Little known fact, Nat was a highly regarded jazz pianist before he ever became famous as a vocalist!

Yeah he was one of the greatest and most influential Jazz pianists of the 20th century. Then to have that magical velvet voice to add to his musical genius is just overwhelming.

The combination of melodic inventiveness, rhythmic drive, and sheer coolness in this clip is overwhelming. Nat Cole was an absolute genius.

My recently deceased grandfather saw him in person. He said his voice was as smooth as velvet and he was the nicest chain smoke he ever met :)

I think of Nat King Cole as an amazing voice, but his artistry at the piano is something else as well! Wow...♥

Wow...I love this. I wish I had the chance to see Mr. Cole in person. He also played the first "Jazz At The Philharmonic" concert in Los Angeles (July 2, 1944) with an all-star band and takes a KILLER solo on Tea For Two. That recording is pretty available and I think a must for all Nat Cole piano fans.

Few realize that Oscar Peterson patterned himself after Nat Cole and when he formed his trio it was just like Nat with a Bass and Guitar. No drums. However, later on Oscar did add Ed Thigpen on drums.

@jayjacksonjazz Recovering from knee surg so I'm stuck home. You Tube's keeping me company. Just left a snarky critique at a Bobby Short video. Cole shows here that he set a standard way to high for the likes of BS and so many others. Nat was one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time and his singing was pure heaven.Your order of pianistic greatness is quite good. Nat King Cole had it all, except long life. RIP Mr.Cole. Nice comment jay!

Nat is indeed one of the great ones, but regrettably I find I must correct you. The True Piano Order: Tatum, Monk, Cole, Jamal, Powell, Byard, Mary Lou Williams, Jelly Roll, Evans, Hines, Tyner, McKenna, Peterson, Teddy, Garland, Flanagan, Roberts, Jarrett, Silver, Hancock, Corea, Kelly, Haig, McPartland, Billy Taylor - all members of the Sacred Order of the Piano (although not necessarily in that order, and I may have left some out..)
