NASCAR Is More POPULAR Than We Realize?!

Спорт

NASCAR’s popularity is something that can be a touchy conversation depending on who you talk to. Recently though there has been a new poll from the Morning Consult that stated the statistics of NASCAR being a highly ranked sport in terms of popularity with Gen-Z. So today we will look at why this is even though it doesn’t seem as such, we look at why NASCAR is more popular than we realize?!

I told Eric from “Out of the Groove” this. NASCAR isn’t hitting the TV ratings with Gen Z because Gen Z doesnt watch cable TV. Or if they do they are using their parents cable TV. Most of Gen Z is on KZread, twitch, other streaming sites. Your average Gen Zer has more likely spent more time on their least popular social media than they have watched Cable TV their whole lives

The initial success of the Chicago Street Race, Garage 56, Iracing, and the calendar changes have attracted more younger people into the sport than we thought The poll also noted more of these Gen Zer going to sporting events, which can correlate to the great crowds at many NASCAR tracks we've seen over the past few years

Yeah, as a Milennial born in 1991, games like NASCAR 2000, NASCAR Racing 1999 Edition, NASCAR Racing 4, Heat, Dirt to Daytona, etc, brought me into it, and today as I watch it on TV and in person, I drive on iRacing, NR2003, ARCA Sim Racing X, and rFactor 1 and 2. Even the NASCAR Heat 2000 game from the PC still has newer mods for it. Sim racing these days is in a robust, yet messy state, and each title has their defining strengths and weaknesses.

I'm in gen z and I had a stretch of time when I was really young where I loved the idea of NASCAR purely because of the movie cars, but I never really watched any races. Then I went through a long period of time where I essentially forgot NASCAR existed, and any time I did think about the sport, I thought it had to be boring because they just drive in a circle for hours. Then one night I was watching youtube and happened to watch EmpLemon's Dale Earnhardt video, and I thought it was so interesting that I watched his other NASCAR videos, and I realized just how interesting of a sport NASCAR actually is when you know a little bit about it. It was after that that I tuned into the next live race I could, and it happened to be the Chicago street race. Since then, I've only fallen for the sport more and more.

Check out the Repco Supercars Championship that Shane van Gisbergen is coming to NASCAR from when you get a chance. I became a NASCAR fan in 2020 after I got depression from my first college semester. I slowly became a fan after following the sport starting from your content AND Kyle Busch's win at Fall Texas to Larson's breakout season. I see NASCAR's growth almost being similar to some TV shows and movies nowadays. Some kids shows run on toy sales in Japan, and I can see the experimenting and growth payout happen the most in Toei's Kamen Rider and Super Sentai tokusatsu (live action special effects) TV shows because those series had to drastically change to gain newer fans. That's similar to what NASCAR is going through at the moment. It has to evolve and grow to meet and reach newer marketplaces.

I’m an older fan from way back. I’ve been hooked since the Cale vs. Donnie & Bobby Allison Fight at Daytona in 1979. I’ve seen so many ebbs and flows in the popularity of this sport, from the bright neon “Days of Thunder” to the recent “Watermelon Mania.” This sport has to be seen LIVE at least once to be believed. If NASCAR would get back to their roots, get folks hooked on seeing at least one race in person in their local area, making tickets affordable again to get the fan hype and fan involvement up again, I’m absolutely sure they’d eventually see another spike in popularity that’d rival MLB’s or College Football… Word of mouth works wonders. And if you had a GREAT EXPERIENCE at a NASCAR race, you’re going to tell everyone you know…

I was born at the beginning of the new century, and I started watching in 2006. I stopped watching for a brief period from 2017-2020 because all my favorite drivers like Stewart and Gordon had retired, and I didn’t watch again until the pandemic hit. What brought me back to a sport that I’d lost interest in because all my favorites were gone was largely people like Jaret, Eric Estepp, Darian Gilliam and Michael Mrucz presenting the sport through their eyes to the audience of the internet, and giving us honest takes of the current product presented to us every week. Based on my own experiences, I think that what we see through social media and internet platforms like KZread are going to be what connects the younger audience to the future of nascar, whether it be through content creators giving their take, or drivers interacting with fans, and that’s largely why the poll we saw there does matter, because it shows that what we’re doing now is a good start to connecting to my generation to keep us going as a sport.

