I've seen several on Al's dyno at New Generation Engines in St Catherines. It's a "spec" engine that is mandated. Not to be confused with the "Cup, Xfinity and the Truck engines". They use fuel injection and several other proprietary internal components. The spec engine is de-tuned for the NASCAR Pinty's series and NASCAR LMSC series in the USA. Here's the specs for those that are dying to know. cheers🇨🇦 Thank you Nick. The foundation of the NASCAR-Approved Spec Engine is a production GM LS2 block (6.0L / 4.000) with LS2 CNC ported heads. Fully assembled the 364 cubic inch engine weighs around 415 pounds and produces approximately 610hp and 500 ft-lbs of torque, with a Holley 750 cfm carburetor. The 390cfm Carburetor generates approximately 539 hp and 500ft-lbs of torque. All measured at 7000rpm. It’s components come from many of the best aftermarket companies including: - Edelbrock manifold and fuel pump - JE Pistons - Lunati crank (3.622 stroke) and rods - Comp Cams camshaft - Holley carburetor - Quartermaster clutch, starter and bellhousing - MSD distributors - Clevite bearings - Cometic gaskets - Kooks headers etc… The Spec Engine is not a “sealed” engine and NASCAR rules do allow teams to assemble, disassemble and rebuild the Spec Engine but no modifications to the components are allowed other than what is stated in the current rule books.

Back in 1985-1995 when NASCAR came to Sears Point Raceway (northern california ) I was racing Enduro Karts- lay down go karts. My class was 135cc. The kart had direct drive to rear axle clutch set to slip @ 10,000 rpm's. Top rpm's on different tracks was 14,000- 16,000 rpm's. My average speed around was 99mph, and this was 15 seconds per lap faster than NASCAR. Small size and low CG- 1" off ground makes this sport fun to run. Top speed was 130-150 mph and NO roll bars or seat belts. I raced this car around so much, she had over 10,000 miles on her, and I still have her to race again. I was the points champion for years, you had one hell of a time to beat me boys. The club was NCK, Northern California Karting.

They are governed to 15,000 since 2014, but rarely turn more than 12,000, due to mandated fuel flow restrictions. Energy recovery systems such as KERS had a boost of 160 hp (120 kW) and 2 megajoules per lap. KERS was renamed Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic (MGU-K). Heat energy recovery systems were also allowed, under the name Motor Generator Unit-Heat (MGU-H). The 2015 season was an improvement on 2014, adding about 30-50 hp (20-40 kW) to most engines, the Mercedes engine being the most powerful with 870 hp (649 kW). In 2019, Renault's engine was claimed to have hit 1,000 hp in qualifying trim. Of the previous manufacturers, only Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault produced engines to the new formula in 2014, whereas Cosworth stopped supplying engines. Honda returned in 2015 with their own engine, while McLaren used Honda power changing from Mercedes power in 2014. In 2019, Red Bull switched from using a Renault engine to Honda power. Honda supplies both Red Bull and AlphaTauri. Honda are due to withdraw as a power unit supplier at the end of 2021, with Red Bull taking over the project onwards and producing the engine in house.

6600 huh? Those engines wind a lot tighter than that. All you have to do is watch the in car telemetry and you will see 2000+ more RPM than that. What is absolutely amazing is the amount of power those engines can make with that size carb. I guess with super great flowing intake and heads plus ludicrous revs you can accomplish miracles.

Hey Nick!...The LS2-based 364ci V8 is allowed as an alternative to purpose-built or “open” race engines for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and Canadian Tire Series The spec engine is not a fully assembled, sealed crate motor - a practice that is promoted in other grassroots racing divisions. Under this program, approved parts are encrypted and sold through Robert Yates Racing Engines. Customers can have the engine parts assembled and dyno tested by RYRE or an engine builder of their choice. However, none of the components can be modified before assembly. For 2013, prices for the kit vary between the different series, ranging from $21,000 up to $24,500. Assembly and dyno time at RYR adds another $4,000....The engine package starts with a factory GM LS2 block (4-inch bore). Internals include a 3.622-inch stroke Lunati crankshaft, Lunati rods, JE pistons (10.5:1 compression ratio), Cometic gaskets and Clevite bearings. The bottom side finishes up with a Champ oil pan, Stock Car Products oil pump, ATI damper and QuarterMaster flywheel and starter....In K&N Pro Series trim, the engine is rated at 610 horsepower with 500 lb-ft peak torque. The Canadian Tire series requires a smaller carb and tapered spacer, so horsepower is choked back to 500hp...

