There's only one King and that is Richard Petty. I'll always say he is the greatest because he set the standard and the records that all NASCAR drivers set as their benchmark and he paved the way for those drivers.

The true epitome of the word "class"! There are not enough adjectives or adverbs to adequately describe Richard! A true southern gentleman and the best that has ever been in NASCAR! I always was and will always be a huge fan of his! Long live "the king"!

“KING RICHARD “ says it all! 7 time Cup Champion, 7time Daytona 500 winner, 200 cup wins! Richard, Dale Inman, Maurice Petty practically unbeatable team. Watched his whole career still root for the 43 car although results are not what I would like it’s still King Richard # 43 in petty blue.

Last NASCAR race I ever attended , The Firecracker 400 , 4th of July in Daytona Beach , Florida ,I was just a kid and went on Vacation with my Aunt , Uncle and Cousin. President Ronald Reagen was there and got to shake Richard Petty's hand and Ronald Reagens as well and got a poster with Pettys signature on it , it was his 200th Win and final win ever in his racing career. July 4th , 1984, I was only 13 years old .

Growing up in the West, I know almost nothing about NASCAR, it was still a Southeastern US deal. ABC Wild World of Sports probably introduced most of us into car racing and so many other sports. It’s funny that pro wresting and boxing were huge TV sports and their gone now, while college and pro football and NASCAR own the TV sports. The first racer I became aware of was Richard Petty and that color blue. He has represented the sport with class. It’s truly amazing that with the poor safety equipment they had for most of the King’s racing years the guys were able to retire on their own without the horrible damage to their brains and bones. When I see Kyle as he introduced his dad, I see a guy who like myself has had too much pain emotional and physical going on throughout his life and it’s taken a toll. The was something odd going on during the ceremony. As the camera scanned the crowd there were no smiles, no laughs, people were cold serious. It reminded me of a guy who gave a speech in church once. This kid was born with an arm’s length list of birth defects. He was late in learning to do everything and before that day he had never spoken to a crowd of fellow church members. The audience in the pews were holding their breath hoping the kids could make it through his remarks. They were even more tense than the speaker. When he finished without stuttering or forgetting, to just be caught standing in front of the crowd not having any idea what he was supposed to do, an audible relief came over everyone. I don’t know why, maybe a legend passed away or the year past had taken the lives of too many racers. Have any of you see, such a crowd before? Even Richard’s wife looked as if she didn’t wish to be there. I like the racers or drivers for their extraordinary skills , but mostly, they are genuine not a Hollywood creation, but real people.
