards people who have made mistakes. We lived in a different world, and that doesn’t excuse anything. But you can have your eyes opened and completely change the way you want to live. My eyes were not open.”

The sexualising of her at 13, her being styled as a grown up from ages 12+, the countdown until her 18th birthday, magazines saying how she's becoming womanly... It's sick and it happens to so many young girls in Hollywood. And it happens to young boys too. That's why I use the cast of Stranger Things. What happened to Finn Wolfhard was also the same.

there are women who rape little boys too, (of course that is impossible, women are always victims). more female rapists should be brought up and focused on, it is almost exotic with a female rapist, because they are so rarely brought up, but they exist. i want to know what feminists think of female rapists, are they defending their rights too, it's interesting to know. it can be your sister, mom or aunt. women can do terrible things, don't forget that.

The Professional is one of my favorite movies. I always looked at it as two friends teaching the ways of how they live and truly growing up for the first time. Both with a connection between them that they didn't want to share, yet would be there for one another no matter what. Maybe it was my age at the time' I saw the film (12), that made me feel that way. Never did I see a girl sexually, but one becoming a teen/adult. To know now how men saw her sickens me. Knowing we live in a world like this. I have always beloved both a man and a woman should be looked at evenly. Probably because both my parents worked and raised me this way. I hope we can live in a world where there is no need for a woman's march or equal rights debates. For, if we are all truly equal, there would never be a need for these things.

I've always deeply admired Ms Portman from her incredible ground breaking performance in The Professional through her entire acting and political career. I saw and related to her role as a child of severe abuse and trauma searching for resolution and family, anywhere. Often in the most unlikely places like an illiterate exploited hitman whose best friend is a plant. Leon was also a deeply abused person, exploited by Danny Aelo's character Tony. And for me as a male abuse and rape survivor it touches me that Ms. Portman uses gender inclusivity in calling for a Revolution of Desire for all. I was sexualized by my mother as early as 11, ( she took me to see "The Graduate" I was 11, and later Midnight Cowboy, ) which among other things severely distorted my developing sexual self and set me up to be raped at 14 & 17. I never fully recovered from these breaks to my soul. We learn, we become aware, we hurt, we grieve and we do our best to live in the present. It is tragic what she and other women have endured in the public eye and yet she has confronted it and been empowered by it and is standing up and saying her truth. Thank you Ms. Portman for standing up for us all.

I am so sick of celebrities. I am tired of every generation having our real issues circumvented and taken over for a media circus. I like Natalie Portman and her experience is just as valid as anyone, but what the hell does she mean make a revolution of desire? That sounds like some garbage a bad writer threw in her speech. How about giving women direct information for what to do if they are a victim and organizing support for survivors? What about giving women advice on self defense and self awareness and of self empowerment? Why not give women a platform to speak their own truths? If you want people to change their behavior you first have to change your own. A man cannot act like a predator and expect the woman to comply and the woman cannot behave to attract negative attention and expect not to attract negative attention. She can expect justice however if she's victimized and that is another issue we aren't hearing celebrities address is how to change the laws so that victims and survivors can get justice. Statute of limitation laws where evidence exists should be eliminated. A national hotline for victims should be established. Special victims units in police departments and funding for rape kits. It's all nice to say times up but then what is moving forward? What is it you want moving forward? This is why I get tired of celebrities and media campaigns that take over issues people bring up. The country wants to look like they're having some movement but i see no movement. I see a carefully orchestrated media campaign and I see absolutely no movement on any legislation that brings about change.

Study after study has shown that women are interrupted more than men; that men speak significantly more in meetings than women do (one study found they account for 75% of conversation); that even when women speak less they are perceived to have spoken more; and that male execs who talk more than their peers are viewed to be more competent, while female execs are viewed as less competent. And here is a woman sharing her experience with movie reviewers writing about "budding breasts", sexualizing her body at 13 years old, yet none of these comment threads mention that. The issue is that a lot of the time when women speak out, they are not taken seriously as compared with men. When you're not being taken seriously, you don't have a real voice.

Of course women deserve to be treated as well as men, and should be able express themselves as they wish, without fear of assault and abuse. But make no mistake, our managers, overlords, and society in general treats us men like shit a lot of the time, too. And let’s not forget that many many men treat women way better than they do their fellow “bros” because believe it or not, most reasonable, healthy men actually like and respect women. But I’m happy for those men who should be punished to reap the whirlwind of their inappropriate and/or criminal behaviour.

But when she became an adult she wanted to regain control of her body and her profession, it was her right as actress, and JUST ONCE she posed naked in a movie and immediately afterwards she said she regretted it and she was ashamed of it because other disgusting comments like these... she must have control over her body and her choices, not the others who have vilified her. I was thinking it may point at a backlash because people are noticing there is a growing resistance to the way things were. And they resent that. I can understand that, it's like Weinstein's defense: it used to be a lot different. Yes, but that doesn't mean it was _okay_ . It was just more convenient for people like him. Now that type of behaviour is less and less tolerated. And adapting to that isn't always easy or.. desirable for some people. A lot of people have also become quite capable of dismissing people's words for many different reasons. Just so they don't have to listen, I suppose. Call it PC. SJW. Left. Hollywood. Privileged. Not that there aren't people on all sides who do that, of course, but that should never be an excuse.

But if you were talking about the West, none of what you said has any reflection on the real world. Surely, there are sexist men and opressive men out there, but that can be said about both sexes. Your comment suggests there is some kind of worldwide tradition of men treating women poorly and unfairly. If you want to see a place where women being treated horribly is an establishment, visit a Middle Eastern country.

I thought I lived in a world where everybody knew and accepted that the women did things like dress sexy or act sexy if they were open to seeking a partner on at least some kind of level don't matter how slow it develops into something. And a world where men knew they had to be the more active seekers to the opposite sex or their efforts would not be very successful in the long run. Am I 100% correct on this all or not? After reading through the comments below, let me just say that these brave women are speaking out with hopes that men in general will have a much more "heightened sense" of awareness of how critical women's rights, safety, and health are, not only to the specific strength of our nation, but also to the future of humanity in general. #ourviz #colourvizion

It wasn't a movie about a girl who befriends a hitman to avenge her family. It's about a 12 year old girl who falls in love with a mentally incapable man who feels responsible for her life after saving her, who happens to kill the people who killed her family. Her guardians should never have let her do the movie, and a movie with a 12 year old girl flirting with a grown man should never have been made in the first place. It's not her fault, but she can't blame the arsonist when he is given a lighter and a jerrycan full of fuel. The world is full of sick people, we don't lock our doors at nigh to keep the nice people out, we do it to keep the minority that might want to steal our belongings or do us harm.

I fully agree. I'm not even sure what they're fighting for. I'm a woman I don't feel oppressed. I have enough self respect and respect for my husband to I cover up the goods. Even so perves will be perves... I'm not so detached from reality to realize when I'm fueling the fire.

She said her guardians were there throughout the whole movie. She is lucky she has loving parents, or she would be on the list of bad kids of Hollywood who did drugs, or OD'd.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that most white voters voted for Trump. Most white women voters voted for Trump too.