Hopefully NASCAR also lets other franchises like Forza, Gran Turismo, Automobilista, GRID, etc. include official NASCAR vehicles, drivers, and branding so that other automotive and motorsports fans can get exposed to them. Furthermore, allowing other developers to implement NASCAR content opens the sport up to people in a way an official, dedicated game wouldn't- only a general racing game like Forza or GT would let you drive NASCAR race cars on tracks not on a real life schedule. Being able to drive a Cup car on a track like Spa, Suzuka, or Le Mans goes a long way to getting people into the sport.

The brand identity with the drivers to me is the most important thing when it comes to retention of fans long term. Like imagine if your favorite sports team changed its name and uniform as constantly as most teams change sponsors throughout the year. It’d be pretty hard for a new fan to find a team to identify with when they’re constantly unrecognizable from one week to the next. Also I feel the type of sponsor does factor in as well but that’s not gonna change until nascar gives those “fun” sponsors a reason to come back. No matter what, a Pepsi car will always be cooler than a bet MGM car for example

I’ll say this, I love NASCAR and I’m 21 so on the younger side of fanbase but for the first time in a LONG time it seems the sport has been growing rather than regressing. You had new types of racing with Bristol Dirt and Chicago street. More international presents as well as Key players from drivers like SVG, Raikkonen, Kobayashi and button even bringing in Travis Pastrana for the biggest race of the year. Ross Chastain becoming a star of the gen 7 era ( hail melon, Indy short cut, Noah fight and the incidents on track). More marketability even small wins like Toni Breidlinger bringing in Victoria secret into the sport for a one off race ( I can’t believe the amount of people who asked me about how Victoria Secret sponsored a female nascar driver in truck series for Toyota). Than you got working with IMSA/WEC to try and do the Garage 56 as the endurance category is gaining momentum and raising tide floats all boats.

im an older gen z and I started getting back into Nascar recently mostly because of all the new road courses. Watkins was the 1 race i never missed as a kid. but i think you are spot on with the brand identity it is so much harder to follow than almost any other racing series when it comes to learning drivers and teams. this also feeds into a second problem that keeps me from fully getting into American racing in general and thats how over commercialized and terrible the broadcasts are compared to European series.

I’m a SoCal guy, I just turned 29 two months ago. Been a fan since a baby according to my parents. I was watching and cheering two cars. Rainbow warrior Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Sr. Seeing the sports growth and change was crazy. When I was a kid I always dreamed of seeing NASCAR competing in LeMans… it happened. Always dreamed of the cup series racing in the streets (which btw the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series ran a city race in LA back then) It’s crazy how much it’s changed and I love the exposure they have been doing. I like how my buddy Ryan Vargas is turning heads and introducing the NASCAR Euro Series. 2005 I guess I would say was it’s max peak. It’s great to see some sort of incline. As a guy from SoCal, I’m seeing younger generations wearing nascar jackets as it’s “trendy” here. I would ask if they knew anything about the sport. Many have told me they just buy it for looks, then the young mind becomes curious, does research based of the gear they have or their friend’s and think it’s cool then decide to follow it. While many like me are long time fans and now have an excuse to wear them out in public more often rather than race day. I hope it continues to grow again. I think the racing has definitely been more exciting than back then.

Every weekend in the summer there was parties for every race and going to Pocono from 95 until about 2012 ish I saw the decline after over the years. I don't think it will ever reach that level but seeing this some what resurgence is a nice site to see

Avid NASCAR fan since 1974. Yes, it's on the upswing the last few years and I'm glad to see that. After a dozen years of doom and gloom stories it's great to see bigger crowds and positive news. The at-track experience really needs to get better. You used to be able to have fun at the track all weekend. Concerts, souvenir trailers, driver/crew chief appearances, sponsor product give aways, etc. The Cup Series needs to be on track more. Practice and qualifying, then the XFinity or Truck race followed by Cup Happy Hour.