The Michigan 500 was built on my uncle Les' property. They bought it from him in the late 60s and the house my dad grew up in is still there by the track. As per the agreement our family was supposed to have free passes for any race for life to direct family members to my uncle, but they sold the track to someone else and somehow that ended the life time agreement. I guess lifetime means nothing. I haven't been there since I was little.

Check Burt Reynold story about his “lifetime agreement” with Pontiac for a new TransAm every year ! His movies took the same formula as “Bullet” and “Vanishing Point” and 007 movies to create the “Hero’s Car” brand-image that resulted in enormous sales. Such contracts intention is perpetually - but - the small print 10 pages long are used to get-around the big print. I don’t know if Dodge still offers a “Lifetime WARRANTY” but the small print had an “escape clause” that basically said, unless the value of the car is lower than cost of repair 🤨

The cars that run in the NASCAR Cup series use fuel injection, that engine is from one of NASCAR's other series. The Cup series engines probably produce 800 HP at races at tracks other than Daytona and Talladaga, at those races they use restrictor plates that may cut the power substantially.

My machine shop boss had the same oiling set up on the shop drag racing engine....dry sump, too. WE had Yates heads also - but on a Ford. Lots of NASCAR tech went into our shop 1/4 horse engines, actually..... (added - even my little 7500 rpm street 289 had a set of used Roush Racing NASCAR re-furbished solid roller lifters from Roush's "Used NASCAR Parts Program". 1/3 cost of buying them new. My Boss arranged the deal and when they came in with obvious hand ground mods for removing weight and splayed valve pushrod clearances, the boss said it was probably Jack's hands that did that....) BTW - back then the average in NASCAR was around 770 BHP - the late 90's.....

This engine is severely restricted by the 650 CFM Carburetor. It's to keep the cost down and the competition close. It likely makes around 650 HP but I'm only guessing. Robert Yates was one of the best engine builders ever but passed a couple of years ago, but his employees kept the shop going producing these Nascar engines. The famed Jack Roush and Doug Yates, Son of Robert Yates, builds engines for all the Ford Mustang teams in Nascar.

Nick I saw Richard Petty at a High School football game and spoke to him a few weeks ago. He’s in his early 80’s and still gets around good and goes to Watch his grandson play sports. I saw him at a High School football 🏈 state championship playoff game. He was Wearing his iconic cowboy hat 🤠, rattlesnake hat band and sunglasses 😎. Pettys Grandson is the Starting High School Quarterback. He was also the Team leader & had lead the team undefeated for the whole regular season. They had 8 wins & 0 losses and finished 1st place in their conference as Conference Champions. But in there non conference State championship playoffs game they was the Visiting Team at Saint Paul NC ..... First Quarter of the game Richards grandson got tackled and hurt & suffered fractured Ankle. This took him out the rest of the game watching from the sidelines on crutches and ankle wrapped up. Since he was their star Senior player and Team leader his injury kinda made the team lose their confidence & they never recovered that confidence. They was ahead 6-0 when he got injured but they just couldn’t get it together after that & they lost 35-9. But they still finished as conference champs undefeated 8-0 in their conference. But in this first state playoff single elimination game they finished 0-1, ending their 2020 playoff Season. Reason it was just ending their 2020 season now in 2021 is: Because of Covid all the Football games was postponed in the fall of 2020. So they played the 2020 season this spring 2021. They will start the 2021 season back on normal football schedule this fall. Pettys grandson graduates this Month. I haven’t heard if he’s going to college for academics, Sports or whether he’ll be following in his Great Grandfathers, Grandfathers, & His Uncle Kyles footsteps and go into Some sort of Racing. I don’t know I haven’t heard anyone say. But it’s really awesome to go to a High School football game and run into someone as iconic as The King Richard Petty of Nascar. Cool 😎