I've been a die-hard fan since i saw it on tv in 2006, and have been an avid fan ever since. Surprisingly I didnt go to any races until Sonoma 2013, but once I got a job, a car, and was old enough to drive friends, I've gone to a race every year from 2016 on, and even went to 6 races in 2023. Whats kept me hooked is the parity. In all the sports that are ahead of NASCAR in that poll, you can guess the winner before the event and be right about 75% of the time. In NASCAR, you'll be lucky if you're right more than 20% of the time. No sport has more parity than NASCAR. I keep telling friends and coworkers that, and if they just watch a race they'll be hooked, and that's exactly what happens when they listen. Just this last year I got like 7 coworkers to join me at the LA Coliseum and Fontana (rip). Then at the fall 2023 Las Vegas race, I even converted an avid F1 fan to NASCAR because he was just impressed that not only was there passing, but the leader never drove off by more than a few seconds, and even when it looked like it was said and done Bell drove down Larson and nearly stole the win. Most ovals give you the ability to see 60-90% of the track from anywhere in the stands, which is something few motorsports have. NASCAR has the product, but they just need the sponsors to use their drivers in their commercials and let the drivers have personality

I was a NASCAR fan as a kid in the mid- to late '90s, but got away from it in part because none of my car-guy friends were interested in it and in part because the CoT turned me off. I started getting back into it a few years ago, mostly because my uncle would invite whoever was around over to watch the race and have beers in his garage on Sunday afternoons, and the more I watched, the more interested I got. I'm starting to think I like NASCAR more than football. I've lived in Minnesota my entire life, so... you can guess how football season goes. One of the things that sets NASCAR apart is that all 36 (+/-) drivers are competing at once, and you have a lot of different reasons you can pick drivers to like, and cheer for as many as you like. This past season, my favorite driver (Bowman) was having a bad year, and another driver I'd hoped to break out (Burton) didn't, but there was still plenty to watch. Seeing the improvement at RFK and watching Buescher win three races in five weeks was great. Watching McDowell dominate at the Indy road course was great. No matter who's leading the pack, you can find something to be excited about. Watching a 3-0 game between the Vikings and Raiders? Good time to rake leaves. I think you're right about more-consistent sponsorship. My boss, who doesn't strike me as much of a NASCAR fan, lamented a while back about the iconic (to him) sponsors not being around anymore. STP and the 43 car are still inexorably linked in a lot of people's minds, and there are certainly others that are similarly recognized. You're also right that the drivers need to be more visible outside of the sport. Advertising, interviews, etc. Let drivers' personalities draw in more fans. They have a great opportunity with Blaney winning the championship. And with Carson Hocevar moving to the Cup series this year, having a charismatic, likable goofball like that is a boon to the sport if NASCAR promotes him.

The survey was taken by around 2000 Americans around the younger age group. Even so, it is telling where NASCAR stands as a sport. This lull period of watching on cable or streaming is for sure hurting viewership but i do think once it finally gets sorted out, and there's only 1 platform to watch, we'll see a boost. The other thing is besides a few tracks in the dumps, i'm noticing an attendance increase since the mid 2010's. Maybe im just seeing things, but it really looks like to me there are less empty seats week in and week out than there used to be besides the trucks and xfinity races. Maybe its post-covid related, or maybe the economy has been improving for those who are race fans. Either way, a lot of people do blow NASCARS lack of popularity way out of proportion. No, it's not going to be bigger than the NFL or MLB, but it still holds it's own just fine. Despite what they want you to think, NASCAR makes their money

In my opinion, nascar needs to take 3 cars to Le Mans, 1 for each manufacturer, and put the 3 best drivers for that manufacturer into the car. So Chevy would be Larson, Byron and Busch. Ford would be Blaney, Logano and one of the RFK boys, and Toyota would be Hamlin, Bell, and either Truex or Reddick... What way to show off Nascar to these euros or anyone else then the 3 cars, with all 3 manufacturers, and the best drivers in the series instead of the retired drivers who dont race anymore.
